Cyndaquil, Torkoal, and Fletchling really didn't have bad back stories for Ash. Cyndaquil and Fletchling were caught as wild Pokemon and Torkoal was getting owned by Steel type Pokemon that he was strong against.

Ah yes, they kept to the typical ash behavior of whenever he gains a fire type Pokémon with a tragic backstory. We just never really see it again, or never see it do anything again. Or he just lets it free more or less, erasing all the time spent with them throughout that time as we never see them ever again.
