Immaculata Productions proudly presents 'The CONVERSATION' with Fr. Brendan Kilcoyne and Irish Columnist and Author, John Waters.
The two examine the current state of Catholicism and Irish culture, and ruminate over the 1916 uprising, Pearse, and DeValera. John expresses his struggle and sacrifice through his battle with and conquering alcoholism; what character rock 'n' roll portrays in Christianity and leadership; artificial intelligence and smart cities; the loss of self, and, ultimately, belief in Christ.
"If you're not in contact with God, you're missing the most fundamental part of your structure."

Thank you John for this. I live in the north of Ireland on the border with Co Donegal where my mother and her generations came from and who are buried there . I was born in 1950 and became a teenager in the late 60s. I'm a Catholic and I thank God for my mother who was not overly holy . but she had this great faith in Christ ,almost like a child. I thank God for the convent school I attended and our nuns and teachers. I'm 71 now and thank Christ I can see what is happening in the whole of my country. My children who are in their 40s and late 30s don't want to hear what I am telling them . Co Galway ,Lough Corrib is were my family and I spent so many happy times for many tears until 2020. The lough was my peace with my husband and our family and the wonderful people of Oughterard . I love Ireland and very close to Derry we have the beautiful Inch Island in Co Donegal and the wonderful wild life there where my hubby and I have taken so many photos . I can look out of my garden in Derry and see Inch top,I can see the majestic Muchish mountain. I can see the sunset from Inch Castle on Inch Island when I'm aloud down there. I love my country as do my husband whose English of 50yrs as do my children and grandchildren. It's love John, love of our country and it's unique people, the absolute beauty of our land and the thousands of people who perished and died for us,they rest in our soil . In the past number of years even though I marched for civil rights in Derry and lived through 'The Troubles'and Bloody Sunday,I have not found one party who I could vote for. I voted for Brexit because I know what the E.U. are. I just thank God I have my faith,it's not perfect yet but I am getting their I hope.

A man who has by his own admission overcome his personal demons, and a man with more morals and ethics in one fingernail than the whole cabinet of Leinster house. I hope this man runs for government and while he may not ask for it our small country needs it, and all people like him to run as independents to break the generational curse of this Uniparty System that they hoodwink the nation time and again with in Ireland.

The Catholic Church has never accepted the disastrous role it has played in the negative social impacts in Ireland. The brutal brothers, priests and nuns who made it their duty to mentally and physically abuse their charges. The Churches influence on the political fabric of Ireland in previous times, resulted in corruption and injustice. The Magdalene laundries, the buried newborns, the sexual battery of defenceless children should never be conveniently forgotten.

John made a brilliant point on the need we have to kneel in prayer. My grandfather while dying in the 80s, insisted on trying to kneel on his bed, he was too weak to kneel on the ground. He maintained that if the Queen of Heaven was coming to hear him , he at least had to go on his knees for Her. God bless those that went before us.

John is right. Something needs to change in Ireland because we need our children to know and experience the comfort that comes from God alone. Only He can comfort us on the dark days that can ache our weary hearts..... illness, worry, rejection, bereavement, conflict, etc. Even when you are all alone, you are never alone....He loves you. Money, fame, accolades and popularity are empty treasures that modern society teaches our youth will bring them happiness....but when we suffer the pains of life, (which will come to us all) no joy or protection can come from these things. As you sit alone in your worry and pain, only God can hold you tight. Thanks Immaculata Productions.

Fascinating man John. Massive intelligence . His reference points are unreal, philosophers, poets , writers , rock stars , politicians , scientists , old people in rambling houses and their wisdom and sense of fun and he can weave them all in effortlessly to make a point. David Bowie, Paddy Kavanagh , Dev , Bob Dylan , Pope Benedict, Pearse , Van Morrison. His views on Dev are spot in. The importance of his constitution which I think is all about valuing the human being and a person's integrity and rights. Sadly we are on a road now of tearing it apart . Same with Dev' s speech in 1943. John's description of nursing homes heart breaking as well. Compelling interview all round.

a few random comments from me … he touches subjects here that he is fearful of, subjects that terrify me…crèches, nursing homes, alcoholism, being cast aside, and more when John talks about going around with his father, and stopping in peoples workshops, where he’d sit and listen for long periods of time whilst work stopped whilst the men chatted … It sounds so lovely … I saw some of this too…. Wandering with my dad and also my uncle who is a mechanic and we stopped at workshops of his friends where they sometimes talked for hours, often very late at night … it was quite something Also my grandad was a farmer, and he would go for a ramble some evenings, which meant stopping at a farmhouse here and there for tea and talk … around 1.00 hour … that’s so awfully sad how the teacher isolated a group of people and effectively cast them aside

Brendan is a great interviewer as he lets his guest speak✅ I am the same age as John and I can relate to all he speaks about except he is so much more calm and articulate✅ John is a great witness to the crazy times that have lived through in Ireland and which have destroyed so much of huge value😭 As Solzhenitsyn says Man has forgotten God😭 But it also comes to each person that they will have to face the reality of God✅ God is in charge and all will have to come to know God🙏 We cannot exist even for a moment because God is breathing us and pumping the blood around our body so it’s time to face death because it’s inescapable and unavoidable🙏 Glory to God🙏

A tour de force! And what a brilliant channel! Kudos to both Fr Brendan and John. Three magnificent hours of wide-ranging conversation. Like bumping into good company on a long train ride, time sure goes fast when you're so engrossed. As far as "Irish Catholicism" is concerned, whether we like it or not, we live in a connected world. That doesn't mean that we cannot give our Faith a local dimension. It doesn't mean that we have to play to the tune of the globalists. But, in this day and age, the concept of "Irish" Catholicism is akin to "Cork" or "Kerry" Catholicism a century ago. The Chartres Pilgrimage, which draws young and old from many countries including Ireland, offers a clue to the rebirth of the Faith. It is obvious by now that the "organised church", from the top down, has succumbed to the Forces of Evil. However, there is still a small but sufficient quotient of clergy and lay people who are equipped to carry the torch through these troubled times. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2KbimV4rJllsK8

Popular music as a vehicle to present the sacred: on the one hand, God can use unlikely ways to reach people, to awaken them to the mystery of the Faith. So I suppose he could use the likes of Lennon, although Lennon was explicitly anti Christian, to help bring people to Him, although I can’t listen to him myself. But there is also the simplicity,in a sense, to Christianity…it’s just as Jesus tells us, a concrete reality, present in everyday life, more present in the mundane than an artiste in stage softly praying the Our Father so that everyone can stand in wonder. You know what I’m saying… the mystery itself is in the concrete real simplicity of everyday life. God doesn’t seem to care much for our grandiosity… but I’m not saying there’s no room for poetry, and I recognize the mystery of the Faith along with its concrete simplicity. Both, And… By the way, I love Zach Williams.

Englishness is being lost too, you know how they say British muslims, never English muslims, and the Scots and Welsh would only eschew British, but if we call ourselves English we’re far right, and the ordinary English too are ruled by their rulers, and duped.

Remember with all its faults England is without a doubt the greatest nation mankind ever created, just think about what they gifted to mankind. Now it's all demonized by the enemies of freedom and our way of life even by many of those who flock there from all over world seeking freedom and security.

I watched this both before and after Waters came off with the race-related comment regarding Varadkar. Putting that aside I thought it was a great conversation between people genuinely concerned for the direction of Ireland. There were some salient points made and hard to think back over them to comment on them all, but I was really disappointed with the state of things especially when in reference to the North, or at least Northern Catholics. I understand how we can all be disconnected from our rich history, having been brought up in the North with a lack-lustre religion that went 'folk guitar & Kumbaya', preferring to uproot its marble pulpits and traditional sense of beauty. But to completely renounce our own significance with regard to Irish & European Catholicism? The relationship with Patrick, Colmcille, and Armagh to begin with, tell of something really deep and significant for Ulster Catholicism especially. Have a walk around the abbey in Bangor and you'll find lists of major saints that all went through that space. The abbey itself was a major centre of learning for much of Europe. But I suppose it's par for the course for Ulster Catholics to drop anything that has them at the centre of the narrative or story. Told for decades to turn the other cheek, and not be allowed to aspire, disconnected from the inspiration of the land around them, merely to survive the Troubles and then wake up in a globalised cesspit, only to look to Dublin which has no history of giving the slightest bit of interest about them. How we get beyond this point is by getting more than the story of Christ from the Ulster Church, but an understanding of how we helped form it. That it is of us and our people had something to do in its construction. The Church has dropped the ball here. Irish Catholicism is not merely the Roman Church but with funny English accents. People need to be reconnected to their own history and how they pioneered the Church in Ireland then into Scotland and England before arriving in Europe. It needs that depth! Irish Catholics need only drop over to Belgium and they could start a pilgrimage to all the monasteries and churches that Irish saints began. They even started towns, and are well respected by the devout over there. It's only in Ireland that we are utterly lacking of any knowledge of our own saints. Why does the Church not begin there? With our history, and our contribution? Remind us who we are again! Let us own the Church again and be part of its long history. It's our inheritance and we need to be told that. Engage Irish language, for without it we are just empty English-speaking vessels of any narrative that comes in from overseas, and never in full control of our agency. Here's my best solid advice: 'Dúchas agus Creideamh in Éirinn' by Father Donnchadh Ó Floinn.

Re: Irish Catholicism and the younger generation. They are not being dismissive of an Irish way of doing catholicism, the are suspicious of institutional Irish Catholicism, as overall it can appear weak and wet. Diocesan catholicism is struggling significantly. It has become very administrative. It mostly no longer appears to be working (in terms of evangelization). The new missionary orders ( those here on mission are doing tremendous, inspirational work), but their international influences highlight the universal nature of catholicism, which is good, but may unintentionally provide further suspicion of an Irish version of Catholicism. The young may also be reacting to the harsh puritanical expression of Irish catholicism which lacked joy and gave us a legacy of mother and baby homes etc. I would not worry too much about an Irish way of doing Catholicism. I think it will sort itself out in time. But I do worry that we are a bit too americanised. In recent years I have heard quite a few young Irish catholics sounding a bit too American for my liking. It is not my way (nothing against Americans, but we are not American). But to a younger generation with excess access to social media, it is inevitable. Young intentional catholics have been significantly influenced by a diet of strong charismatic American catholics. But now that we have Fr B on KZbin and a few other decent Irish catholic commentators, things are definitely on the up!

People thinking the same thoughts… see bricks vs stones in Scripture… bricks used to build tower at Babel, Israelites making bricks for Pharoah… humans forced into uniformity… art of conversation is almost lost and I thirst for it. I’m exiled almost.

In relation to Ireland never having achieved Independence, I wonder can any nation or ethnic group that has been so demoralised and even the attempted wiping out of these peoples by others, ever become independent. If we are collectively as an ethnic group so traumatised by our past, that trauma becomes our story, and like the traumatised individual has to make many detours and mistakes before finally (if ever) finding his way home. He comes home as a wreck and wounded, and a shadow of what he should have or could have been. I do believe we can't get there without Christian morals and we won't be what we could have or should have been perhaps...but maybe that's ok...as long as we collectively do our best, in Christ. Can we get back to a time before the attempted colonisations, as far back as before the Viking era, and relearn how we did things then and start from there? Brehan Laws could be re introduced instead of Common Law for example, which is the basis of Western jurisdictions but is based in English Law ergos I believe nobody can be free of colonialism without having their own system of law...no matter how similar to Common Law it is...as Common Law is based on Natural Laws given to us by God. I hope I am making myself understood.
