Hi. I would love to see a follow up review on the hydroguard. I’m currently using hydrogen peroxide in my Kratky system , but I’m curious to see how well this does and might switch. 👍🏾

The EC meter should be referred to as the TDS meter for the sake of understanding its purpose. TDS stands for total dissolved salts. Therefore this is an indication not only of the strength of the nutrients in your solution; but if you test the solution prior to switching out your reservoir and compare it to the original number you will have a indication of the rate at which your plants are absorbing their nutrients

"With some exceptions, the optimal pH range for hydroponically grown crops is generally between 5.5 and 6. Many fruits and vegetables, such as melons, apples, beans, squash, and tomatoes prefer that range. Blueberries, on the other hand, need a lower, more acidic pH between 4.0 and 5.0. It’s a good idea to use separate nutrient reservoirs for plants with similar pH ranges. Some hydroponic crops have a wide optimal pH range. Pumpkin, for example, will thrive in a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Crops that require alkaline conditions include kale, onions, and peas, which prefer pH levels between 6.0 and 7. Mint plants tip the scale at an optimal pH range of 7.0 to 8.0."

@@joshuarudd6297 To make it more interesting different crops require different nutrient formulations and EC. The minerals in your source water add to you nutrient formulation so its useful to know what is in your water. The water suppliers here test and publish details of mineral content, ph, ec, hardness etc which makes it easy. I make my nutrients from scratch and use reverse osmosis water so i know exactly what is in the nutrient solution (no unknowns). If you have high calcium carbonate levels in you water its best to use a nitric acid based ph down to control the ph as it converts calcium carbonate into calcium nitrate which the plants can use. If you use the more common phosphoric acid based ph down, the carbonate will be converted into calcium phosphate which is insoluble and therefore unavailable to the plants. Its not good for your filters or nozzles either :) Be aware that the Uptake of nutrients from the nutrient solution causes the ph to change, for example, uptake of nitrate (NO3) causes the nutrient ph to rise, uptake of potassium (K) causes it to fall. I prefer drain to waste, nothing comes back to taint or alter the formulation so the nutrient solution remains balanced from start to finish. The last drop has the same elemental makeup, ec and ph as the first. A recirculating reservoir is only a known quantity when you first mix it up, elements are not taken up evenly so it gradually goes out of balance as elements are removed At some point you have to replace it with a fresh batch, if you dont know what is left in it ..its tricky to judge when that point is.

That seems pretty complicated! Thanks for breaking it down though.

@@joshuarudd6297 Its pretty easy when you get into it. To my mind a recirculating reservoir is similar preparing a weeks worth of meals, placing them in a container and scraping the leftovers back into the container after each meal. If you are dumping 21 gals of nutes per week you could run 3 gal a day drain to waste and "waste" the same quantity. The difference is the elemental content of the nutes wont change throughout the week so you know what your plants are getting. Another benefit is you can test the ec and ph of the run off and that will give you an indication of what the plants are doing, if the runoff ec is higher you can see the plants need less ec. You can tell if the plants are taking up nitrate as it will be reflected in the runoff ph .If the run off ph is not what you expect you get an early warning that something is amiss. With a recirculating reservoir you wont be aware until it shows up in the plants, which is typically days after the actual event. If you aware of an issue you can remedy it before it affects the plants. Time lost to issues can add up so the sooner you see the issues, the less impact they have on growth.

The cool thing is that I don’t dump any gallons to waste. My plants drink all 21 gallons because I have several large plants and at least 10 other plants growing in the system at most times. It’s not evaporation because I have humidity sensors and dehumidifier running constantly and its low most of the time. It’s pretty crazy how much plants can drink in a hydroponic system. I’m always surprised.
