I took mom back as she is from there. She hadn’t been back for 40 years. We had dinner at the General Lewis Inn. Food was great and we had drinks on the soft sofas in the bar. We stayed in a wonderful cottage in town with NO TV. We didn’t miss it at all. The people there are so kind. Check out Tattered and Torn antique shop. So much fun!!! It was a step back in time for both of us. God Bless All….

Also used to detain Japanese diplomats and don’t forget the government shelter beneath it in case of atomic attack. It has been beautifully restored and there is even an underground gambling casino. They have a world class golfing event, a clinic world renown and even a football practice field for any pro teams that desire to come and use it. My favorite is the concours classic car show in the spring. It’s owned by Jim Justice, the present governor of WV.

I am a native WVirginian and love the state. Regrettably, I presently live in Kentucky due to a teaching position. Even after Virginia separated in 1863, there were still many people in the newly formed state that supported the Confederacy. Lewisburg is ONE of my favorite historic towns along with Harper's Ferry.

Thank you from a fellow West Virginian now living in Pocahontas County. I am often in Lewisburg for Rx’s, doctor visits, shopping, etc. Have family in nearby Alderson and Barger Springs. Of notorious note don’t forget Martha Stewart went to the Federal Women’s Prison in Alderson, WV along with other past convicted criminals of some historical note like Tokyo Rose, and Squeaky Fromme, etc. This area and all over, our state has much colorful history. Bar non for us, Food and Friends is best place in town to eat with Del Sol right up there. F & F is right across from Del Sol. Next to F & F is Corner Market, owned by F & F serving a great luncheon menu. Locals along with the college staff, students, lawyers, "O" students and staff eat there. Up the road about a 1/4 mile is Jim's Drive In. Great burgers. Locals love it. Many upscale boutiques and two great bakeries in town. The corner green space has a small fountain the kids can play in on a hot day. Many locals make good use of it. The old pink house on the right going uphill to cemetery was the old town library now housing the college library. Community college is on your left across from Corner Market. The old house on left is Historical Society Museum. Many nice laid-back things to do in town. The Very Thing is a shop by underpass North of town with antiques, second-hand, and new items of all kinds. Very friendly and reasonably priced. Tattered and Torn has much the same type things, huge layout, a bit pricier. Pantina (?) in town is nice with friendly help, a dog or two to greet you and average prices. There is a new Biergarten in town we have not tried but is on our list this season. So much more to do and see. Come visit us sometime. Y'all are welcome here.

We stay at a sweet little place in town called The Escape that's super convenient for walking to everything, pet friendly, and not crazy expensive. I love the Market on Washington across from the Humble Tomato for breakfast and lunch - fresh, delicious, and friendly. We do a lot of antiquing, and Lewisburg has plenty of great options. Brick House Antiques is wonderful, as is the Very Thing and Tattered and Worn. I haven't been to their mini Carnegie Hall yet, but I will someday!

The Confederate graves are in the shape of a cross. It’s important to look up “The Battle of Lewisburg”. The gravestone in the corner needs a cleaning. I would honor it with a cleaning, but had no way of knowing who to ask for permission. The growth is ruining the stone. So poignant.

Also check out the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park just 45 minutes away in my county Pocahontas. This was a civil war battle as the Union needed to defeat the Confederate army so they could take Lewisburg which was one of the gateways to supply the battles in the west. Gen. Geo. Patton’s ancester grandfather commanded a Confederate group defending this mountain. The Union prevailed after a bloody battle uphill to displace the Confederates. Each year there is a re-enactment of this episode of the war. Quite interesting.

Droop Mountain has some plus there are a few in Green Sulfur who died in a bitter winter, as the rumor went. Plus behind the old courthouse in Putnam County there is a Confederate grave of an officer who fell in the battle at Winfield, WV. His slave attendant could not get him home so a family there, Hogue I think, offered to let him be buried on their property there. Eventually I think his family allowed him to stay there. The locals have since honored his service with some sort of a memorial. I hope the slave that took care of him was honored too. The war took a terrible toll on all sides especially WV where often brother fought brother as there was division here. There are also slaves buried there with stones marked and pointing north, where freedom lay. This is all behind the courthouse in Winfield, WV. If I err in any of this story I welcome correction. As many of us have ancestors who were in this terrible struggle, my great great grandfather and his brother fought for the Union with New York State Co. B 24th Cav. Regiment. Somehow he survived the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Laurel Hill and Cold Harbor. He was a saddle stitcher at the front. I still have his bayonet. He was a shoemaker and skilled with leather thus saddle and harness work came pretty natural. It is significant to note that if you research joint reunions of both sides in this war, the men held no animosity towards each other but only comraderie and respect for each other for those lost and those who survived this war. There is a lesson there.
