that MacBook was clearly conceived and designed on the predicate that Intel would deliver on their promises for low power silicon and it was a complete disaster on that front- not even considering the keyboard. I have no doubt this product was why Apple ditched Intel and bringing it back with a more angular industrial design language and competitive price would be a massive success.

I hate the butterfly keyboard; I prefer more traditional chicklet style keyboards. The best was the older keyboards laptops had from the late 1990's until the early 2010's, they were amazing to type on. I would gladly take a thick laptop to get that keyboard style back. I am a fully tactile typer and I don't get anything from the butterfly keyboard because its the key travel.

I scored one of these in an 'untested' ebay auction for under $150. It's a 2017 with the i7 and 16 GB memory and a battery with good life left. It's honestly still very usable. I actually find myself gravitating towards it over my M1 Air for just web browsing and media consumption. The form factor is impressive, and I can very easily just carry it from room to room in one hand without even thinking about it!

Yeesh, to think that even the outdated design 2nd Gen. MacBook Air with those aluminium white bezels at the time is equipped with 720p camera since 2012. Say what you will about Apple SoC advanced ISP but if your sensor is measly no amount of ISP real-time tweak can make that 480p that'll best a 720p sensor. Thank goodness we're getting 1080p camera upgrade moving forward that's long overdue on MacBook's side - even if it's too late in terms of adoption in regards to the iPad and iPhone line.

Luke, let me tell you something interesting. By the way of you saying these are weak. It seems to me the last iterations were not weak. Here's why. I - a die hard fan of this model - have bought one of these in 2019. An 8gb 1.2 Ghz m3. It was like new in a 'Refurbished' branded box clearly from Apple, I didn't buy it from Apple but it was clearly not opened, i opened the box and it had the proper like a new one packiging with the plastic wrap around and the paper protection inbetween. I had another 2017 Macbook 16Gb 1.4 i7 in perfect working order, absolutely no issues which I still use today. The interesting fact is that this new one - the m3, the refurbished one - proved to be, after I done some tests in video editing and processing power tests - about 30-40 % faster. Think about it: weaker specs, a lot greater power. I can stil use it today for almost anything and it does the job. It doesn't stutter at anything. Even heavy processing. It's a lot slower than an m1 but it does the job and I still take pleasure in using it. I take it with me everywhere and it doesn't disappoint. Isn't it interesting that both are branded 2017 but the one with the weaker specs, the refurbished one is a lot faster. I suspect they had continued to improve these up till 2019. And the ones from 2019 - at least mine - is amazing and still very much usable and not weak - even today. Isn't it amazing. I hope they will listen to you and us and put some apple sillicon in these. We the ones who like these will be forever grateful to Apple. They were not just not terible - the later iterations - but also, these are the most beautiful colest slickest model of macbooks ever made. It would be a shame for Apple to give up on these light very portable beautiful Macbooks. Girls especially and us who carry one with us very often will be disappointed. The other models will not be taken as often outside because they are heavier. Even if they are as light as the m2 Macbook Air. Not as light as these. Thanks, All the best.

The MacBook Air M2 is that colorful laptop that never came to be colorful. But it still feels thicker and much larger and is still 35% heavier than the MB12”. So, I still think they should remake this one and with the tapered form factor, cause a squared one will give more volume and thus weight, or maybe not, the M2 Air has in fact more volume than the M1 Air, so they might be able to keep it down!

All things considered, I think this was a bit of a stepping stone to getting where we are today. But for me, it’s not forgotten. Sure, it’s slow as heck for higher end tasks, but for my fiction writing and average daily tasks it’s just so damn portable. I picked up a 512 GB model on the secondary market and don’t even mind the keyboard on a laptop this small and thin. If Apple loaded an M1 chip in there, and upgraded the keyboard, I would be very tempted to buy a new one. But having just bought a 13 inch M1 MacBook Air, will a new 12 inch become superfluous? Once we get M2 chips, maybe at the right price point with an M1 chip installed in the same form factor, I could see the 12 in model making its return and becoming the new budget mini laptop in the same way last years IPhone SE gave people a fairly decent phone at a fraction of the cost of higher end iPhones. Then I could see it becoming a potentially strong seller most people could do some real work on and even trashing those useless budget laptops with older chips at places like Walmart that people keep investing and reinvesting in as their daily drivers.

the Gen 2/Gen 3 Air that went on to sell like a gorillion units in the 2010s was ahead of the MBP until the Retina 13" Pros came out in 2013. For like a good 3 years if you wanted Apple's best 13" computer, with much faster storage, better battery, and a higher-resolution display (1440p vs 1280x800), along with being much much smaller, you got a Macbook Air instead of a Macbook Pro. It quickly became the budget option and then was allowed to lag, but there's no rule that says that Apple has to treat it like a second-class citizen. I'd love to see the MacBook name return and I appreciate the simplicity of MacBook/MacBook Pro and nothing else, but I don't see how the 13" MacBook you decribed differentiates itself enough (unless Apple also makes a 15" version like some have rumored, lol)

I had two of those. I gave the first one to a teacher friend of mine who needed a laptop and still uses it with no problems. And I bought the second one "refurbished" from Amazon but gave it to my niece that needed a laptop for school. That second one had a failing keyboard and it quit working. But the first one (the oldest one) it still very much alive and kicking. Of course, these were not meant for power users.

I think the 12.9 M1 iPad Pro is already enough to replace the purpose of the 12 inch MacBook, it also with a better display, higher refresh rate.12 inch is rather too small for college student

There's no reason for 12" MacBook - Make 13" with small bezels and build it around A13 or A12. This additional inch makes a world of the difference for KEYBOARD.

I was very close to nabbing one, but the price / performance trade off was just too steep. This felt like the future version of my 12” PowerBook, which still stands as my favorite laptop from an emotional perspective.

I'm a bit confused. Is Luke saying that this new "Macbook" would eventually replace the Macbook Air line entirely, or that there would be three different styles of Macbooks (along with the iPad Pro)? Would there be a need for three different models when you have the Air for the basics, the Pro for anything requiring greater capability, and the iPad Pro which can also cover basics plus offer the ability to write or draw on the screen?

From my understanding they tried to use the same CPU's from iphone/ipad in them but was not happy with the performance on macOS on it so seems like they decided to take the design they already made and slap intel based system inside it instead, honestly they should have just waited as the itel chips in this Mac can run too hot at times

Honestly I'd like if they took that chassis, cut the bezels to a ~13 inch screen, added a second port, threw in an M1, and just called it the refreshed MacBook air. Honestly the fact that the "MacBook" was the ludicrously thin one and "air" just meant budget was confusing as all hell. Sure, we know at this point Apple doesn't give a shit what things should be called, but I think it would be easy and make a ton of sense.

Oh man! You're right I guess! Then it also makes sense why the rumors are that this device get colors and a white bezzle. Because the Macbook (except the aluminum 2008, the black one and the 12" Retina) was every time a white colored device. But if this is true I will missing the tapered design but we've to say goodbye to this good old design times for now. Thank you for your hope to get my loved 12" macbook in a little different style back.

I sincerely trust you man. After being Ipad Pro only for three years I bought a 2015 16 gb RAM, SSD 256GB pro from Backmarket and I'm extremely happy. The only issue I have is dealing with things that need to connect with thunderbolt 3. I saw this 12" on backmarket and I almost bought it to travel with, but I thought I'd check with you first so glad I did. I upgraded my SSD to 1TB myself and I'm so happy . Keep making videos thank you so much.

I had 2015 version back in the day. What a beast for office work, small weight, good battery life, made my work so much easier. Unfortunately, died last year and sold for parts. But I really love this form factor. Paired with LG 4K usb-c monitor really pure joy to work. So I was so hyped about the rumours about new 12 inch MacBook on new apple arm chip for 899. Aaaand it didn’t happened. Still waiting a new 12 inch.

I borrowed a 2015 base model 12 inch MacBook from my school for the year and I like the weight of it a lot. It is even lighter than my iPad Pro 10.5 with keyboard cover and pencil, and the form factor made typing better than on an iPad. The performance really suffer but installing Windows 11 does make it somewhat usable for web browsing.

Around 2018ish I remember this was the same price as a pro but worse in every way aside from form factor and both the pro and the "MacBook" were 100 more than the also underpowered air so I got a base pro because the others in comparison felt absurd. Now with M1 the pro feels like the overpriced model, how the turn tables have......

It is exactly the point of my comment on a previous video. I never ever believed even one sec that this new design would be to replace the Macbook Air which just received new design 2 years ago and M1 chips last year, it is not adpated for the Macbook pro family. I remember Apple saying sometime ago that the Macbook was not dead.... The M1 gave them the capacity to reestablish the full family of products: Macbook Air, Macbook and Macbook Pro.

I still think they might bring back the name iBook, but exactly that concept of a thin light consumer based laptop that would be capable enough and have lots of flair… I think it would sell like hot cakes… I’d buy one. the revelation about Apple Silicon was really interesting. I remember reading an article in Bloomberg about Apple’s plan to move away from Intel in 2015… and I was so excited back then, it really would make a ton of sense.

I'm still using the 2017 version. No issues at all and technically the performance is more than enough for me (safari, office suite, affinity suite, light FCP editing). It's a beautiful device, not for hardcore users which is an absolute stupidity if you're one of those and purchased this laptop but it caters towards users like us who really needs an ultra portable device that can get the job done.

Watching this video on my 2016 MacBook 12" which has been my main Mac for the last 5 years. I have it connected to a 4K LG display which it can run at full resolution at 60Hz while also driving its own retina screen at the same time. the naming of it though. I feel like because apple has the "ipad" which is cheaper than the "ipad air" (which is thinner and lighter) they should have the macbook as cheap, colourful and aimed at students and the macbook air with a bit of a redesign as the slightly cheaper alternative to the pro and just lacks the m1x chip. I hope this time they will match the naming scheme to the ipad's one because it could be very confusing for the average consumer.

Yes. Totally agree. Apple should fix the nomenclatures. People have almost forgotten this model. It’s a good time to make it the $750 8/256 LCD sRGB “MacBook se” than make it a MacBook 13” to replace MacBook Pro 13”. Basically like the iPhone SE or 300$ iPad The best fix would probably be $750 : M1 MacBook 12”. 8/256 with sRGB LCD. $1000 : M2 MacBook Air 14”, 8/256 P3 LCD $1300 : M2 MacBook Air 16”, 8/256, P3 miniLED. $1800 : M1X MBP14” (16/512) P3 miniLED with 16c GPU at base price. $2400 : M1X MBP16” (16/512) P3 miniLED with 32cGPU at base price.

@Leave me alone how much better can you make a 1440p screen at 12” which was already dci P3? I don’t see why apple should put a 4K at 12” just cause justify pricing. 12” MacBook should be forgotten as the “premium MacBook Air with worse performance than the MacBook Air and pro” and reintroduced as a budget MacBook with worse specs than MacBook Air for 750$.

I have one. For me, seeing 2021 tech, When they release the next consumer Macbook, with the 13 inch screen in a 12 inch body, and expecially if they do the scolor schemes as the 2021 iMacs, I think they should ditch the AIR in the name and revive it as the Macbook. That M2 chip, the extra ports, and Magsafe will be the game changer.
