Wow. I hadn't thought of that, but you're right. Most people strive their whole lives to make a lasting impression that will outlive them. Conservators strive to make sure that someone else's impression lasts longer AND that their own doesn't.

It's because it's not about them, it's solely about the painting they are restoring. They strive to keep as much of the original piece as possible, and when they retouch it, sometimes even by painting big portions of the piece, they cannot make it permanent, for example if it got damaged, then the next person who restores it can turn the painting completely back to it's original condition and start anew, or just to simply leave it as it was even with the damage, but without any outside interference and retouching. It's not about a lack of ego, but about the respect for the original painting and its artist.

Whilst the Mona Lisa cannot be cleaned due to the way Da Vinci painted it, have a little look at the Prado Mona Lisa, a repaint by one of his students that shows a little better what she would have looked like in her prime. Hope this is helpful!

Basically all of davincis paintings are insanely difficult to clean. The actual last supper he painted is missing half its colour. The one we picture when we think of it is actually a replication. So most museums agree that it's not worth the risk to clean kt

What I like about the internet is that everything can be documented for a possibly infinite amount of time. If someone was going to restore a piece of art in decades if not centuries from now, they could look up either the original artist or the restorer before them to find out how things were intended to look like and watch every process they went through if documented. Information can get lost over time, especially with old paintings, so this could be a great way to save progress.

Is there any way you could do a long video showing just the cleaning, with express 'do not do this at home, I'm not telling you the chemicals for a reason, if you have a work of art you think is dirty contact your local restorer'? ...because I really would love to watch the whole process, even without any talking. Because even though this clearly takes a huge amount of time, the time would soothe my soul. I love your videos, and I understand there will always be a concern that someone is going to ruin a painting. But showing the process (even though you never show how the solvents are made) would be awesome. Make it into ten or twenty minute clips and monitize them all. You'll make money hand over fist. How do we know what is and isn't harmful to a painting after restoration? Have these methods been tested by 100 years of wear and tear? I'm not saying that sarcastically, I'm genuinely curious to find out more info.

As far as what chemicals, pigments, and fillers I assume it was a mixture of chemistry and prior knowledge artists had (I learned the acetone trick when I spilled varnish on a table). The only reason we know what conditions paintings need to be stored in is because during ww2 the French hid historic pieces in salt mines, which are low in humidity. Before that everyone assumed paintings had an "expiration date" because they had been stored in damp castles

A ton of research has been done. And a lot of paintings have been ruined. But the one thing that helped the most was conservators have gotten a ton of new tools to look at what was done to a painting before anyone even touches it. Like x-rays and black light and spectrometers. Being able to identify what is original, right down to the chemical makeup of the pigments, has been invaluable. The other thing is that artists have been known to keep notes on how and what they did which also aids in restoration. If you are a traditional artist, even jotting down in a sketchbook what pigments you used would be a resource to keep your paintings alive for generations to come.

There is a tremendous community of conservators who produce literature on materials and techniques. Lab testing and simulated aging are essential to understanding how a material will last. That said, one of the core principals of conservation is that nothing should be permanent- that is, all of the work a conservator does should be safely reversible so that if it starts to fail or a better technique/material is developed the old work can be undone.

Aliya Shantel The Mona Lisa can’t be restored in a similar fashion to this because it’s a glazed painting. Any attempt at a deep cleaning could potentially destroy the work.

i do believe he would think it should be restored if that were possible-he has said before he thinks wear and tear does not add anything to the painting and takes away from the artist’s original vision :)

Emeline Fromm True, but the Mona Lisa is incredibly unstable and that's why conservators have not tried to restore it as yet. The risk of destroying the painting is too high. I wish it could be restored though.

These videos are addicting. I find myself able to relax more easily, as much from the soothing and meticulous nature of the work as from the comforting knowledge that another work of art has been preserved for future enjoyment.

PLEASE make these longer!! I just found your account today and it's enthralling, I was actually hunting on youtube for hours-long videos of art restoration and happened upon your account by accident but figured I'd give shorter videos a chance. I'm glad I did, but watching the entire process would be the most peaceful thrill.

The last four years there is so much difference in between the videos. It's amazing to see the development and also seen how much more detailed you do the videos now
