Should’ve mentioned the bike lying behind you at 4:27 with no wheels, basically just a stripped frame. Obviously theft seems to be an issue at UCD. Noticed another bike with no saddle, either stolen or owner took it with so it wouldn’t be.

nice Video. what length U lock do you have - 7 inch or 9 inch ? Is 13mm krypto (vs 14mm) worth extra weight?
@Niknamew
@Niknamew 2 жыл бұрын
I think mine's something like a 7 inch. I'm not too experienced with kryptonite's chain and lock combos, but I'm betting they're pretty decent. Whether they're worth the weight is a whole other question. If your bike is on the nicer side, it wouldn't be a bad idea. But if your bike isn't all that nice, a simple u lock and chain combo will be fine.

Is it me or are you just wasting time with the chain? You still only have ONE security measure when you put the chain inside the Ulock. A thief would only have have to overcome the Ulock and steal the bike as the chain would simply slide off the Ulock when it’s compromised and opened. A better plan would be to slide the chain through the rack and a different part of the bike away from the Ulock.

The cable is there so someone can’t just hit the quick release and steal your tire, instead they have to go through the effort to cut the cable or u lock.

With such a horribly crappy bike as this, I would want it to be stolen to get rid of it. Let's look at all the things that are wrong with this bike. 1. No fenders. So if the road is wet, I will soon have a "skunk stripe" of road filth on my back. And my legs and lower body will be showered with filth from the front wheel. 2. No front light. Therefore dangerous, stupid and illegal to ride after dark. 3. No red rear reflector. Therefore dangerous, stupid and illegal to ride after dark. 4. Only one reflector on the rear wheel to provide side visibility. Two are required by California law. Or else reflectorized tires, which the bicycle does not have.Therefore dangerous, stupid and illegal to ride after dark. Note: At 1:30 we see the reflector on the opposite side of the tire from the valve stem. But at 6:55 the rear reflector is gone! 5. No front reflector to provide side visibility as required by California law. Or else reflectorized tires, which the bicycle does not have.Therefore dangerous, stupid and illegal to ride after dark. 6. No bell. Although not required by California law, this makes it dangerous and stupid to ride at any time. 7. External gears. High maintenance and prone to throw the chain. 8. External brakes. High maintenance and dangerous unless properly maintained. 9. No rear rack, front basket or any other way of carrying cargo. A student is always carrying things from textbooks to notebooks to beer. 10. Racing handlebars. These are OK if one is on a racecourse with no motor vehicle traffic. But in Davis, California, we want a North Road or Dutch-style parallel handlebars. These allow us to sit upright, so we can see our surroundings. Also, good posture means my back will not be complaining in 20 years time.

Sir, please do not insult my bike and wish that it would be stolen. I do have lights, I do have fenders, and I use them both when I have to, but they were not on my bike in this video because it was September and it was obviously daytime outside. The next time you think someone's bike is horrible because it has such common cycling features as racing handlebars, external brakes, and external gearing, please do us all a favor, and shut up. Boastful snobs like you are why some people don't feel like they belong in the cycling community.

And here we have a master of nitpicking and captain of condescension. You’ve truly outdone yourself this time. Your comment reads less like constructive criticism and more like a 10-point manifesto on how to be the neighborhood’s cranky bike inspector. Congratulations on your extensive knowledge of California bike laws. I’m sure the DMV is preparing your knighthood for services to “spotting reflectors” as I write- if they haven't done so already. Let’s address a few highlights: No Fenders? Really? Most people would worry about the wheels, the frame, or, I don’t know, the actual locks. But you’re here concerned about a potential skunk stripe. Are you commuting through mud pits daily, or is a single dirt particle breaching your personal space too much for you to bear? Reflectors, reflectors, and more reflectors. You know who cares this much about reflectors, Kevin? The same people who care about ensuring each blade of grass is trimmed to a precise angle. You seem like a 32-degree type of guy. Maybe a 35. I hope your own bike is a Christmas tree of reflectors because otherwise, this is one tragic case of “do as I say, not as I do.” External brakes? Kevin, do you mean the type of brakes found on 90% of bikes? High maintenance? Unless you’re using your bike as a getaway vehicle to flee from SWAT teams twice a week, regular maintenance will suffice. You're making it sound like external breaks might cause the bike to spontaneously combust at any moment. No bell? What’s the matter, Kevin? Missing that cheery “ding ding” to announce your noble presence? I imagine you striding around with a personal butler ringing a bell for every law you recite. Racing handlebars in Davis? How dare he! Such blasphemy... my heart can't take it. Anyway, your plea for Dutch-style handlebars will be filed under “no one cares.” Maybe you can open a handlebar appreciation society in your free time. But let’s get serious: no one’s forcing you to watch bike lock tutorials if they offend your delicate sensibilities. Your rant comes across less as helpful and more as a bitter exercise in nitpicking. For someone who critiques reflectors, you seem to have very little reflection on how much time you’ve wasted with these irrational criticisms. Better luck next time, chief of bike etiquette. 🫡

@@Niknamew More like "tomato battery charger" a cable is a very different thing than a chain. Its like calling a chain on your bike a watch band, they are different.
