eh not really. all brook knew was that roger became a rookie right before he died, which btw means it took roger 14 years to reach the end of the grand line the first time and beat the rocks which is interesting. the only thing we don't know is whether or not the rocks pirates already existed by then or whether or not rocks was a rookie at the same time roger was or after. hell it might even be possible roger and rocks were allies at one point but then broke off to form rival crews. really i can't wait until we get the full roger backstory so we can finally answer all these questions.

I suspect that part of the reason the "Great Age of Piracy" didn't actually result in major shifts at the top is essentially due to the actions of the World Government. This is the period in which they established the Warlord system, enabling them to check the power of the Yonko and place obstacles in the way of new potential supernovas who might otherwise have been able to rise up and challenge the established pirates. Perhaps in a world without the Warlords and without the major marine presence in Paradise, Ace could have built up a larger, more powerful crew and been able to challenge Whitebeard as an equal, rather than attempting to assassinate him and ultimately being folded into his organization. This was also the time when the underground machine that Doflamingo controlled was built, and it took until Luffy and the current set of Supernovas were fairly well established for someone to finally smash that machine, as Law said. If we compare this "third age of pirates" to the previous two, the thing that stands out to me is how *full* it is. There are so many pirates at every level that things just sort of solidify into a hierarchy that can't be broken in a fundamental way - which is why Shanks is able to join the Yonko, but not defeat them. The old powers remain in place because they're simply too entrenched, and there are too many obstacles in the way of those who would unseat them. Once Whitebeard falls, though, things are thrown into chaos - the solid power structure of the third age melts, and suddenly new powers are on the rise. And now, with the elimination of the Warlords, we can safely expect things to come to a full, rolling boil: a war to put Marineford in the shade.

Also before the new age it felt like these powerful figures were just powerful and have big crew, but now pirates are looking for new things, for example : smile devil fruits, new type of weapons like the gas on Zou and the poison rocket on big mom, doflamingo plan with government treasure. They are not actually getting stronger like luffy who just make himself stronger but rather alliances and tools to make them stronger. Old generations like whitebeard and Roger just feel like RAW POWER, while new generation for me feel like this except for a few.

i think the issue with ace is that he was in a bit of a rush to make a name for himself. he had to go through the grand line and rise to the top right away. this led to him challenging whitebeard before he was strong enough. (in fact the novel implied that ace was nowhere near the strongest up and comer to go for whitebeard's head, with the stronger ones being either killed or turned in to the world government). when blackbeard killed thatch, ace was in a rush to avenge him. if ace had idk, waited 10 years or so before challenging whitebeard, I think he would have been strong enough. and i think in the main storyline, if ace had been 3-5 years older, he would have beaten blackbeard. I agree with the rest of what you said though. Although, while it is stated that the purpose of the warlords was to help keep the emperors in check, I think what they actually accomplished was taking out many up and comers early on, before they can truly become a threat. i think people like crocodile, jinbei, hawk eye, kuma and so on eliminated many pirates who had the potential of becoming the next whitebeard or roger, but were simply not powerful enough at the time. same way i think ace would have become a pirate even stronger than roger, had he not gotten into super difficult fights before he was ready, against people like whitebeard, blackbeard, and akainu. in fact, i think that's what whitebeard wanted. he would die in the ace rescue to give his crew a chance to escape marineford, i guess to sabaody to get their ships coated, and then ace would take over as captain and eventually surpass him.

Every pirate they stop, whether by killing/capturing them, breaking up their crew, or recruiting them, is both a pirate knocked out of contention for a Yonko-type slot and a pirate that won't join one of the existing Yonko. Without the Warlord system, what would have happened to Crocodile and Moria after they initially failed in the New World? Crocodile, at least, almost certainly would have rebuilt his crew immediately and re-entered the race to Laugh Tale; that's basically what he did once he lost his Warlord position. It's less clear what Moria would have done, but it's easy to imagine him joining one of the non-Kaido Yonko if that's the easiest path for him, or otherwise doing something more than spending his time in Paradise rendering tons of powerful up-and-comers essentially unable to continue onward.

Nations vs nations, WG (nations + marines) vs revolutionaries, pirates vs marines, pirates vs pirates.

Now let's look at how these different pirate eras are reflected from the opposing force's standpoint. During Both Rocks' and Roger's era, Piracy was still not commonplace and there wasn't a pirate in every corner. People who went into piracy then simply did so as a way of accomplishing their own personal goals: Adventure, Family, World Dominance, etc. On World Dominance Rocks may have been the worst case and so there really wasn't a force readily setup for that scenario to happen. Thus the God Valley incident was an unexpected and most likely isolated event that led to a strong marine gaining infamy. During Roger's Era, with noble pirates like Roger and Whitebeard being at the top of the food chain, the world that the marines needed to guard were in a much more stable place. This is the reason Garp and Sengoku, the old guard of the Roger generation were essentially the type of Marines they were: Noble. Fast forward to Roger's execution and all hell broke loose. All of sudden, people heard the man who had it all, Roger, essentially telling them that they could have it all too as long as they find his treasure. New generations of pirates arose that had the goal of finding One Piece. Whatever the nature of this treasure is, the World Government would stop at nothing for it to remain a secret. Before Roger, no one knew it even existed so the World Government could at least relax. Now that people are actively looking for the very thing they want to hide, the World Government suddenly shifts into panic mode. Hence the CP9 get mobilized. The Ohara massacre happens. People like Lucci and Akainu rise up and the Warlord system gets established. The World Government becomes so eager to quell the influx of pirates that could potentially flip the world on it's head and end their reign. This happens again as soon as Whitebeard dies. All of a sudden, the top pirates of the World consists of a gluttonous monster (Big Mom), a beast that is out to incite world war (Kaido), the only noble adventuring pirate emperor (Shanks), and a power hungry cheater who wants to watch the world burn (Blackbeard). All of them, especially Blackbeard, still having the goal of finding One Piece. How does the World Government and the Marines react? Install their form of Absolute justice at the helm (Akainu), mobilize CP-0, create more weapons that could potentially rival the Emperors (SSG research) and so on and so forth.

I would also say that our current supernovas are starting to change and establish their way. Luffy, kidd and Law seem to be the ones that are still striving for the top and could be the Great pirates of the next generation. Others such as Apoo, Hawkins and X Drake have made themselves subservient towards other groups showing that they don’t have what it takes to make it as great Pirates. Great video Morj, one thing I will say is that I think the difference in expected length of this current “new era” makes sense beyond a story pacing perspective. Unlike the “great pirate age” which was defined by supernovas of the past era coming to power + Shanks joining them as an up-and-comer, the top dogs of this era are people that were already on their way out of their prime for the most part. The roles held by Kaido and Big Mom (and even Shanks to a degree) are sort of power dynamics left over from the previous era, so I think it’s only natural that things will escalate faster, since there’s a huge power vacuum just around the corner

Yeah, I think Roger was already established even during Rock's Era. After Rock's downfall WB the first of the Rocks Pirate to become established followed by Big Mom & Shiki. So during Roger's Era they were Him, WB, Big Mom & Shiki. After Roger's death Shiki also was no longer present. Kaido and Shanks slowly rolled into their own and became the ones to replace those two.

I think its interesting how the average ages of the great pirates seems to be trending towards younger as the eras end and then start. For example the current supernovas are all around 20- 25 or so in age with luffy, law, and kidd being on the fast track to becoming emperor strength, while the other yonko seemed to have been much older when they got their positions at the top

Blackbeard's rise was strange. He is experienced in pirating evidenced by the years spend on whitebeard ship. However his anonymity for the longest time finally led to his rise around the same time as luffy's despite not having a bounty over 100 million

I had the same thought some time ago. I kind of see it like this... Gen 1: Xebec Gen 2: Roger Gen 2.5: Whitebeard Gen 3: Linlin, Kaido Gen 4: Shanks Gen 4.5: Blackbeard Gen 5: Luffy, Kid I consider White- and Blackbeard tweeners. They're both in the Gen above in age, but take some time to catch up in power. In fact, it's almost like Gen 2-3 parallel Gen 4-5.

While I usually like Morj's insight on the story, I think that on this video he misses the mark. The Supernovas were not by any measurement the only strong pirates of the era. They were a group of dangerous individuals that showed up on the same year - and with the events of Marineford and whatever followed on the next 2 years the SW spended training, they became "the worst generation". So you have the Rocks Pirates, who were a fearsome bunch, but with so much internal struggle that they were effective multiple factions under one banner. We have little information about the pirates of this era, but we know that it was the combined forces of Roger & Garp that put an end to this. But WB, Big Mom and Kaido were not the only great pirates - they were the ones who came on top. After Rocks defeat, we had the remaining Rocks, other pirates AND Roger racing for the End of the Grand Line - as we see in Oden's Flashback, Big Mom even had a Road Poneglyph by then. To call that era "Roger's Era" is a misnomer. It was only after he traveled around the world that he became the Pirate King - and the era he started was The Great Pirate Age. Calling out the dreamers to the sea was his final great accomplishment. And what we see in the first half of the story is the end of this era. The vast majority of the pirates we see throughout One Piece are members of this era. From Don Krieg to Moria, they all had someday dreamed of sailing around the world and finding the One Piece. They were enchanted by Roger's plea. That is not the case with the Yonku - with maybe the exception of Shanks. Whitebeard never wanted "the throne". His goals were to protect the ones he cared about, establishing his family, and holding the spot for the one he thought was deserving of the title: Ace. Lilin may have the ambition, but her main goal is to establish the "perfect land" were everyone can see one another eye-to-eye - quite literally. So she spends a lot of time and resources to maintain a hold over her domains. She is everything BUT free, in that regard. And we have Kaido, who is sitting his as on Wano for 2 decades building weapons and an army, for motives that are not yet clear to us. So none of them seems eager to reach the Loadstar Island, or even gathering the Road Poneglyphs. Hell, Big Mom had at least one Mink in her crew, and she never attempted to reach Zou, with is just bonkers! So I think that what the death of Whitebeard symbolize more is the end of stability, the loss of the barriers that stopped the upcoming pirates from reaching Raftel (yeah, I know) and the One Piece. It's anyone's game now. And that is frightening, specially for the World's Government. And if I'm wrong, and those powerful pirates are building their armies for DECADES just to go ahead, then whatever comes AFTER the Yonku must be terrifying!

Great video. Watching It It came into my mind a theory. The New age ends with the death of shanks by the hands of BB (kaidou and big mom were already deafeted). Begins the BB era(or xebecs era p2) with Just one supernova Luffy. This BB era ends with god valey p2. Begins luffy's era (or roger's p2).

Xebec's era (81-101 years old): Xebec, Kong etc. Roger's era (60-80 years old): Linlin, Shiki, Newgate, Roger, Garp, Sengoku etc. Shanks' era (39-59 years old): Shanks, Teach, Sakazuki, Kuzan, Issho, Borsalino, Dragon, Kaido etc. Luffy's era (18-38 years old): Koby, Luffy, Law, Kid, Smoker etc.

The missing piece in this analysis is who has to be defeated by Luffy? In the Rocks and Rogers era there were 1 clear strongest pirate, but in the great age of pirates there were 4 yonkous and they were similar in power. In Marineford Shirohige died, but the other 3 are still there are some ways to view this: -Kurohige becomes king of the pirates and Luffy has to defeat him. -Luffy becomes king before Kurohige. (therefore the new age was never Kurohige's era but rather a transition till Luffy's era) -The other 3 yonkous are defeated and the the worst generetion take their place.

Listening to this, I was thinking: We only know that Roger and Garp teamed up against Rocks, and his crew. Even though White Beard, Kaido, Big Mom, and etc. were not at their prime, I don't doubt they were strong already. What if Roger won not only because he was more powerfull and strongly willed (is that correct?), but also, capable of drawing people to his side, just like our favorite Rubber Boy? And, that's why he started the Great Pirate Age, because he "changed" the mind of the already growing so strong pirates from Rock's Era.

I think the new great pirates of Luffy's era will be Luffy, Law, Kid and possibly Hawkins. The rest will be similar to the rest that fell off and went to Impel down or just were fine where they were in the New World taking a territory or two.
