If you feel like the world seems increasingly colorless, you are not just imagining it. Indeed, the world is running out of color. Take cars for example. Car color distribution is at an all-time low. The most popular car colors as of 2020 were greyscaled colors, with over 70% of cars produced globally being white, black, grey or silver. Black and white are almost 50% of the car color market share. Red, blue and brown cars are between 6% and 10% each, while all other millions of colors amounted to less than 5%.[vid/info] If you want more evidence, this is the parking lot of the 1970s and 1980s and this is the parking lots now. The car color distribution has significantly changed from vibrant to monochrome.
Interesting stuff I found for myself:

I think more people would buy cars with wacky colors if companies just offered them at the same price, but that's when greed and profits come in. I had to pay extra to get my red Mazda and people thought I was crazy because why would you pay more for your car? If they just sold the red car at no additional cost, everyone would get it.

@@shreyvaghela3963 but how did he measure popularity? Mostly through sales. You can't buy something that's too expensive or isn't sold. I'm not saying everyone would buy a colorful car but more people would if they didn't have to pay extra for it. One point I think he missed is the "premiumization" of brands and products. Colors like black, white and silver as usually associated with luxury. Most brands have tried to increase their brand value (and the price of their products) by trying to appear more upscale. McDonalds no longer has cartoons on the walls. Volkswagen is no longer an affordable brand, etc. Maybe he touches on this on the other video.

I have been living in recreated vintage interiors since '97. I do not understand how these 'neutral' or monocrome colors can be healthy, mentally or perhaps even otherwise. I need colors. Couldn't live without 'm. And it's obvious people are starting to react to this colorless world.

I think social media plays a major role here. In old times people bought things in the colors they like, but now we are also concerned about getting the likes from others. Since monochrome is liked by all, we choose it over colors.

8 years ago, I sat at a bus stop and would count all the white cars that would pass by, then another day the same with black, and silver/grey. Could not come up with a conclusion why such uniform colors. It seems no one wants to be unique, or different. I drive a nice color of red. I feel exceptional to be in this color.

Great video. I can still remember how my country looked like during communism - so grey. Colours were expensive and there wasn't such need to stand out. There was like "the butter". There was only one type in the whole country. When someone said, I bought butter, you could be certain what butter it was - it was the one and only. Everyone was absolutely thrilled when capitalism arrived, there were colours (and ads) everywhere. I came back around and find the monochrome soothing again 🙂 P.S.: I really hope that you were not done rendering this video at the time my Patreon payment came :-) I would have well undestrood the timeline and survived - but still, very nice of you indeed!

I feel like the fact that we have the sources of light that can change the look of the room by changing to any colour imaginable with a press of a button could be contributing to the trend in housing. The houses are mostly grey, white or dusty brown but not black because black doesn't reflect the colour. And also the fact that we switched from the old lightbulbs that paint everything in yellow so the colours had to be VERY pronounced might be involved

I was born in 2001, I grew up playing outside and played with colorful toys like Legos and nerf guns. I remember the quality of my box television wasn't too great but the colors were bursting out to my eyes. The world nowadays is such "low quality" despite being able to stream 8K 120 fps on a flat-screen to me. Seems a bit more boring when you live in the city but living somewhere Midwest or to the west of America there's more country land with is booming with colors from my experience. So it boils down to your own perspective really

0:15 If you look at the last few years you can see more white cars being sold and less black cars. I have a feeling this has to do with the absorption of light, which makes black cars absorb more sunlight, thus getting warmer. Last couple of years the summers have been getting increasingly warmer so black cars left in the sun will get extremely warm. Because of this more people are starting to buy white cars so they don't get as warm if left in the summer under the sun. If I remember correctly this is very common in Mediterranean countries.

Thanks for the video. This always bothered me. First noticed the lack of color in cars which, from the manufacturing standpoint, makes sense. Then I noticed McDonalds “growing up” with the whole “cafe” experience. It is depressing but everything you stated seems to be the case. I guess if we want color we’re going to have to turn to nature.

Desensitization. What’s interesting is I noticed this color thing myself as my husband and I wear tie dye/paisley tops, colorful shoes etc. One day in a restaurant it hit me that everyone sitting down was wearing grey, black, white and brown. My husband and I were the only two people that were wearing color. Also, we get people coming up to us saying how much they like what we are wearing which is cool. I guess we stick out! Our Honda is red. My VW bug was blue. (Everyone knew when I was at work bc my car was the only one in the parking lot that was blue!). I saw a similar short ‘Reel’ video to yours on FB so I decided to look here.

I know for myself, I'd be far more interested in something like keylime or lemon colored as opposed to the muted colors that are more common. I mean scared in the sense that the greyer the rest of the world is, the more difficult it becomes to be the one to have guts and go for bolder "colours". This accounts for everything: your clothes, car, interior, even your personality. If certain behaviour(and I count your choice of clothes, car, etc. under this) becomes the norm, deviating from that (having a more vibrant "colour") becomes increasingly difficult and scary to do, so must people will choose the safer option@@user-nd7rd8jo6h

According to Tash Bradley, a trained color psychologist, this gray-washing has an effect on emotional wellbeing. She said that gray doesn’t have any psychological benefits, and if anything, “it’s a negative.” While reds stimulate excitement and blues evoke calmness, gray is “soulless, drain[ing].”

I tried the whole neutral colour thing, but it depressed the hell outta me after a while. I kind of understand why people like everything being in neutral or monochrome colours, but it's not for me. i can tell you that in the viking age, colour was all the rage. switch to the 13th century, colour is still all the rage. 14th century is the same, the more colours, the better. our recent switch to monocrome, i would blame on advertising. advertisements are cheerful and colourful. however, advertisements has a negative connotation. as such, we prefer colours that do not remind us of advertisement.
