I'm disabled low income and have an Apt with a patio. I grow lots of foods, tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, kale, potatoes. I tried cabbage but I guess they don't like containers. I also grow herbs. Where there is a will there is a way. I bought a small budget friendly dehydrator and so far I have 4 canning jars of kale. I also dehydrated carrots. I plan this coming weekend to go to a farmers market. I also budget 50.00 a month to do a pantry restock. So when I find food on sale I buy large amounts. I also pick up food grade buckets and than budget for gamma lids for them. For beans, rice, sugar flour. Anyone can start a food pantry...just with 5-10 dollars a month.

We didn’t get a garden in this year, and in northern New England we have unfortunately missed the bus, so to speak. It’s my fault. I need a hip replacement and it hurts to move, so I procrastinated too long. Next year I’m putting in our garden if I have to crawl, and it may come to that. Going to plant many containers on our deck as well. It’s going to be a bumpy ride for a while to come. I hope we are all prepping, praying and getting our literal and figurative houses in order. Thanks for the garden tour, and for being a calm voice of reason. So needed!

We bought 2 rain barrels last year a month before Hurricane Idalia came through our town. We have no gutters, but caught lots of rain water. Those 2 barrels were a blessing since we have well water. The power pole to our well was destroyed during the hurricane. The barrels provided for a month until we could get our power fixed. This year we added two more. Just yesterday Hurricane Debby came through. Thank goodness we have plenty of water, since the power is still out.

FREE tip for people with clay soil: put your amended soil in sacks made of crocheted recycled plastic shopping bags similar to the sleeping mats made to give away to the needy unhoused people. They're everywhere, they're free, and the drainage sacks sold for draining are usually made of plastic anyway. Very easy for potatoes because you can dump them out instead of dig them up.

You can use those coffee cans to help your tomato plants. Punch holes in the bottom of the can. “Plant” it next to a tomato plant and place the stake then too. Then always water by filling the can. Never top water the tomatoes. This forces the roots to grow downward so they survive drought better. I put a stick in each can so little critters who fall in during the night can get themselves out. Also, plant the tomatoes deep. If you get one in a little pot, don’t plant it at the original dirt line, plant it so the dirt is at the first set of leaves. If you buy plants in six packs, look for the one or two which accidentally have an extra plant in there.

If stuff keeps dying over by the fence, i would start putting my grass clippings, fall leaves, compost, anything natural there and just keep tilling it in to bring vitamins and minerals back to the soil. You can try manuer, but thats expensive, and youll want to know what the horses or cows have been eating, you dont want something gmo or nasty getting in your soil. You could also ask around at church if there are seasoned gardeners. Dont forget to learn how to save seeds! It may take several years to get that soil fixed.

We’ve had a summer and winter garden going here in Fresno, California for the last five years. Right now, in my kitchen, we have freshly picked tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, onions, cucumbers, juicy watermelon and purple seedless grapes: all from our own backyard. We have foreseen economic hard times coming for a while and it is now upon us. Collard greens grow year round here. We have also had some luck with sweet potatoes. We have canned tomatoes, marinara, salsa, jalapenos, sweet yellow peppers, and plum jam. We also are getting into dehydrating: jerky, carrots, collards, celery, peppermint, dill, parsley. Next year we expect to have our first year of peaches. We also have a Fuyu persimmon tree which is covered up with persimmons which will provide winter fruit. Thankfully, we have friends who barter with and get lots of lemons, oranges and even grapefruit.

Since there is so much concrete, perhaps the yard/dirt was used to dump oil, gas, other chemicals, etc. Maybe get a soil test kit and see if there are heavy metals or chemical residue in your yard.
@suecook8379

You can get a soil test through your university's agric dpt. If your schools won't do it, Penn State Univ will. It used to be $12 I think. For the compactness, get earthworms (lots) and place them in the soil. As they "move in", they'll loosen the dirt. I'd open the lids on the water barrels so the sun can work on the smell and any bacteria. Vinegar/baking soda to wash as well. I'd put some water in, let set after the cleaning for a week or so and taste it.

I once had a house where there was a place that absolutely nothing would grow. I had the soil tested and it turned out that a cement truck must have been washed out there when the neighborhood was developed and the chances of anything ever growing there was zero, not even if I ammended the soul. I used raised beds there instead. With that much concrete in your yard, it's probably suffering the same fate. Maybe you could use raised beds where the concrete is and plant your trees in the area where you have the yellow bike. You can keep them small enough by keeping them trimmed.

Regarding growing food indoors. Anyone, anyplace can grow sprouts. Many online garden/seed shops sell seeds for micro-dwarf tomatoes. They bear cherry tomatoes and the plants are no taller than 12 inches so they don't take up a lot of space and can be grown on a shelving unit with grow lights. Ditto for a cucumber called "Quick Snack". Things like lettuce and other leafy greens are easily grown indoors as well as all sorts of herbs.

If you don't have a back-up power source and the grid goes down, your frozen food will thaw and ruin. You might consider canning the meat in your freezer and dehydrating the vegetables. Just a thought.

My son-in-law grows hydroponically in an apartment. I am going to use my an areo garden in my apartment. I have a balcony now since I moved. We are only allowed 5 pots on the balcony floor. There is five holes on the railing for pots as well. I am allowed to plant a flower in a certain area outside so I will choose an edible flower like nasturtuims. I am going to ask if I can use those stackable pots in the five spots I am allowed on the balcony, that way I can grow more. I noticed on the river walk berries growing and asked a guy cutting ivy away from the trees for Park & Recreation if they spray the area and he said no. I asked him if I could pick some of the english ivy to make laundry soap and he said yes. Thanks for the tips Prepper Princess

I saw a gardening method online where you just layer hay over the area. Leave it 4 or 5 months to rot down. Then just plant in it. No digging required!

If you have a patio or balcony get a Green Stalk planter. I have three that I use for strawberries. I need one more for lettuces, greens, herbs, green onions. I grew asparagus plants from seeds and I'm about to transplant them into a bed. Stock up on seeds. Another cool thing is making sour dough bread starter & keep feeding it. You can get a ton of bread. I have two fermentation crocks for making sauer kraut and pickles. Learn to propagate edibles. Those banana trees put off babies that you can remove & put in their own pots. Good to share or barter. You can also propagate berries and figs quite easily. Im determined not to let "them" get the best of me.

The back fence may have had salt or oil put down to stop weeds. I wouldn't replant there. Other areas, I'd put in one raised bed. If it succeeds, put in more.

Your county agricultural extension office will do a soil test for you, but since you think you may have concrete under the dirt in your back. yard, maybe you could. try container gardening. There's a fellow from San Diego (Epic Gardening) who had his whole front yard in raised beds. He has since moved to a place where he has more room and he gives excellent advice. There's Leon from Oklahoma who gardens in barrels (trees too), using a wicking method that I also use - it saves lots of water. Gary Pilarchick at the Rusted Garden among others has excellent information. If a person wants to, they can. Lots of excuses, though.

I just thought to myself: Self, I wonder when PP will be putting up a new video and BAM, I got my notification for this vid!!! Thanks so much. Your advice over the years has been so helpful and has helped my husband and me to be able to remain calm in what we also believe will be the upcoming storm. We’ve been doing what we need to stay safe and ready. Wishing everyone all the best. Prep & Pray pray pray!🙏🏻

Dig holes for your banana trees and put a couple of mush bananas in and cover. That is perfect potassium they will need. My gardening game changed when I started using the leaves and fruit of plants to feed themselves. Ground over is also worth the investment if you hate weeds.

Buy plenty of seeds now and learn seed saving. If things get really bad you won’t need to rely on the supply chain. Plant plenty of potatoes, you can live off of those alone for a long time if required, ask the Irish! Plant beans and legumes. Invest in canning jars so you can process everything this way,. Buy rice and beans. If you live where you can raise rabbits, you can feed them off of your garden and they will supply you with meat cheaply!

Try to get XXL pots. I have bought a bunch of them from a landscaper who received olive trees in enormous semi terracotta (plastic) pots. First I grew early potatoes in them. Now they are filled with tomatoes and paprika. I use seed of food I bought, so its free. Lettuce, garlic, carrots, peas and french string beans are doing great!! The advantage of growing food in large pots is: no weeding, you can change their place if needed, lesser need for water. Certainly when you make tiny holes in a 2 liter soda bottle, dig it into pot, opening above soil, fill it with water, put the lid back on.
