I think a more important emphasis should have been put on *why* katanga wanted to secede, and what exactly Lumumba wanted. Namely, that Lumumba wanted to nationalise all the Belgian owned mines and use the mineral wealth of the region to enrich the enture country. Katanga was basically a Belgian puppet state, in place to destabalise Lumumba and not let him take away their precious precious diomands and uranium. Overall though, good vid, and glad you did not go soft on the US, Belgium, and UN

@fenrirr224 жыл бұрын
"Lumumba wanted to nationalise all the Belgian owned mines and use the mineral wealth of the region to enrich the enture country" yeah, certainly. I tell you the reality, when you nationalize the companies mining your mineral riches you do not enrich your country but creating unbelievable corruption, making your country totally dependent on those resources, while halting any progress in terms of education and diversification of economy and in the end you are not even able to mine your own resources after your stolen infrastructure breaks. In the end you will sell your mineral wealth to the Chinese and you are happy because while you successfully ruined your country, but at least you showed your middle finger to the USA and to those dirty capitalist companies who create jobs, pay taxes, create infrastructure and know how. Nationalizing companies is not some heroic act for your people, but a malificent or naiv act which will always go wrong.

@@fenrirr22 The mental gymnastics needed just to say "actually, western companies stealing from poor countries is good"
@fenrirr224 жыл бұрын
@@Bumaroupjotrobru You don't steal you create jobs and infrastructure and pay taxes. Only governments steal from they own people, companies are interested in making value and using highly educated people (where it is needed) and efficent production. African states are not in a bad shape because of the west robbing them, you cannot simply rob a country, you can even create value and good quality life on a barren land without any riches. African countries are poor, because their governments (which are shitty partially due to the west creating countries disregarding religious and ethnic borders) rob them and because of threir abundant resources the warlords and dictators don't need highly educated citizens to create value fro them, it is eaier to get it from mining, but those riches only goes for the people on the top. So yes it is a hundred times better if western companies "steal from poor countries" because they give back far more and more interested in the people working for them, than their own politicians and warlords.
@Bumaroupjotrobru4 жыл бұрын
@@fenrirr22 Bur thats simply not true. The actual value of wealth being exttacted from Acrica is mamy times the wealth invested in it. You avt like warlords and corrupt governments are an issue separate from western companies, when it is a symbiotic relationship. In fantasy land, everything can be solved ny the magical invisible hand of the market, but in the real material world, when you take a real look at material conditions, its quite plain to see that companies have an overwhlemingly and undeniably *bad* influence on african countries. They invest in infrastructure that benefits their exploitation of the resource they wish to extracts, nothing more. They prop up cooperative governments (and get rid of uncooperative ones), usually dictatorships, that pass weak labour and environmental regulations, that allow companies to exploit the local workforce. Billions of dollars is extracted. Handfulls of rice are spent on wages. And the wealth exploited is not invested back into aftican society. It is invested in infrastructure to continue exploitation. It is invested in keeping cooperative governments in power. In short, it is invested in maintaining exploitation. African society does not benefit from this. Africa is loosing out. Its quite incredible that anyone can think otherwise

Constantinos CHRISTODOULAKIS inefficient government, regardless to ideology will have issues. A dictatorship or “communist” government that acts in the interest of the state is better than a failed democracy that cannot provide needs

When lumumba fired the president and the president fired him they both rang up mobuto head of the army at the time and demanded he arrest the other so mobuto decided to do both and arrested both of them. A good book about this crisis is The men who stole Africa which is all about African dictators. Some of the book could be great videos like equatorial Guinea where a politician was arrested for owning a olive which was made in Spain so was sentenced to one of the most feared prisons in the world. Also equatorial Guinea had a private mercenary group try to over throw it but was stopped in Zimbabwe on the flight to the country. Also Gaddafi and his son who wanted to be a professional footballer but once lost a game so called his dad and had the stadium ball doused down.

Another good book is the state of africa which talks about even more UN failings like in Somalia where they want guns blazing (black hawk down was happened here) and lost, and how that then meant when the Rwandan genocide happened they only sent a handful of men who were ordered to nothing as the eternal general was friends with the hutus. Also how France actively added the genocide by trying to cover it up and supplying machetes to the government.

Dude, you need to do a vid on king Leopold in the Congo. Show people that he was a monster and his country brainwashed his country to treat him like a hero. Slaughtered whole tribes over rubber.

I get that it's complicated but would have liked a two parter instead of this oversimplified version. As other comments pointed out this history is not well understood or know by many and there are alot of factions and characters that played a role that you just left out. Maybe you ment this as a pg13 10min intro while the actual story is a rated 21svnlp six hour long trilogy. anywho thanks for the video.

@istoppedcaring62094 жыл бұрын
this is extremely simplified though, i rarely see anyone going into real detail, so here is a few things you should mention most of all the difference between freestate congo and Belgian Congo as for the colonial period and the treatment of the population in these periods respectively as it was vastly different, it is also important to note that both France and GB were orchestrating a lot of the publicity against the very real atrocities (but guess what , they didn't do it that much better, in order to get to claim it for their own afterwards, but then leopold did give in and gave it to the Belgian state, which up to that point had no official role in it was private property of leopold, when they did give it to Belgium immediatly some very revolutionary things happened, most importantly the treasuries were seperated or they immediatly agreed to do that, likely realizing that in the end they might end up having to bail the congo out so better to play it safe......
