Independent heavy equipment mechanic here. Just wanted to let you know that these extended runs on your excavator are very good for your machines. Gives the fancy new emissions system the time they needs to get hot and process the sludge coming through the exhaust manifold. I've noticed an alarming trend among some of my customers that are having expensive problems because their machines only get run intermittently. Gotta get them hot and run them! Love you guys

I agree. Diesel cars and trucks(outside the US small diesels are still plentiful(( I have a 2.8 IL4 diesel Toyota)) should only be bought by people who will run them for longer periods of time regularly . Frequent short trips dont suit modern diesels(or older diesels for that matter.)

I live on the Navajo Reservation and we have to drive 50 miles to get our firewood. I like to get the alligator juniper. It burns long and hot. You have to deal with more ash than other wood in the area but worth it. We have to drive near Wupatki National Park. We can only take dead and dead standing trees here. It costs us $60 for a 12 chord permit.

I spend my winters collecting/cutting my own firewood (in Vermont) from my own acreage. Mixed hardwoods- my 'woodlot' is about 87 acres. Country is hilly, and not all of those acres are all that accessible, but I manage to cut about 2 1/2 cords each year to be processed and stacked to dry. I burn wood each year that I cut two winters ago. those couple of cords keep me nice and warm.

Coming along really well for the new road. I bet you have thought many times that you were glad you purchased that tilt bucket, man that is the cats meow for ditches and things. Your pretty much right on, the more the economy stagnates the more housing projects slow down. No land clearing not much firewood poles etc. I always thought no matter how much firewood you have, it's like a savings account, and wood very seldom gets cheaper. Liked the video sir :)

From Jul 3, 2023 Ten state attorneys general filed a 60-day notice of intent to sue the EPA if the agency doesn’t update its wood-burning appliance emissions standards In a letter of intent filed Thursday, the states allege the agency failed to “timely review and revise” its wood heater performance standards, which the agency is required to renew every eight years under the Clean Air Act. The states include New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Oregon, Minnesota, Washington, Vermont and Alaska-the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency is also involved. Question- if Nov. 5th goes pear shape, what's plan B?

Hi Mike and family, Watching the video I am reminded of what I was taught many years ago by someone who was definitely more experienced in excavation than I was at the time. He told me that in order to cut good ditches, I, needed to cut the bottom and shape the sides. So what that means is you make a flat bottom and then shape the sides down to the width that you require. It is a little faster and usually took a few passes to do it but I did not have a tilt bucket like you have. Anyways have a good day and it looks great by the way.

Mike, those log lenght truck loads of firewood use to cost about $400 years ago, but in our area have not seen in a while. It looks like you have the trail widened sufficiently that you could take the dump trailer up and down it, so for the grading and ditching, if you had a ball welded to the top of the blade, you could use the excavator to move the trailer, scoop, swing and pile into the trailer, then dump when full. This would greatly improved efficiency. You could also use this when harvesting wood, cut the logs into poles that fit your trailer, then use the excavator like a dolly to get it out of the woods. Regarding wood supply, with 100 acres of trees you could certainly meet your personal needs just with storm damage, and disease/insect killed trees. Not sure how many acres it would take to meet your commercial firewood needs on a sustainable level.

Still a lot of building here in the southwestern Idaho area. Trouble is, all these new homes, apartments, and businesses going in, yet they've skipped updating all the 30+ year old infrastructure to handle all the added traffic, so its backed up traffic all the time. A couple of new subdivisions have gone in here where I live, pretty nice homes, and apparently must be catering to those with RV lifestyles because each garage has the standard 16'x7' garage door then they've got an RV bay next to it. Of course the house takes up the whole property, so you have very little if any yard space to do anything with. I've honestly been thinking of trying to sell my place which is a little over 3/4 of an acre and getting something smaller with a large shop or garage that I can setup my woodworking tools in, and have a smaller home and property to take care of...since I'm alone I can't keep up with anything since I'm working most of the time. I get my firewood early in the season to avoid possibly not being able to get any, plus I'd rather cut and split firewood when its not 100 degrees LOL.

Just a thought for the downed/damaged trees and future PA thinning....Another small clearing with a wood bunker.... A.Oak could be split and left in this bunker for seasoning and future IBC tote stacking. B. Non-oak could be cut into rounds and moved to the big woodyard as needed. Overall though, it seems like you need people to clear/thin at your PA & WV properties Having others do it allows you to focus on splitting and lumber at both Any thoughts on maybe selling firewood and lumber in WV on a when you're there basis?

I have no experience at all so I learn from you in every video I watch. I figure that the excavator does so much more in moving the dirt out of the way than the box blade and that may be the reason why yiu are doing it this way. I'm no expert of course, but it looks to me like that tilt bucket is quite a time-saver. I suppose you could do that same work with a straight bucket or a skid-steer, but it wouldn't be as tidy or as fast.

Not sure how far back your videos are recorded but I live around Harrisburg pa and we have been getting 3 to 4 days of rain every week for the last two and half weeks. I’m talking when it starts days of raining. It’s no downpour but just steady light rain. I run lawn care maintenance work and we just can’t get anything done. And cutting grass is just miserable. Needs cut twice maybe every three times a week and that’s just not possible. I hope it slows down like yesterday. But we know how it goes in Pennsylvania. Goes from rain everyday to hot burned out yards tomorrow. Lol

Curious if you have built in qny sort of backstop for your firing range, i.e. railroad ties nailed together then covered over with dirt?

Here in England [and I'm talking England as part of the United Kingdom and not your US New England!] we have a lot of log burners and we use a lot of wood as a consequence. But over the years I've found that, despite their claims, my local suppliers are not at all reliable with their seasoning! And some of those who are now kiln drying to, supposedly, 20% or less as required by law here. . . well, let's just say that when they've tipped the load and gone, and you start stacking you can tell by the weight of the logs which ones will have been on the outside of cage in the kiln and got the benefit of the hot air, and which were in the middle and didn't do quite so well! So my beautifully stacked pallets of kiln dried birch [and I can have a choice of beech, ash, maple or oak] now come from Poland, a mere 1,250 miles away from the dealer, before travelling another 200 miles from the north of England to my home where the pallets are wheeled straight into my garage off the back of the lorry with no tipping, no stacking and no clearing up! After investing the equivalent of $15 in a meter, the moisture content of the logs throughout the pallet are a consistent 11 to 13% max. Oh, yes, the price? Less than 20 bucks more than the locals who, despite my own preference for buying local, just can't get it right! Glad to see Hunter, albeit very briefly, in a recent video, by the way. I always think of him when watching your films. God bless you all.

Good morning! I'm going to have to disagree with your assessment of the volume of firewood in your wood bunker... I believe it is much more like 82.4% full 😂
