I would recommend Explosive Arrow Champ instead of this for your first time. The defensive layers on pathfinder are more difficult to get up and running.

@daleanddale As with everything, there's pros and cons. I couldn't get cozy with this because the damage is even more delayed than TR. It also requires you to have a very good loot filter, imo. I'd rather recommend something simple like Pohx's Juggernaut Righteous Fire (not inquisitor because that's a bit more complex to gear)

Crucible league was my first league ever. I started like a month and a half ago (D4 bad). I followed Ziz's play by play TR build. I had no idea what I was doing and I'm pretty sure I bricked the build somewhere along the line after the campaign. I still managed to complete my first atlas battlepass and go 10/40 for the t1 armor, without a 6-links. Thanks, Ziz!

I died so much, but I also learned alot and kept at it. I almost quit before I learned how to use trade, and got the last uniques I needed. I still have to learn how to craft lol. I can't wait for 3.22! Going RF jugg, although I'm thankful for the way the build carried me I'm supee sick of TR. Pohx will be my guide this time around

From a quick peek... 1. (edit: disregard #1 - was looking at a different gem), 2. removal of alt quals means we lose 20% reduced mana cost overall, which hurts the "0 mana cost" version of the build quite a bit and will need to be made up via other sources - or you could just keep playing the Eldritch Battery version of the build forever. My best guess is that the Wildwood Primalist ascendancy will offer a few different options for shuffling around some affixes on your flasks or gear to make up for this loss (e.g. by boosting your defenses so you can craft -mana cost instead of +life on your amulet, and/or by switching your anointment to Dreamer instead of Hardened Scars).

Just replying again to correct myself here... disregard #1, that was a change to a different gem. TR gets a +0.20s duration increase from the new quality (a.k.a. a buff, particularly to single target damage where you're stacking up a bunch of TR instances). This should help offset the loss of damage from no helm enchant.

Tempted to swap to impending doom poison eventually but am so good at leveling tr so I'm downnnn~less gear competition when we don't have busted crucible bows but I can definitely invest my way to maybe reds and definitely essences and content I enjoy where chaos is good. Can't wait to mess around with the new atlas and keep trying to enjoy a blasting map plan without burning out. I think I've given up killing my own maven and if I play enough I'm just going to 100% but a void stone carry on tft or w/e. Can't wait! Cyclone has been nerfed to the ground. Back in legion everyone was playing it, but it is no longer viable for a league starter. To make it playable you need almost Mirror worthy weapons. Trust me I've tried to make it work, but it's just not worth it. My best advice, if you enjoy that playstyle, is to play an easy league starter build on launch. Make a lot of currency but don't spend it. Save it up and look into COC(cast on crit) builds. These builds are a little expensive and confusing, but 100% worth it. They use cyclone as a generator that triggers huge spells like ice spear or forbidden rite spells for example. It's pretty much cyclone but so much more fun. Hope this helps a little.

I've been running this as my LS, this is my first League, and it's been great! One question though, what's with the 39% AOE target? I'm assuming it has to do with certain thresholds firing more arrows but spreading the pods out more? Something like that? Crucible was basically my first league ever after ritual a little bit. I made my own toxic rain scion (w/o guide) in ssf and she carried me through t16 and the first 2 voidstones. My second character was EA ballista (with guide) and I could get all 4 voidstones, cleared atlas 100% and killed a couple of Ubers too.

Not Ziz, but I played this build as a starter in Sanctum and tested both thoroughly, and spoke with Xai who helps make these builds. Caustic Arrow feels a bit better for fast mapping, but the damage difference is substantial enough that the moment you find a rare monster with one or more defensive mods, you have to put significantly more effort into killing them, often by putting your ballistas down, using your curse, blessing, etc. Not to mention that your single target dps takes such a huge hit that even map bosses take a lot longer to kill. You could fix this with a second bow and quiver set in the off-hand and swap between the two for mapping/single target, but that's a huge investment for little gain. Toxic Rain maps pretty fast by itself already.

Whats so important about crafting on white items? Is it cheaper? To cap your ress fast? I used to wear random rare pieces and slaping ress on them to cap during acts, am i not getting something here?

No you aren't missing something. The idea of crafting on white items compared to rare items is that you can literally just go to a vendor, pick up a white resistance ring and craft on it - it's just easy and efficient, during levelling there's not much else you're looking for other than res on affixes so it's the easiest way to get lots of res. If you manage to find a rare already with res + an open suffix, you can most definitely craft on that!

I don't know if it's just me or not, but I league started this and I'm following it to the letter. But the damage just isn't there, it's so slow to do anything and killing things beyond like T7 just becomes a total slogfest. I don't understand the hype at all, I really don't.

I feel the same way. I'm using a 6L and 39% AoE but higher tier yellow maps or red maps are a slog. I think the fact that it's such a clunky skill doesn't help. You need enemies to stand still in your pods, which is just damn annoying. I can see it perform well with more gear, but the early stages of my SSF journey have been a struggle. Maybe I'm spoiled with the builds I've played before, don't know.

worst league starter i've ever played. love ziz, but fuuuck. problem is all the damage comes from the bow and it costs a fortune. can't do any reasonable content until you get it. i'm trying to hang in there but i'm losing my mind. i'm 94 and i haven't had a raw div drop yet. my worst RNG in POE history on top of the worst league starter is making for a rough time.

I have up and rerolled spark anyway......on a super budget build it outperforms TR by a country mile

explosive arrow champion is the build for you. Not only do you drop the ballistas and they do all the work for you, you are a champion so you get things like armour % increase, evasion % increase, immune to stun, and fortify for free! You also get to learn( a little) how ignite works! It is by far the easiest league start I've ever had and I was doing all content pretty easily. Bossing was a breeze. Mapping was not super fast, but fast enough. I think this is exactly what you are looking for. Ziz actually has a guide on it he just made a couple days ago.

As far as I'm aware, you can go back and change anything with a character; except their ascendency. If you're happy with Pathfinder, then yeah.

wanted to go rain of arrows champion with precise technique at first and transitioning into full crit after reaching yellow maps and building up some 15-20 div then switching to tornado shot. would i limit myself by playing roa instead of toxic rain and playing champion instead of raider? I dont want to push uber content, red maps and normal bosses are fine for my playstyle and I thought champion is a tad more tanky even if a bit lower dmg potential than raider.

TR dmg is high attack speed and stack spore pods on your targets, focused Ballista lets you use your overall high attack speed also for your second dmg source: the totems (for bosses, Ess ~ BigBoys) will every time you attack, (not hit - thats what ziz means when talking about pre stacking pods) also attack ON your target. Switching this Gem and the Totems will attack random and slower, resulting in lesser and not well stacked spore pods. It will prob do some things but overall it a big dmg loss, for single target dmg and thats why we use this setup in the first place.

New player here. I have made it as far as T5 maps on my first character and I keep hearing the terms "mapping" and "bossing." What's the distinction? From context, i get that a "mapping" build is meant to be faster and a bossing build has more burst damage for taking down bosses as fast as possible, but what's the playstyle look like? Am I supposed to go through all the maps as fast as possible, and then go back through them again to kill bosses for atlas skill points? I just don't understand.

mapping is is referring to fast aoe farming, bossing refers to single target damage

Bossing isn't refering to the bosses at the end of the maps. Bossing is referring to the end game bosses aka Shaper, Elder, Sirus, Maven, all their Conquerors and guardians and so on. These are bosses you collect stuff from to summon. If your new and haven't fought them yet, it probably doesn't make sense. But generally Bossing refers to having nice single damage dps that are focused on farming these end game bosses, where mapping refers to clearing maps faster to gain more currency per hour. Just end game stuff that you haven't hit yet. It will all make sense to you soon :P

You can but it is better to use the bench craft that costs 5 Instilling orbs + 5 Glassblower's Bauble so that you can guarantee whichever enchant you want.

You do both. Selfcasting TR is quick and easily clears, then drop ballistas for single-target.

Hi im new to POE. i have a question. Why is there 2 toxic rains in seperate equiptment?

I believe it’s because one toxic rain is for you to manually cast, and the other one is supposed to come out of the ballista.

Manual cast and no ballista is for mapping, then for single target you put down the ballista and then use manual cast TR. I’m not 100% but I think this is why.
