On my reading of Sandel, I disagree that the orthodox interpretation of the communitarian objection to Western liberalism applies neatly to him. He himself distances himself from the standard communitarian position (that community or tradition has the right to assert itself). His critique of Rawls is more fundamental, i.e. that the principles of justice depend on the ends they serve. Dr. Ragharamaraju is half right. He is right that Sandel's criticism of Rawls centers on the axiological thinness of the Rawlsian deontological subject. He is wrong that Sandel's stance is a conventional conservative communitarianism proceeding from "realism," a concern for practicality. Sandel's critique of Rawls does not proceed from practicality. For Sandel the deontological idea of justice is an "incomplete aspiration" that prevents us from cultivating cooperative values; but the critique is grounded in the independent argument that it is impossible to derive a sound theory of justice from a combo of Kantian deontology and a Humean conception of human nature, that those are ultimately incompatible. A revealing quote: "Gratuitous displays of physical courage in the midst of tranquil conditions can prove disruptive of the very tranquility they fail to appreciate and quite possibly can fail to replace. It is similar with justice. If, out of a misplaced sense of justice, a close friend of long-standing repeatedly insists on calculating and paying his precise share of every common expenditure, or refuses to accept any favor or hospitality except at the greatest protest and embarrassment, not only will I feel compelled to be reciprocally scrupulous but at some point may begin to wonder whether I have not misunderstood our relationship. The circumstances of benevolence will to this extent have diminished, and the circumstances of justice grown. This follows as a consequence of the reflexive dimension of the (subjective aspect of the) circumstances of justice. But as we have already seen, there is no guarantee that the new sense of justice can fully replace the old spontaneity, even in those cases where no injustice results. Since the exercise of justice in inappropriate conditions will have brought about an overall decline in the moral character of the association, justice in this case will have been not a virtue but a vice." I have grown averse to isms. As soon as it is an ism it becomes dogmatic & a possible danger. Just take your ideas and go into the community you live in & practice them. I for one have an organic garden in the middle of a suburban neighborhood and I invite my neighbors to participate, learn what I know and pick. Read “The education of an Urban Gardener to get the basic idea. I am particularly interested in allowing children to participate. They seem to love it with their open hearts. No leaders here - just sharing. This garden has replaced a lawn and there are many water sucking, useless lawns where I live that are treated with chemical fertilizers and pesticides.😢 I am finally, after 5 years, beginning to see worms here. What a joy.

We should not be attached to the fruits of our actions. Whether or not something is realistic should have very little to do with the pursuit of Justice. Liberalism is an unjust regime because it is based on the partial interest of the bourgeoisie+banker interest and rejects the common good. It also rejects the notion of the good in favor for bourgeois safety. There is no bigger haters of American Liberalism than Americans themselves. There is another version of America and that is its rooted version, which is not Liberal but nationalist not imperialistic but nationalist, not capitalistic, but economic populist, and not atheist but Religious.
