I have a theory about why Otonashi arrived in purgatory before Angel and I haven’t found that theory anywhere else online. It may be a dumb thought, but try this on for size: when someone is an organ donor, they donate all viable organs if possible. Well, what if multiple organs went into multiple people and Otonashi wouldn’t appear in purgatory until every one of his organs was no longer in use? So, Kanade beats him there. That’s just means his heart stopped beating, but his other organ(s) was/were still going strong. Just a thought.

It's way simpler than that: Kanade died wishing that she could thank the donor, thus Otonashi was sent to the purgatory because he's the donor, he went there so Kanade could thank him and move on. Otonashi had no reason to be there since he was satisfied after getting everyone from the accident to sign up those papers to become donors, he literally says that he had no regrets and the Programmer confirms that some people may end up appearing there for uncommon reasons other than having regrets when they died. I honestly wish people paid more attention to the stuff they watched, because most "plot holes" they tend to point out are usually explained in one way or another.

It never crossed my mind that kanade wasn't able to thank otonashi for giving her his heart at the ending even though at the beginning she stabbed him to check if he has a heart, which sorta explains why the title is called angel beats its pretty clever

i would also like to point out that the opening title itself is foreshadowing! my soul, your beats with "my soul" meaning kanade's literal soul/her body and "your beats" meaning otonashi's heartbeat since he quite literally gave her his heart. it's her soul and his heartbeat, such a clever play on words. i love this anime ❤️

My theory for Otonashi being there was because he actually did fulfill what he wanted to do by saving those people, but it was Tachibana’s wish to meat the man who gave her a heart that brought him there

Here are some theories I came up with on why Kannade arrived before Otonashi in the purgatory and why Otonashi is not the programmer. if it makes any sense. A) Otonashi was probably in the process on passing on until his soul probably got stuck in the realm between the new life and purgatory for a long time which prevented him from moving forward. Since Kannade has the regret for not thanking the donor, he then appears in the purgatory somehow. Hence, he woke up without any memories in the purgatory. B) Otonashi was probably already born in the new life and lived his life completely or shortly died without any regrets. Then his soul returned to the purgatory without any memories and helped others and Kannade to move on from the Afterlife. Man I love this anime. Hopefully my theories make sense lol.

I just like fact that the new media for AB released in the form of a gacha collab for Maeda's gacha game Heaven Burns Red for its 1st Anniversary the event called Where The Cosmos Continued to Bloom focuses on Miyuki Irie, the drummer of GirlDeMo some might say in a sense it is 2nd Beat and hopefully we get more events focusing on the other characters

Oh the first beat was cancelled, that's sad I just finished that VN and it's really interesting to know the personality and back stories of the characters that barely had a screentime in the anime. I was looking forward to Shina, Yusa and TK's back story... RIP.

I think Otonashi forgot his memories cos you don't pass onto the next life with your memories. He said he had lived a fulfilled life at the end. Obviously he died first, his heart went to Kanade, he went somewhere between heaven and purgatory until kanade went to the afterlife, which is what summoned Otonashi there in the first place. He died in peace, never having to be there in the first place but because of Kanade wanting to thank the person who gave her her youth, otonashi had to end up there before fully passing on.

Excellent video! I hope it gets more attention! This series also remains one of my favorites across my years of watching anime. I've watched the show with many of my friends to see what they think of it as well. I remembered the giant plot hole at the end and tried to do some investigating, just in case it was brought up. I ran across the programmer theory, and I bring it up when people ask about the ending, but I also found a chart on the angel beats subreddit that explained that Otonashi could have also been placed in another afterlife after dying, almost as a purgatory. I think this is another alternative as religion is intentionally kept ambigous by the show, and it also alleviates the pain Otonashi would have gone through waiting for Kanade, whether or not you think that makes the story more impactful.

I do remember them mentioning a number of religions during the show, but never specifying which they followed. The Programmer Theory, imo, is one of the best fan theories in any show ever. There's so much evidence behind it, and it makes it seem like the show intentionally left that plot hole there so it can be discovered. The similarities between Otonashi and the Programmer are too obvious for it to not be at least credible.

@@SlightNegativeActually, MrHunteru has a pretty solid-sounding video on why Otonashi can’t be the programmer. Now it’s been years since I’ve watched the show in full and haven’t experienced the side material, so hard to confirm some of his points for myself, but apparently he has gone through all the material in depth. He pointed out that Otonashi didn’t know English or understand programming after he regained his memories, both of which were required to be the programmer. When Yuri asks the AI who the programmer is, he specifically says it’s no one she knows. And in order to have given the Kanade from the series his heart, he would have had to have reincarnated before instead of resetting himself to be an NPC. And all the characters start off in NPC uniforms according to the manga so that doesn’t necessarily indicate anything special for him. He has a theory on the plot hole too, can’t say I find it vacuum-seal tight but if you’re interested the video’s less than nine minutes long.

The AI who tells Yuri about how love isnt supposed to bloom in purgatory looks kinda like Yuu Otosaka. I was rewatching Angel Beats today thinking about how he looked familiar, but couldn't figure out who he looked like. Then you brought up how Angel Beats was referenced in Charlotte and I was like ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Ok, how did I not see this earlier. Angel Beats is one of my favorite anime of all time and still holds a special place in my heart. Glad to see an Angel Beats iceberg made. And I did surprisingly learned some new stuff here too. Though I am starting to think the Angel Beats as a series is just cursed. I knew about the show originally supposed to have 24 episodes and the visual novel having more but man, it is pretty disappointing to hear that most of these projects never really get to see the light of day. Though I am glad that there is at least something new that came out involving Angel Beats, even if it is just a crossover with a mobile game, Heaven Burns Red. I wonder if that would be an entry in the iceberg if this was made today. Also, that cameo with TK and Matsushita the 5th as fighting game characters is the greatest thing I have ever seen. I usually always joke about TK just being Terry Bogard and I always thought that Matsushita always reminded me of Goro Daimon from King of Fighters so it feels like it all comes full circle with this cameo, even if it uses the Street Fighter 4 versus screen instead of anything SNK. It can also be a reference to how the two formed a friendship over dancing.

I really hope that someday they can 'remake' angel beats, so we can have the planned 26~ episodes, and give each character the depth and story they should have. Just don't make it a netflix live action adaptation.
