Human beings miss the tactile physical experiences that computers have largely replaced. Vinyl records. CRT TVs. Cameras. Pinball machines. If companies continue to ignore the tactile physical experience of their products, these nostalgic items like video games consoles will grow in value.

This whole narrative about consoles going away is about 10-15 years early. Internet infrastructure isn’t there to support widespread streaming. Also, hardware is still moving along at a pace where periodic updates to a physical device will still be needed to keep up with new games. Once things slow down to the point that a gaming PC and a console are virtually the same and streaming can support 4k/60 FPS streaming across the entirety of gamers on top of the current levels of internet traffic across every country that a company wants a presence in, we might see just widespread adoption of a stick at that point.

Unless internet providers turn off data caps (they wont) then consoles arent going anywere. Theres a massive difference in data usage between playing online matches of a game you have on your hardrive and straight up streaming whole ass games. The tech will absolutely be there, but peoples wallets wont.

I’ve been thinking the same thing for the past few years, a Dongle in the tv and a controller, the only thing I hate about this future is I like to have physical games and be able to play offline with Nintendo you have the bonus of being mobile

For someone who just got 20 MB/s internet I hope streaming never becomes the main way of playing. I literally just got streaming 4K video. Couldn't be done a year ago.

For now.. yes! but tomorrow never knows :) Remember when people laughed at those who said the iPod was to be redundant and just a mere short transmission period before when people use their phones for listen to music.. They were right. First gen music phones before iphone (sony ericsson) were horrible for music.

There will not be any consoles in the future.. They will merge into software service platforms like gamepass / steam etc.. MS has been early to adopt this idea, and Sony will undoubtely go the same way. You can use them on a array of devices.. third party platforms, smart phones, PC's smart TV's etc. There is no room or need for single purpose platforms such as consoles. PC gaming is the only thing that will persist, but in different ways.

The ps portal in streaming in house from the ps .... Completely different from streaming from a data center. The latency will be awful with current infrastructure, and will take so much longer for the us to have capabilities for streaming like this, especially as they can pass on the expense of processing onto the user with a console. When you say for technology to get better for the "internet" what do you specifically mean? The main issue for game streaming will not be bandwidth, but latency - the further away you are from the data centre the worse it will be. We are already using light to transfer data, although I'm sure it will be iterated on, it can only go so far. What else is there quicker than light? Tinfoil hat some quantum entanglement.... Game streaming will not take off imo, it's only the gaming industry that needs that latency need globally for everyone. The bandwidth tech is excellent and doesn't really need rethinking while it meets all the current needs.

He kept dipping into the ps portal well so much I was starting to think I might have misunderstood what it did. PSvita and the PSP also could stream from an in house playstation its not a new thing. I would argue the biggest block to streaming games isnt even latency, it is data caps. if you only have so much bandwidth before you have to pay more or get throttled down , streaming is not gonna be high on your list of things.

I bought an XSX and PS5. In 2023 I sold my PS5 because it wasn't worth it. I loved the PS4 ❤ - now that was a great generation.

Been saying this for a while now. The gaming console wars are over in the game in streaming wars are nearly upon us. Been saying this ever since Xbox bought out Activision Blizzard. Activision has four decades worth the games going back before the PlayStation and Xbox I take a probably throw on the Xbox pass. Unless it was a Nintendo exclusive. I think Activision has a few of those under their belts. And of course blizzard doesn't have a lot of titles, but they do have Juggernaut titles.

Hah nah I feel like pc may either be super duper expensive just to run games better then consoles or they won’t get better and also consoles are probably gonna stay under a 1000$ dollars a gen and also if it gets to expensive then they might make the subscriptions more expensive but really its Microsoft’s fault for bringing gamepass and ruining the market 😊

Consoles that innovate will stick around. PlayStation has never innovated hardware. They’ll be gone after next gen pc ports were the beginning of this as there’s 0 reason to own a PlayStation. MS did that last gen and Xbox is already gone. Nintendo is king of consoles because they fail. If you don’t fail you can’t win because you’ll never innovate and if all you are is a box that pays games with a controller PC will always destroy that model. Basically consoles cannot be PCs and have to offer something PCs cannot do. The easiest way to NOT be a pc is to keep physical media, and even better would be to require devs to have the games complete and 100% functional day 1 as no updates should ever be required. That would be a huge benefit over pc. No installing no downloading no updates everything works the second you plug the cart in (Like how things used to be.) Things like that will become innovative again and many will choose that over the current model. New ways to play, new controllers, and new game types would be another way (aka massive risks which Sony and MS will never do.)

I'm pretty sure XBox and Playstation will fall of for PCs at some point, perhaps a console form-factor PC, but I wouldn't bet on that in the first half of the next generation. My guess is PS6 and/or XBox next gen are probably going to see decent sales for 5 or 6 years. But it's likely in 2 or 3 years we'll see a viable PC compatible replacement, and either XBox and PS will become glorified PCs, or they'll fade away. My hyper-expert prediction (not financial advice) is that PS6 will be an overall success, but it's a toss-up if we'll see a PS7. However I'm 85.3% sure we'll see another Nintendo system after Switch 2.
