As the Four Fiends moved into the PlayStation era, we got to see plenty of creative interpretations of the original Four Fiends that appeared in Final Fantasy I (Lich, Kraken, Tiamat and Marilith). They appeared in traditional form in Final Fantasy IX, but we also saw other variations in the form of Jenova, Seifer and Seymour!
There was also another type, "Ode To Tradition", which is based around Chinese Astrology. This was first seen in Final Fantasy XI, which featured Genbu, Seiryu, Suzaku and Byakko.
There's also plenty of representation within the spin-off games. Dissidia, Final Fantasy Dimensions, Brave Exvius, Bravely Default an dmore have all featured the Four Fiends!
Join us, as we delve into the intricacies of the Four Fiends trope and how it has been put into play throughout the history of the franchise, starting with Final Fantasy VII through to Final Fantasy XV + Spinoffs!

Kingdom Hearts had a a four fiends reference too, if you think about it. Hook, Oogie, Ursula, and Jafar worked directly under secondary antagonist Maleficent. Each one could also be tied to an element. Oogie representing Earth, as he merged with his manor, and a majority of the insects that made his innards were burrowing ones. Ursula representing Water, because she's an aquatic creature. Jafar representing Fire, because his second form attacks by throwing fire balls. And Hook representing Wind because Sora learns to fly right before facing him, Pirate Ships use wind to propell themselves, and he can defy the laws of gravity (when chased by the crocodile, and if you light up his keister). Also there's an overarching Fiendish Battles in the form of Xehanort's Heartless, Xehanort's Nobody, Xehanort's Younger Self, and Xehanort's Older Self.

Another area that XIV shows the four fiends thing is with the boss Notorious Monsters of the different areas of Eureka. Now, I haven't finished the story of Eureka so I don't know how they are in the story of Eureka, but there's Pazuzu in Anemos, who uses lots of wind attacks, Louhi in Pagos, who uses lots of ice attacks (and it's here where we see the association with death/undeath with how you get him to spawn, by killing a bunch of undead), Pennthesilia or however you spell her name in Pyros, who uses a lot of fire and you fight her in a volcano, and there's... whatever Hydatos has whom the element of water presumably belongs to. I wouldn't know, I haven't reached Hydatos yet.

Pazuzu made a return in Eureka: Anemos and in Pagos i would say Louhi represents the ice golem pretty well plus they all have respective weaknesses and there are 2 more major bosses coming for Eureka, a fire one and an unknown one

Hey guys, PSA, FF7's world is not Gaia, that was a mistake from English marketing materials, it's only known as the planet in-game in the re-released versions with updated scripts and in the rest of the compilation. Planet used to be capitalized, but they've gone away from that too

For Tiamat that ring around him represents a godly affinity akin to the Buddhist Halo often seen in depictions of figures who have achieved enlightenment and some of the Shinto- Buddhist Gods themselves, like Raijin (nothing to do with the thunder) though. Usually this halo is seen as something that separates them with imagery from our world and another transcendent one.

I'm glad you included Final Fantasy Legend despite it technically being a rebranded SaGa game. I think it made sense to present it as a Final Fantasy game in the west, as at that time it released the only mainline Final Fantasy we had was the first game, and they share many similarities. Both open with very similar text crawls when booted up, both see you making a party of four with different options to choose from (though in FFL you could go with less, or solo the game like I did). Both have four fiends that you fight again in a gauntlet near the end, and warmech, one of the series' first recurring enemies, appears. Before Chocobos and Moogles made their way to the west, Warmech was one of Final Fantasy's most recognizable creatures being the first optional superboss in the series so fans of the first game would definitely recognize it.

I feel that some of these were stretching... And then conviniently forgotten about in regards to FF13. Like, something you'd mention earlier " _You fight this one guy two times, therefore it's four fiends_ " and then go " _But in FF13 you only fight this guy 3 times so that doens't seem right_ ". Aside from that, great video.

Zeithri I think with the other games he was thinking that some of them *possibly* could’ve been examples, whereas FFXIII pretty clearly didn’t care about most of the series recurring elements, so if it wasn’t a clear example, it clearly wasn’t intended.

For FFXIV, you could also look at just the ARR Primals as depictions of the 4 fiends. Initially in the game the city states are worried about the threats of Ifrit, Titan, Garuda, and Leviathan representing fire, earth, wind, and water respectively. Ramuh exists, but the Gridanians aren't as concerned about him since they know the's more of a guardian of the sylphs than an aggressor like the other four, and Shiva added later, but she wasn't as much a primal as an invocation created by Iceheart. I expect that with the game ongoing, there will be even further allusions to the four fiends in that game as it goes on.

Could you consider the Black Waltz from FF9 as a type of 4 fiends? The first Black Waltz has the element of Ice, the Second Black Waltz has the element of Earth (due to being weak to wind and nullifying earth even though there is no way to do either damage at that point in the game), and the Third Black Waltz is Lightning/Air. As for the Fiend of Fire, I think we could consider Vivi for that role. His first spell is fire, and it is the only spell he uses out of battle and in cut scenes. So I would say as an allusion Black Waltz 1 - Fiend of Ice Black Waltz 2 - Fiend of Earth Black Waltz 3 - Fiend of Air Vivi - Fiend of Fire

I think it should be called the "Four Fiendish Fights", mainly for alliterative purposes (I'm a bit of a sucker for that kind of thing!)! I also later realised, after the first part, that Dark Souls does it too: four Lords and Lord Souls (Furtive Pigmy and the Dark Soul; Gwyn and the Light Soul; the Witch of Izalith and the Life Soul; and Nito and the Death Soul)! Four main Bosses for four main Souls to gain entry to Firelink Altar: Seath the Scaleless and the Four Kings of Anor Londo with their Bequeathed Souls along with the Witch of Izalith and her daughters now the Bed of Chaos and finally Gravelord Nito! Also, eight Primordial Serpents! And the four Knights of Gwyn: Dragonslayer "Leo" Ornstein, "Wolf" Artorias Abysswalker, "Hornet" Ciaran of the Blades and Hawkeye "Hawk" Gough! It carries over into II with four Primal Bonfires and four Kings, the main one and the three DLCs! I haven't played III yet! No Xbox One or PS4... Also it's "yor-mun-gand-er"! Everyone forgets the last letter, but is there: Jörmungandr!

So far in FF14 we've had the four set in story with Garuda, Ifrit, Titan, followed by Ultima Weapon. And of course the Four Heavenly Lords with Genbu, Byakko, Suzaku, and Seiryu. But most of the Major bosses have been summons/Guardian Forces. And a possible nod to the Snake boss could be Lakshmi

Thomas Irwin It honestly depends on taste. I enjoyed the entire game to get about 120 hours of playtime. However, I was translating the game since it was free-to-play in Japanese for FFWiki for 2 years, so I might be a bit biased. I was more into it due to the phantom stone system becoming exactly like FFVI in the premium version. Yes, the lack of a world map can be a bit of a let down, but the game gets better due to the story getting better around Chapter 2, and Chapters 4-5, since that's when it becomes full Chrono Trigger with the future timeline portions. I will not lie the first arc has some filler moments, but the second arc is somewhat more fast-paced and has better moments. So basically, if you like a hefty story that was made by the original director of Chrono Trigger (this game was made with the story elements originally for the abandoned Chrono Break sequel), enjoyed the magicite system of FFVI, the battle system from FFX, rocking music, and a game full of hours of content - this game is for you. However, if you dislike the lack of a world map, free-to-play rpg round battles, a few hours of filler, and FANSERVICE summons (albeit censored from the original F2P version) - you may have a hard time getting into it and if you can't get into by Chapter 3-5, you may as well just quit like my boyfriend did lol! @_@

You missed the 4 aeons in FFX, Valefor, Ifrit, Shiva, Ixion. Your first encounter with each of them is before the true antagonist is revealed to be an "ultimate Aeon", there are four summoner battles (each using a different one of the four), and they each have a super boss form of at endgame in the form of the Dark Aeons, so FFX does the Four Fiends in all 3 of iterations. Sinspawn (Four generals) Seymour (Four Encounters) and Aeons (Four Guardians) The four fiends might also be mirrored in Bahamut, since Valefor is a bird (crane) Ifrit has a feline face (tiger) and Bahamut isnt actually a dragon. In zoroastrian lore, Bahamut is a huge dragon-turtle on who's shell the world rests which could be represented by the Yevon halo thing on Bahamut's back. So you have a crane, tiger, and a dragon-turtle.

Lich by name wasn't in XIV, but Nybeleth Obdilord, the floor 100 boss of Palace of the Dead, may be interpreted in a similar role - in addition to being a Tactics Ogre reference, he is an undead necromancer (calling back to the Lich in D&D). Also (and this may have been after the video's release, since you cite Seiryu as not yet appearing), there's an argument to be made for Eureka. Each zone has a specific antagonist that has to be fought for relic upgrade materials, three of which are specifically aligned to the zone's elemental affinity - Pazuzu (for Air/Anemos), Louhi (Ice/Pagos), and Pentheselia (Fire/Pyros). The fourth, the Crystalline Dragon, doesn't directly align to Hydatos (water), BUT switches from Fire to Ice - a mixture that would produce water. Of course, these also don't directly serve a "big bad" that we know of (though the first three ARE Voidsent and thus may serve something else in the Void), but they still seem reminiscent of the concept.

Seeing as we're trying to link some of these fights with the original four fiends, it might be worth noting where the fights are as allusions to the elements? I'm thinking mainly of Ultros and Sinspawn here for Vi & X- Two of the Ultros fights are in the Water (River battle) and Air (Airship battle) and the other 2 might have links? Opera House is ultimately where you fight the Earth Dragon or you could argue that the Cave fight is representative of Earth? The struggle is linking either of these to fire, but maybe i'm just not remembering well enough. Sinspawn as well- if we take the four in mainland Spira (Not Dream Zanarkand), we have one fought in the water, one at Kilika's Fire Temple, One in the air (on Sin's back), and the last in a forest- very traditional Earth right there. Basicaly just wondering if the Produucers were thinking outside the box with these fights, and maybe others too? Like in VII the weapons are Underwater, Flying, Desert- is there a link to Diamond with fire that we're not seing/I can't remember? Just a thought that i will definitely be looking out for on my next playthroughs of all these games.

You guys missed it in XV. The four "fiends" are there. The messengers. There are 24 messengers of the Astrals. There are 6 Astrals so it stands to reason that each Astral has 4 messengers assigned to them. In epside Ardyn it mentions that when Ifrit "fell" during the Astral War, that his messengers fell with him. 4 messengers. They went evil when Ifrit did. Those are your Four Fiends. I suspect they were Cerberus, Marilith, Ultros and ??? Maybe Melusine. Or Naglfar. I just wish they would have put in battles with all of them in the game.

Ever since FFXIII I have suspected that Garland was a l'cie of Chaos and the four fiends that appeared in FFI and FFIX were his Cieth forms while he finally went ragnorak at the final battle. Also when FFXIII-3 came out, this interpretation of mine just fit even better with Garland's claims back in FFIX. Those stone faces were the parts of Chaos that had yet to be reincarnated upon Gaia.

You see this ‘four fiends’ theme in other media as well especially in Japanese media. Time for a Fun fact: Season 2 of Digimon pays direct homage to the four ‘guardians’ in the form of Azulongmon (A gigantic sky dragon that guards Eastern hemisphere), Baihumon (a Huge white tiger that guards the Western hemisphere), Zhuqiaomon (A huge Vermilion bird that guards the Southern Hemisphere) and Ebonwumon (A large black tortoise that guards the northern hemisphere) and they all serve under Huanglongmon (A dragon of light and darkness that oversees all in the case of the digital world in Digimon.)

For FF:BE, the sworn six are actually the remains of the 8 heroes of Paladia, each one was made imortal and given armor that absorbed and focused the energies of a specific element. In FF:BE they have Light, Dark, Ice, and Lightning join the elements instead of being aspects of the 4 or 8 main crystals. The other two have spoilers as part of their story.

As someone else in the comments has already mentioned, FFXIV also has the "final bosses" of each area of Eureka to count towards the Four Fiends trope. Anemos had the Wind aspected Pazuzu, and Pagos had Louhi, who is Ice aspected (both being references to previous games). Now, with Pyros out, we have the Fire aspected Penthesilea- and we've still got one more area left. IN ADDITION TO THAT, you can actually make a case for the main Primals of A Realm Reborn, though it's a bit more of a stretch I'll admit. Major FFXIV spoilers ahead, from A Realm Reborn up to the most recent patches to Stormblood. Ifrit (Fire aspected), Titan (Earth aspected), and Garuda (Wind) are all fought in the main story (twice in Titans case) and you can fight them at two harder difficulties. Later on you fight Leviathan (Water) as a part of an update to ARR's main scenario. Now, I know what you're probably thinking- but you fight Ramuh and Shiva too! And you're right, but here's the key difference. Ramuh isn't really thought to be much of a problem until he's summoned, and even then he's reasonable enough that he let's you strike up a deal with him. He's not really out to get you- he just wants to test you, and that's a pretty major departure from the other four. Shiva, on the other hand, is EXTREMELY different from every other Primal up until Tsukuyomi in Stormblood's Under the Moonlight patch, because rather than another entity entirely being summoned, one that a beast tribe actually worships, it is instead one woman- Ysayle -taking the form of the primal herself. Thus, while we see the build up from a mile away, the Scions don't really have a clue what to expect. But Leviathan, like Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda, is a constant thorn in Eorzea's side, for Limsa Lominsa especially as they already have Titan to deal with. You hear whispers about him in the msq during the build up to your first fight against Titan. If i remember correctly, it's implied (maybe outright stated even, it's been awhile now) that the ONLY reason he's not being summoned as often as the other three is that the Sahagin, the tribe that worships him, suffered a pretty massive blow during the calamity, which is why they're fighting the Maelstrom for the spawning grounds and can't really afford to gather the crystals they'd need to summon their Primal...at least until the Ascians interfere, as they do. Again, it's definitely a stretch but they're at least worth mentioning. Then of course, you mentioned Kraken (which, by the way, you also fight at the end of Sastasha Hard Mode) and Tiamat, but what about some of the ones you mentioned as stand ins for the trope in III? The Ahriman (now named Angra Mainyu) and Cerberus both appear in the 24man raid World of Darkness- as does and angry five headed hyrda/dragon- all of which sound like call backs to some previous "Fiends" and worth at least mentioning, no? And thinking about it, Echidna also shows up, but in Void Ark as the final boss of that 24 man raid! AND, as far as your VI choices go, The Warring Triad appear in the Heavensward expansion, this time with names- Sephirot- the Fiend, Sophia- the Goddess, and Zurvan- the Demon. Basically, I'm saying FFXIV had much much more for you to cover and I find it a shame that The Four Lord's was all you really went over. It's 4am so there's probably a good amount of typos and missing or misremembered info but I can't bring myself to care right now- not like anyone will actually read a FFXIV nerd's rambley comment anyway.

Nice "Oh" moment for me with the bit about the original 4 fiends of Chinese mythology and the FF0 crystal states. And seeing as they all exist to serve the goddess/necro-scientist lady they (the crystals and the states) are her fiends. Too bad you don't have to fight the Vermillion Bird's corrupt leadership at the end. Then it'd be perfect.

In all your videos ive noticed you never mention the crystal chronicles. Is this because it's not considered a part of the franchise or is it just such an obscure title in the franchise not many have played?

Another argument for the black waltzes for the four fiendish battles is you do fight one of them twice (on the train to Alexandria), making a total of 4 fights.

Kurasame from Type-0 is one of the Four Champions of Suzaku (朱雀四天王), which uses some of the same kanji as the Four Fiends (四天王). They each have a different fighting style, whether it be ice or fire magic, or hand to hand combat. I feel like this heavily implies that they could be considered the Four Fiends of Suzaku rather than the Four Champions.
@Brahmsonite

四天王 is "4 Heavens King". I think it's some kind of emperor from Chinese lore. I only know it as the 'super king' from a crazy ancient Japanese chess varient with 400+ pieces per player. It moved like a queen, but could pass over any number of pieces; killing them all.

I looked at a wiki, friend. And now I checked a dictionary (I do speak Japanese) and I was deceived by a fault in the Wikipedia article. However, the "Four Fiends" business is a catchy simplification for Western audiences that are ignorant of Buddhism.

Shi-ten-noh 「四天王」is a word that identifies four gods that safeguard/govern Buddhism in the service of a fifth. They live on the cardinal points halfway up the sides of Mt. Sumeru, the 'highest mountain that rises in the center of the world'.

Surprised you didn't mention the primals of A Realm Reborn alongside Ultima, as Ifrit, Titan and Garuda each guard an elemental crystal you have to obtain, and then are absorbed by ultima who is under the control of Gaius the primary villain, who uses their essence during his battle in the final confrontation of the game.

Well, Emerald and Ruby weren’t, but the other 3 were. But then again, that’s still only 3, and you don’t fight Sapphire. Honestly all of 7’s “4 fiends” are a stretch in terms of whether or not they’re deserving of the title, but it’s interesting all the same.

Well since you never fight Tseng in FFVII, you could probably count Hojo as the fourth as he is still technically a part of Shinra regardless of his true goal of sending more energy to Sephiroth. And if you don't want to count him you could count Scarlet and Heidegger as one fiendish battle inside the Proudclad.

*pokepoke* the esper fights take the place of the four feinds in 15 actualy, granted you only face them once each but its the closest we get in that game, maybe there would have been a second encounter with each had the game been allowed to be finished properly and not rushed out the door as it had been but we may never know

Seymour Flux was absolutely nails and I usually cheesed it with Aeon overdrives. I've never not completely beasted Seymour Omnis. What a fuckin' wasted fight. He should have been made WAY harder.
