5:20 - on the swastika on the Navajo pendant - the swastika symbol is a case of a common geometric image that lots of cultures came up with more or less independently. It's kinda sad one foul political movement blackened it's reputation, so just remember that the design has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years and not every instance of it is because of the Nazi Party.

8:43 Not a card but close. It’s a font plate for an IBM 026 or 029 printing key punch. When a subset (no more than three punches) of the 12 punches in a column are actually being punched, extensions of the punch rods activated are converted to a horizontal and vertical displacement of the font plate, selecting one of 48 (pre-1964) or 64 (post-1964) positions. The plate is then slammed against the mouth of a curved funnel which contains 35 (5 wide and 7 high) stiff wires, which emerge at the other end in a 0.10 inch wide by 0.15 inch high matrix. The selected wires project a small distance and hit the inked ribbon, printing the graphic for the code being punched. The same applies to duplication from the previous card. When a blank is punched or duplicated, the plate doesn’t move at all, and in that position, no dots are selected, no wires are tapped, and no ink is applied.

@@johnopalko5223 Not entirely true- there's a difference between the NAZI Swastika, and the Religious Swastika and Sauwastika. Both religious symbols (still used in many Countries, such as Japan) lay flat, as such- 卐 and 卍. While the NAZI symbol was a Swastika (卐) rotated at a 45 degree angle. Many countries still use the symbol, even with the meaning of the NAZI symbol known. In Japan, the Swastika is used to mark temples on maps, in some places. Until recently, Finland's Air Force still used the Swastika. In fact- it's mostly Western countries that are dropping the Swastika because of Hitler's corrupted symbolism, and even then it is still used in religious settings. I'll just say- one of the saddest things is that people just accept that it's being corrupted. They don't try to fix the use, or re-term the corrupted version... I, for one, never refer to the NAZI symbol as simply a "Swastika", it will always be a "NAZI Swastika", because that is what it is... It isn't the symbol used in religion, it is changed. If we just allow the NAZI Swastika to corrupt the two I pasted above, then we let that small part of the NAZI regime win.
@johnopalko5223
@johnopalko5223 3 жыл бұрын
@@UntrainableWizard You make a very important distinction here between the Swastika and the Hakenkreutz. They are not, never were, and never will be the same symbol. Unfortunately, too many people don't know the difference, so any use of the Swastika (or Sauwastika), at least in Western countries, is viewed with suspicion. I firmly agree with you that avoiding all use of the symbol is, in effect, a win for the Nazis. Unfortunately, I don't see that changing any time soon, as most people would be, at the very least, uncomfortable displaying a Swastika. Thank you for your well-thought-out comment. (EDIT: I should add here that, as a Westerner, I am approaching this from a Western-centric viewpoint. I don't mean to imply that all cultures are reluctant to use this symbol.)

If the building is safe, a signal like this (which changes often) is placed in such a way to be visible outside but not of any worthy notice to someone not in the know. Employees look for it before entering. If it’s not in place by a certain time police are notified. Credit goes to Kalbus, I believe, for all of that.

The fork is a dessert fork, it is made for eating cake you cut the cake with the wider prong and then use the fork to stick into the cake and eat it. It's considered a more polite way to eat cake in higher sociaty.

Very interesting video of odd items but allow me to expand on the pendant shown at 5:16. Prior to the rise of the Nazis in Germany in the 1930s, the swastika was a symbol of prosperity and good fortune used by many native American peoples as well as near eastern cultures such as India. I collect western Americana items ( spurs, chaps, saddles, etc, ) and this symbol was commonplace on these items prior to 1935 but now, thanks to Hitler, it is a symbol of hate and intolerance.

I came in to work one day and, as I was putting my things down at my usual spot, I noticed that someone had carved one into the table.... at an angle. I'm aware of the less offensive meaning in other cultures, but, being Canadian, it just didn't sit well with me at all. One, that's just childish in and of itself. Two, many of my coworkers are Filipino, and a symbol so often associated with racism has no place here. I pointed it out to my supervisor and moved to a different spot since I REALLY didn't want someone thinking I had done it. That table was gone the next day.

How does that Spring Covered Spike set up work if you fall through the ice? Why are there springs? ???
@steeplecab
@steeplecab 3 жыл бұрын
They're not springs, but covered handles. That make them easier to grip in the cold. To use them, grab them in your fist with the spikes pointing down. If you fall into the water, you use them to stick into and be able to grip onto the surrounding ice to pull yourself out of the water. Then get someplace warm FAST!

@@alikaramfaiz8362 well, "Why does this mailbox have" sounds very wrong to me. And even while English isn't my 1e language, I'm pretty sure it needs to be "has" instead of "have". Unless maybe in some rare cases depending on how the sentence continues.
@jenniferrunner3963
@jenniferrunner3963 3 жыл бұрын
@@Robbedem It is "why does this mailbox have" because of the way this type of question is formed in English. Yes, you are correct that "mailbox" is singular so the verb should be too, but the conjugated verb in the question is the word "does" which IS singular. In questions that use the verb "do"/"does" the other verb that follows it ("have" in this case) has to be in the infinitive form regardless of who the subject is. ("Why does this mailbox have..." / "Why do I have..." / "Why do you have..." / "Why does she have..." etc.)
