One thing that personally surprised me in the Wano arc was that despite hunger and starvation being such crucial roles of conflict on the island we didn't really get a single comment about it from Sanji. He had a lot of character development and the whole spotlight in Whole Cake, but it still felt slightly out of character that we didn't really see much of a reaction from him on it, given his relationship with food and hunger. Or then I might've missed a chapter or an episode somewhere?
@pinkcatminht

i fully agree with this. i think a lot of this ended up getting passed onto Zoro instead bc of WCI being so recent timeline-wise, and also the eventual SBS reveal that Wano is his ancestral homeland. i did wish Sanji had like, at least dedicated SOME time to it overall though. it did seem incredibly strange to not even really comment on beyond like, maybe a statement or two.

Amazing video, one minor correction is that Big Mom didn’t have actual hunger pangs in the jail arc where she loses consciousness and goes crazy she was in her right mind the entire time just super hungry, @Parvision ‘s most recent video on big mom contextualizes this amazingly and it makes the amnesia arc a lot less disappointing (although tbh it wasn’t disappointing to me in the first place)

Thanks for bringing that up. There are actually some inaccuracies in this video, ironic since it also critiques the Wano arc, e.g. he is saying we get a reveal that Yasuie was Ushimitsu Kozo, but it was actually Denjiro...Yasuie actually said it himself that he lied about being Ushimitsu Kozo, and we all know he pulled that stunt to attract attention. Why didn't he also say that "we find out that Robin is Ushimitsu Kozo"? lol. I watched Parvision's video as well, and it greatly explains the Big Mom plot...but even before that, I didn't have any issue with the amnesia plot points. For the most part, I feel like some expectations should rightfully be thwarted because they sometimes mess with appreciating great story writing and ideas...the story is still ongoing; like this guy is saying in 59:57, people are gonna look back at the Wano arc in awe of Oda's genius writing and in disbelief of their criticisms.

Epsiode 1015 when kinemon is on the floor crying to Luffy surrounded by the scabbards bodies and says to him that he is entrusting Wano to him. Goosebumps. If he had died there with the other scabbards that would've been top 3 most emotional scenes in One piece. All of that just for him to be alive anyway at the end of wano

His job is to make One Piece content. Of course at best, what he is going to say is that there are "some flaws". They are going to sugarcoat it. As Jay D. Legend said, as One Piece content creators, they are not going to admit what they actually think of the series in these videos. (Saying it as a One Piece content creator himself). Otherwise, the stocks for One Piece would go down the drain and would drastically affect their earnings. But anyone who cares about narrative storytelling can tell how much of a blunder the Wano arc really is. Not even comparing to other stories, but even to just other One Piece arcs.

I'm also probably one of the only people who loved the Big Mom amnesia arc in Wano. These people are human after all, and they have emotions, unpredictable ones. Ones that cause relationships where you wouldn't think a relationship would exist. It served many purposes, including Luffy learning Ryuo, Nami defeating Ulti, BM herself being an absolute menace forcing Kid and Law to show is two of the best awakenings in the series imo, and more. The biggest implication living rent free in my head right now that comes from the BM amnesia arc is Sabo. Big Mom turned on her alliance temporarily because of the pain she felt from Okabure town. The pain led to an unbridled rage that made her take down two tobbi roppo. Now imagine if you had amnesia for 10 years? How much do we truly truly know about Sabo? What type of person is he, and what was he exposed to during his amnesia when he forgot his brothers and the ideals that Ace and Luffy gave him? Food for thought. Plus that scene of her knocking out Page One is one of my favorites. I am also a Big Mom stan! Lmao

What I find interesting is how natural the expectation came that we should get a major flashback for the main villain to build up his personality. I mean, yes, we did get that the arcs directly before that for big mom and Doffy, but there were plenty of villains that did not get a real backstory until a few hundred chapter later, or not at all: Crocodile (still mysterious), Buggy & Arlong (roughly 500-600 chapters later), Enel, Caesar, Lucci (pretty comparable to Kaido in volume of the backstory), Wapol, Foxy (yeah right, sry, I'm kidding with these two :D). I think we're still up for Kaidos backstory though, maybe even with some Vegapunk revelations about lineage factor in the future.

No ammount of mental gymnastics is gonna change the fact that Oda f*cked up with Kaido. It crystal clear that he rushed his backstory and post Wano out of the way so Shanks could appear in time to promote movie Red. He can now introduce Kaidos backstory all he wants, it wont have the same impact since Kaido is no longer relevant as a villain. Among most important OP villains that Luffy faced(Croco, Doffy, Lucci) he is the worst one so far. Truly fall from grace of one of the greatest out there.

Love your analysis. My biggest critique is your analysis of Yamato deciding not to join the straw hats. We were all lead to believe she would join and I get why, especially when she said it over and over. But remember... This was a girl that was chained up at 8 years... Taught to read with the only book being about oden adventures. But she's never even left Kaidos island. Her deciding to explore and learn wano...a country she has never seen or visited is a dope decision to make. To expect her to go from a grain of rice (surviving under kaido as a prisoner) to filet mignon is a big ask. Btw, almost all the characters had a huge arc to get them to join the ship.... Except Robinband somewhat Nami. Luffy always had to fight for his new crewmate or like Jimbei needed some time. She will be a crewmate eventually. If she truly does identify as Oden then wanting to know, Oden, a country she's never seen is natural.

I love a good super complex villain as much as the next guy, but Kaido is perfect and totally understandable as he is. I will be happy to learn more from Rox but I do not feel like there is anything more to understand about him. He was born this way, and through sheer force of will pushed on through life as a flat character ( not in a bad way ). I view him very similarly to Luffy himself, Luffy has always been the same exact person we know him as, not bending or changing to the world, only getting better at fighting against it.

Thank you for this. People spread so much negativity about Wano, but when you put it in perspective like it’s impossible to deny how much good happened during the arc and how impressive some of the events and foreshadowing were. When your trying to balance as many plot threads as Oda was it’s hard to believe the arc turned out as well as it did in the first place and that it was fairly consistent in how entertaining it is chapter to chapter. I think it’s also important to try to appreciate each chapter on its own as something meant to engage and entertain the reader. There are certainly slip-ups when you write a story that way and I think it’s just an inherent aspect of the medium.

Gosh that dichotomy between "godly writing" and "complete disaster" doesn't have to be that way lol. Wano had a lot of very good writing from oda, and yeah it got a bit too bloated for him to tie up all the loose ends. You could call it a mixed bag, but this was my first week-to-week arc and I know for a fact we were all loving it for most of the arc, with only occasional complaints of varying size. I think it suffers a little bit from game-of-thrones-itis, where, because the landing wasn't stuck very well, a lot of people retroactively feel the whole thing is worse than it was. I'd say anyone placing wano in their top 3 arcs is probably a bit.... uh, let's just say they're probably wearing some pretty rosy glasses. But, also, anyone placing wano in their trash tiers probably have some glasses of strong tint as well. It was a good arc. Oda's done better. That's all.

I would be interested to know when you started to read wano week to week, because as someone who read it week to week since it's beginning there were alot of complaints thoughout the arc that only grew with time, people surpressed those complaints because 'it's wano.' Everyone wanted wano to be the best arc so they ignored anything bad and hoped it would improve later. (if people don't believe me, just look at videos after any really bad thing happened like Big Mom's amnesia. every said just wait it's wano Oda has a plan trust in him) It only seemed like people started to hate on wano after it ended because now they knew all there critizism would never be adressed, it would never get better and the most hyped up arc in the series didn't even reach the quality of the average one piece arc, plus the ending also wasn't good so that was just rubbing salt into the wound. People falsely attribute the hate to the raid not failling, but they miss that the reason people pushed for that theory so hard was because it was the only plausible way that many people could think of, for the issues in wano to be fixed and for it to become the best arc.

But Wano also has probably one of the shittiest thing that happened in One Piece (Kinemon death fake out). It's also filled with stuff that I felt "should have been expanded" and stuff that I was like "This again?" (The repetitive panels of background char reaction shots). But from Luffy finally getting to the roof up to the end of Wano is probably one of the time where I felt the most hype as a reader of One Piece since Marineford hence why I think its my 2nd or 3rd fave OP arc.

I think the whole point of kaidos lack luster backstory was to highlight the survival of the fittest mentality the beast pirates encapsulates. Kaido never had the opportunity to be anything but the strongest, it was his only means of survival. Born into a barbarian like culture whos only method of survival was war. The only times he wasn't fighting was when he was sold and experimented on for his only value, his strength. In an attempt to escape this fate he became a pirate. But his prison of strength eventually became a overwhelming tyrany over wano. In his attempt to bring his vision of might is right, he forces his own misfortune upon them. But throughout his fight with luffy we start to see someone who shares many similarities with luffy. A man who fights with freedom, a captain who cultivates strength, a mythical zoan user. The more kaido fights luffy, the more goofy he gets, the wackier his techniques become. Kaido begins respecting luffys strength. The key difference is kaido was liberated through his own strength, but luffy uses his strength to bring liberation. His tenure in the story was to prove that strength isn't enough to change the world, ideals are. People are upset because big mom got a substantial backstory, but whole cake island was a character focused story while wano carried an atmosphere of mythology.

If that was emphasised more, maybe I would agree with you, but it really wasn't. Not to mention the whole "might is right" thing feels flat when you consider he was allied with f*cking Orochi for decades for whatever reason. There's a lot about Kaido's character that feels too contradictory or shallow especially when you consider how much he was hyped up since Marineford.

The fact that yamato stayed behind made perfect sense to me as sad as i am she did not join (i really wanted her to) oda wrote himself into her not being able to join from the moment we met her... it went 99% exactly as i thought it would happen except that i didn't expect she would say she was going to leave even after the war finished... so that last bit where oda tried to faint us into thinking she was joining felt unnatural... Everything Yamato said from the very beginning was that she wanted to accomplish what oden could not... and his greatest regret was not being there for the country in the end... not being unable to reach the one piece at the appropriate time... so at every moment what Oden couldn't do was at the top of the priorities, even compared to the things he DID do... Still that last minute rug pull was weird either way you want to take it...

The crew would become too broken for the stage they're at right now.The beauty of One Piece is that when the Straw Hat crew clashes with the villains of the story , it's always teamwork with Luffy just fighting the strongest opponent with most of the odds against him.Apart from Luffy perhaps only Zoro could be an even match for her , mythical zoans are extremely powerful , be it Luffy's god Nika , Kaido's dragon , Sengoku's Buddha , Marco's Phoenix etc.She may join but later she'll definitely be around the final war , she's too precious to be missing.

Very interesting video! I am not very active in the One Piece community, so I didnt notice how controversial the arc had become after the ending. I personally feel that, when Wano was great (and it was for the whole middle bit) it was one of the best Arcs in One Piece. And even while I understand some of the critzisms on the ending of the arc I still felt like there was a lot of great set up for things to come! Personally, Kaido not getting that much backstory was actually a good thing for me, I enjoyed him being a more 'simple' but incredibly powerfull force for Luffy to overcome. In general I feel the main issue with Odas writing, at times, are the weird changes in pacing that happen againand again, and that sometimes make things feel less satisfying. While the ending of Wano still suffered from that, I feel like the last chapters brought us on the right track again and the new arc that followed is amazing so far!

As an anime only (don’t worry, I was already spoiled), my biggest problem with the arc is the same as my problem for all the most recent arcs: pacing. You know, I stopped watching weekly during Whole Cake Island for about a year, just before Luffy vs Cracker began. When I had got caught up, we were a little after Sanji v Luffy, and it was still the night before the wedding. It’s not so bad when you can binge a complete arc, but watching weekly borders on insufferable. I kind of wish the show had a more traditional, seasonal release schedule.

Pacing at this point is something all long term fan masochisticly enjoyed. I read the tankoubon patiently around once a month release since 2003, up until around Alabasta or Skypea in my local language. Around 2007, I got the scanlations plus I discovered online reader for the English translation up until around Enies Lobby. Ever since then I just resigned myself to giddily enjoying one piece once a week (plus over 10 re-reads up until now) until the day the manga ends, or I meet my premature death, whichever comes first.

Wano managed to make me break one habit i had and i blame this arc because I haven't been able to go back to it: catch up on one piece only every 3 months or so, and from time to time reread the current arc from the beggining. About a year ago the point I was at was the beggining of the raid but some friends kept telling me Oh Wano is just about to end (it was about Sanji vs Queen chapter). The idea that the arc would finish very soon motivated me to catch up and thinking there would be only a few chapters left and from the hype I started reading the new chapter every week. I would go on reddit and see the comments on this new chapter and get excited to read the next chapter. Some moments baffled me like "it seems as oda is a clown playing us but it will probably be developped later on". Yamato joining and then at the last second staying in wano gave a strong feeling like this. But every new chapter we would keep advancing into the final fights, and even after we would learn brand new things about the world. Even now 10 chapters into egghead I can't force myself to wait and i directly go read the latest chapter. Read one piece weekly is fun but it left me angered at Wano. I intend to wait for the anime to completely finish wano to see it. This helped me appreciate whloe cake island arc, as reading it only occasionally i felt lost in all the events in the arc. But once i watched the entire arc in anime in a few days I really appreciated Whole cake. So I hope Wano in anime will give me the same chills and make me love it. Ps: love thriller bark, my favorite arc, but probably beacuse it was the very first arc I ever saw of one piece

Ok i HATE this line of argument. HATE HATE HATE IT. "This character had a moment years ago, so it's fine if they don't have a moment now", don't gimme that rubbish. We want consistent character growth and to get that the characters have an actual presence in the current story. Dressrosa and Usopp's moment was at least half a decade prior to Wano, so that's already a nonsense point. But even regardless, there were ample opportunities to give us relevant character moments that speak to what we cherish about them and it doesn't have to be a fight or anything. There's so much that could've been done with Usopp's new Haki abilities and Oda did nothing with it. Or maybe Usopp gaining new weapons, possibly seastone gear, or maybe establish a deeper connection between him and the Scabbards so the scene where he helps them has more meaning.

The biggest reason that I loved Wano was how Oda wrote out the entire ark to make you despise Kaido and Orochi. He constantly was shifting back and forward from beautiful landscape and happy times (in the anime music) to barren and horrid lands, scaped with scared and starving people (and with generally less happy music in the anime.) He did this whole back and forward thing while telling a congruent story which was his own take on many beloved stories of Japan. Not to mention bringing the whole crew together for the first time since punk hazard which was IMO the biggest draw backs of dressrosa and big mom. In the anime the music was amazing sometimes bringing on (what I like to call) tears of awesomeness. Wano has been my favorite arc in One Piece and am excited to see what happens next.

The problem is Oda presented it in a cheap way instead instead of people organically looking for Luffy as their savior simply because of his display of character and current notoriety. There's some blatant plot holes in this arc. Oden and Yamato... these characters never "existed" before the time-skip, Oda developed both on the fly (a classic example of retcon), for me this is clear. Rayleigh said they never had a person in the Roger's crew who could read the poneglyphs, it is implied they only reached that far because Roger could hear "the voice of all things". Then Oda shows White Beard hesitating, he doesn't want to rescue his brother's family because Kaido is supposed to be a formidable opponent, but he risks everything for Ace? It just doesn't add up, Oden not only had ties with WB, he also he had ties with the Roger pirates, WB could have made a temporary alliance with Shanks to free Wano, that didn't happened because of plot, lol simple as it is. And then we had Yamato, she is not as egregious as Oden (talking about the retcon factor), but Oda shows Ace dying without regrets... how the hell he died in peace knowing his friend was being enslaved? And those are just a couple of really bad moments, there are others (let's not talk about Luffy becoming a Chosen One out of nowhere). I give the benefit of the doubt because Oda is sick, he is writing this story for 20+ years, overworking himself, etc.. but there's some fanatics out there who really assume the guy had a "master plan" for all these years... Obviously not, how can you look at Oden and assume this character is not a retcon? C'mon now

The scene where it’s revealed that Kiku, Kinemon, and Kanjuro survived and Kanjuro created Kazenbo ruined the ending of Wano imo. If Kiku and Kinemon died (along with Izo and AD) that would leave a pretty sizable space in Wano’s defense, making Yamato’s reason for staying feel more natural. Idk why Oda felt the need to make Kazenbo when the island crashing into Wano was already a big enough threat. It’s a narrative decision that i’ll never understand especially bc Kinemon and Kiku don’t do anything post revival

I'm not even through Wano yet (anime only) and its seriously ridiculous that Kanjuro is still around. He's an irredeemable ass who betrayed all his closest friends. How many times do they have to fight him? How many times is he going to appear in Oden's image? The samurai already know he's not Oden and just doing it to mess with them. Kill him, and get on with it. Other than the anime having to pad episode run times to not overtake the manga constantly, this is my only gripe with the arc.

I love that you mention the Story of momotaru and it surely is a reference, but i think you got the coresponding characters wrong. Tama literally has the kibi-kibi no mi, giving her the ability to befriend animals by feeding them kibi - exactly what momotaru does. Monkey - luffy of course. The bird/pheasant is momosuke. The kozuki Clan Symbol is a Bird, and he represents the clan. Not sure of the Type of Bird in the Clan symbol Ever got specified, but in any way it i think it makes much more sence then it being Marco who comparitably played a much smaller role in the arc. Tamas best friend is komachiyo, he is a dog. Asuming momotaru is the Inspiration for the main arc it also makes more sence for tama being a central figure since you can argue, she represents everything the people of wano kuni had to endure but also what they Hope for. ✌️

Interesting thought I had while watching the video. What were the specific words used about the opening of Wano? That Wano must be opened up to the world before Joy Boy arrives, right? Well, when Luffy arrived at Wano he was not yet Joy Boy - next time he comes to Wano, however, he will be arriving as Joy Boy. So when you mention that they will have to return at some point, I think their return must herald the opening of Wano.

I hope that there will be a Wano Kuni Akt 4 & 5 in the future. Where the Strawhats get Yamato on their ship and meet Kaido again. Maybe next time he will talk to Luffy. He tells him something about his past and don't have the wish of suicide anymore because he fought against JoyBoy and was happy after that. Not like an effekt of amnesia or something but more like a 180° turn of his charakter. The greatest death scene I imagine would be if he helps Luffy at the Final War and dies for his daughter in order to protect her from an enemy she can't face off against. So in the end he would try to be a good father just once to help the new era of youngsters to rule the world. It would be so disappointing, if he's really gone from the lore, because I can't imagine the biggest war in all of OP without him taking a major seat in it.

@sammykent5752
@sammykent5752 Жыл бұрын
Dressrosa was the first very long arc and the pacing heavily suffered. Plus moments like the countdown cause people to lose their shit. But immediately after it ended, the consensus turned. WCI went on for much longer than people expected or wanted, especially because BM wasn't getting defeated that arc, nor did people want her to. BM during her "Wedding Cake" phase caused people to lose their shit though. But even then, afterwards I think the consensus was decent? Especially with Luffy Vs Katakuri being called the best fight since Luffy Vs Lucci. Wano was a whole different beast though. I feel like with WCI, even the most cynical OP fans still had optimism. A lot of the complaint was for the arc to end and for us to move on to Wano and OP would be "good again". Not to mention that Wano has been hyped up since we got to the New World and Kaido's been hyped up since MF. So there were A LOT more expectations. And similarly the backlash when these expectations couldn't be met was more harsh.

Oda once clarified before the Wano arc started that. This Arc is an all-Zoan-attributed Arc and he's doing right. actually, Oda did not fail because he still allowed the anti-mainstream style in this anime. even for me the best of this anime is Forshadowing and unexpected secrets that really make the eyes of the audience or readers widen. For example, we know that Luffy's Gomu2 Fruit turned out to be just camouflage for the ancient government to cover up the original figure of the DF, which at first I thought it was a type of "Paramecia" changed to "Zoan Mythology" Hito2 no Mi, Sun God Nika but we can call it the Gear 5th version Luffy who still thinks of Gomu2. but the lattice of the Secret Fruit was slowly revealed because Shanks, an extraordinary character, struggled to win such a DF which was covered by the name Gomu2 no Mi. If it's just rubber, there's no way Luffy can do various rubber manipulations which actually give Luffy Power-up like Zoan. plus Katakuri also feels that DF Luffy also has a unique feature because rubber can do Gear 4th which clearly adds to Luffy's strength. lastly, only Kaido in the manga, he can even realize the uniqueness of Luffy's Paramecia ability when Luffy in Snake-Man Mode says that Rubber Luffy's ability can't possibly do a significant increase in strength like that, even though it looks Paramecia but the increase in strength is more towards the Zoan type. so that's the Foreshadowing which will become the forerunner of Luffy's Mythology Zoan. that's why I really like the One Piece story. I dare say, Oda-Sensei is a real genius at surprising the Reader/Viewers.

I like to think that luffys abilities throughout the series have also pointed toward something like the Nika fruit for along time. I mean just think back to red hawk and I think it was gomu gomu no thor. Luffy using these makes no sense in terms of rubber but make a bit more sense when you think of an unawoken Nika fruit.
@roundcat1992
@roundcat1992 2 жыл бұрын
indeed if the problem is Red Hawk. but it also makes sense when Luffy uses the Gear 2nd heat level combined with Haki so that it causes burning even though it's quite unique, Luffy can also do Fire Fist. when it comes to anyone who can use fire but not from a devil fruit or some Devil Fruit abilities that can emit fire without needing Mera like Ace/Sabo there are several other than Luffy. For example, one of Doflamingo's techniques in Overheat, he can make piles of burning threads and he uses them to whip. sometimes Devil Fruits can do things that are beyond their basic function if we can use those DF powers very well. There is another, Katakuri with Burning Mochi, he makes pops on his wrists and arms to do a Haki-coated and hot Mochi Rocket Punch.
@stagtone1789
@stagtone1789 2 жыл бұрын
@@roundcat1992 huh I never really thought of that. But at least in my mind gomu gomu no thor still makes no sense as do to being rubber Luffy 's body should not be able to support an electric current. I also think this might apply to gear third as it is states that he inflates his bones yet he still has the ability to transfer the air from one bone to another despite the skeleton not being a single solid object. But how would Luffy know that. So I think that a lot of Luffy's pre awoken attacks may be using a small amount of the Nika fruits abilities to kind of fill in where basic biology fails. Giving Luffy just enough room to pull off his attacks.
@roundcat1992
@roundcat1992 2 жыл бұрын
@@stagtone1789 yes, that's a good point of your thinking😁. but which Gomu2 no Thor did you see?. from the main plot, Luffy can bring out Thor against Chin Jao, right? but I always see in manga and rarely in anime. In manga, Luffy only seems to emit a little bit of lightning when it hits Chin Jao's head. but before 2 years when in One Piece Strong World, Luffy really clearly issued a Gomu2 technique that used lightning by inserting his feet in Gear 3rd Condition into Lightning Cloud and naming him Gomu2 no Giant Thor Ax when fighting Gold Shiki. namely, it was Luffy's strongest technique before 2 years of not knowing Haki that caused damage to 1 island. Maybe Nightmare Luffy is also one of the forerunners of Luffy's Devil Fruit ability which will lead to his Gear 5th, to be precise, his Foreshadowing. in my opinion, if Luffy can emit Lightning, it still makes sense, then Luffy is completely immune to Lightning, which makes Enel's eyes widen in disbelief. but want fire or lightning like you said if it's just rubber, there's no way Luffy can do it all. Obviously there is a Secret, which is for sure. The main point is Shanks. there's no way someone as great as Shanks snatched it from the Who's Who and guarded it for some unknown purpose. than Luffy's strength. Right now I'm more suspicious of Shanks' actions, now it's clear that he is the person who keeps the most mysteries, one of which is keeping the Hito2 Sun God Nika Fruit for purposes that are still unclear.🤔
