There have been a great deal of questions about Hughes’ play of late. Some see him as belonging in the echelon of fellow young stars Adam Fox and Cale Makar, while others are not as certain, pointing to defensive liabilities-liabilities which have been greatly exaggerated. Fox and Makar can rush up the ice with peace of mind knowing that their forwards recognize this and cover for them. Hughes cannot. Whether it was a structural problem, a coaching problem, or a player problem is impossible to say, but more often than not, he was hung out to dry in the offensive zone by teammates. How could that not create a complex in a young defenseman?
Is he a defensive stalwart? No, not quite yet. But then, neither was Cale Makar earlier in his career. Quinn’s improvements in positioning and stickwork were self-evident as the season went on. He eliminated some bad habits on his way to becoming a more proficient defender. With his immense skill-set, it would be surprising if he didn’t turn his former weaknesses into strengths.
Speaking of strengths, there are things Hughes does better than even his Norris winning peers. He skates out of trouble as well as or better than Makar. His stretch pass is a thing of beauty; unparalleled. He recovers from mistakes-or the mistakes of his teammates-and gets back into position as well as any defender in the game.
But perhaps his strongest skill is his passing. Elias Pettersson, the Canucks’ star center, has an incredible shot-no doubt-but he isn’t scoring nearly as many goals if Hughes’ passing were off by just a few inches either way. Rarely is that the case. His precision is uncanny, absurd even.
In an unprecedently crowded field full of talented young defensemen, Quinn Hughes, at only 22 years of age, is cementing himself at the forefront of the offensive defenseman revolution. Will he win a Norris trophy as the league’s best defenseman? That remains to be seen, but if you believe it’s outside the realm of possibilities, may I suggest thorough, repeated viewings of ‘The Complete Quinn Hughes.’

He's so slept on. People treat Makar like he's Jesus Christ but don't realise that Hughes is a tweak or two away to being on that level. He can totally put up 90+ points if the offense infront of him decides to break out.

@@Xstrangis Makar has a top 3 offensive unit in the league playing in front of him. Swap in Quinn Hughes on the Colorado PP and he will match Makar's numbers. Guy got 76 in 78 playing for a bottom team.

@@ncucomics287so Quinn lacks talent? Pettersson, JT, Boeser are nothing? Lol. Cmon! Makar won a Conn Smythe already and a Norris. He’s the closest guy we’ve seen to Orr. I think most teams/fans would take Fox then Hughes. The 3 are all insanely talented.

@@HarrisonHollers You notice how Quinn Hughes is leading Norris contention this year and it also happens to be a "coincidence" that the forwards in front of him are all putting up great numbers? Defenseman point totals get boosted by how well the core and depth in front of them plays. That's why a mediocre defenseman like Bouchard puts up 17 pts in 12 playoff games on the Oilers PP. Makar has had monsters like MacKinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog (when there) playing in front of him along with considerably better depth than the Canucks over the years. There is no arguing that, that is why the Avs are champs or contenders each year while the Canucks struggle to make the playoffs. Makar has never played in adversity in the NHL, we need to stop meat riding him, the gap between him and Quinn is so small.
