The books still exist. That’s the great thing about the show. You can’t adapt something from a Book word from word. Especially when the show has limited rights to pull from the books. And the show would lose viewers if it spanned thousands of years like the books. But if people want to learn more they may actually pick up the books.

Lotr lore is the best by far. It makes so much sense because of Tolkiens life long mastery of language, world building, character development, and his morals and values put into his writings. No other lore is as mastered and balanced because it took a lifetime to perfect. I tried to get into Warhammer 40k lore and my gosh it's a tangled up mess and so difficult to follow and understand. I think the books were actually about the corruption of all, even good people when handed ultimate limitless power. Even Gandalf was tempted by the one ring as was Galadriel who both would strive to do good but realised they would be turned by the power into frightful omnipotent beings. Only the meek were resistant to the one ring by any amount of spirit. The Hobbits of good heart like Frodo and Bilbo had any resistance to the ring and even then both were tempted eventually. Absolute power corrupts absolutely no matter how good your intentions.

The second age is the period where Sauron was a pseudo Promethean figure generating religious engineering in Harad and Rhûn with the metallurgical revolution he made in the east and south. He was like Mephistopheles from Goethe's Faust or Azazel from the book of Enoch or Lucifer from Paradise Lost. Galadriel was supposed to be a sage and a political opponent of Annatar's reformist ideas. She used arguments and debates to fight Sauron in the Unfinished Tales version. She was a philosopher-queen archetype. Númenor is a moral and theological story about life vs death vs immortality vs human nature.
@atb26742 ай бұрын
Indeed Numenor deserved its own trilogy/saga of books! It already is a fun case-study in its current form, that a fully developed Second Age would’ve been so rich thematically. First Age would be the most fun out of all 3 ages bc duh dragons, balrog-led armies, elven kingdoms, valar & Maiar. Narratively it’s exciting, But I think the themes there are pretty straightforward, good vs evil, the pitfalls of vengeance, biblical motifs, etc. Second Age is so interesting as a transitory era between two bookends, and as a standalone piece as well. In the whole Lore, it takes the huge climax and resolution of Morgoth’s wars and develops the world in ways that make sense while also showing us exactly where fates were changed by events to eventually converge upon Frodo and Friends starting thousands years back. On its own it takes critical looks into human nature that can make anyone not familiar with Middle Earth ponder about the boundaries between success and greed, fear of death, meaning of death (gift vs curse), importance/gravity of making objects a symbol (white trees, gems, armor, banners, heirlooms, specific alphabets even). And (with much bias admittedly) Third Age is perfect balance of biblical imagery and language with philosophical themes and debates. Yet, I think having seen third age on-screen we would all love the debates on 2nd age a tad more bc the topics touched on in 3rd Age are developed arguments of 2nd age topics. 2nd age-what’s the effects of placing symbolic importance on items? 3rd Age-a positive symbol of Narsil and a negative one, the One Ring, we see what we get from that question. Second age-How should one view death? 3rd Age-rohirrim charge into battle yelling “death” to accept their ruin while doing their duty, literally fighting off death. Versus, Denothor & Boromir’s fear hurting Gondor’s chances. Second age-numenor’s success was not shared and was full of arrogance, when does success sour? 3rd Age-Thorin Oakenshield successfully reclaims the Lonely Mountain but destroys Laketown. He drops his greed in order to win the Battle of the Five Armies, bc success turns to greed when you stop thinking about others but can turn back to success, when done in reverse. So on and so on. All the things we love in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit really form in the Second Age & can see how foundational ideas turn into massive waves down the line.

Matt, would you consider doing a full behind-the-scenes breakdown of your process? I think fans of your channel would eat it up! While we can all see that the overall production value of your final product is consistently very high, what we don’t see is all the hard work that goes into making top tier Tolkien content. It’d be cool to get a step-by-step guide of your process along with a show and tell of the equipment and tools you use: everything from script writing to voice recording to asset management to animation/motion graphics to audio mixing to editing to final upload with thumbnails, descriptions and even managing/replying to comments. Your motion graphics with maps and character tokens used to track their travels are some of my favorite parts of your videos, so even just a breakdown of that alone would be awesome. Never understood how the Three diminished with the destruction of The One, as they were made without Sauron. It begs the question what these "techniques" were that Annatar used in the forging of the Rings that would still connect them to The One. Always made me wonder what magic was woven into them, when Sauron himself learned the craft from the elves?
@ryanwielewski51922 ай бұрын
The Three elven rings were crafted without Sauron being present so they weren't affected as much as the seven and the nine, but they were crafted with Sauron's knowledge and magic which he taught the elves, that's why when the one ring is destroyed the three elven rings lose their power, since the one is the master ring, hope this helps.

It occurs to me that the possible reason even the valar could not take possession of The Ring is because they would have to dominate Sauron's will in the ring in order to be unchanged by it, and this would be tantamount to placing that will in bondage. As such, they would become as Sauron himself, needing to dominate in order to remain in control, and needing control specifically because of The Ring. And so Sauron would eventually have a successor, as this need to dominate grew and expressed itself outside of The Ring. Unmaking The Ring was the only viable option.

I 100% agree with the idea that the rings, all 20 of them, enhance the nature of their bearers. Often to darker ends, save for the Elven three. Even if we know that Sauron never held the ring given to Durin III, its very existence still had a similar effect upon him. Further pressing the idea that the rings themselves, even without the enhancement by Sauron's evil, had a subtle coercive nature.

Still, the Redbeards and the Broadbeams were already in Khazad Dum by then… either some remnants of those clans still survived independently, or Sauron did indeed give three rings to Khazad Dum. “Three he had recovered, and the others the dragons have consumed”, as Gandalf stated… either they were lost in Moria and given back to Sauron by the Orcs, or they were consumed by the dragons in the Grey Mountains.

I was just watching another video, and it made me wonder. Why do you think when Saruman captured Gandalf he didn't take his ring from him? He knew he had it and coveted it, the only explanations I can think of is plot oversight or he didn't have it on him. Maybe he still wanted him on his side and believed he did not need to take it since he wanted the one ring more? Probably just oversight by Tolkien, but I am curious about a lore explanation.
@NerdoftheRings2 ай бұрын
In the books, Saruman has created his own ring. Possibly a matter of hubris and confidence in his own ring - or his faith that he would get the One, at which point the 3 become useless to their owners
@RamblingZhen2 ай бұрын
@@NerdoftheRings Little is said about Saruman's ring, so it is difficult to guess there. Possible though. Saruman definitely was full of pride, that seems to be his primary 'sin'. My guess is that let him keep it to make Gandalf more likely to join him (he was imprisoned and could always seize it later, and his ultimate goal was, as you say, the One. A sacrifice now for a larger goal.). At the same time Sauron coveted the One Ring, but also still wanted the other rings too, his love for the One Ring wouldn't have stopped him from taking the Elven rings as well, though he also was willing to give the Dwarf rings back when it suited his purposes. Saruman could be doing the same. Just an excuse to read the books again and see if I can find an answer I guess. I appreciate the response. Awesome video!
