This is a revelation for me! I have seen this collar style and always wondered how in the world is it staying so upright and graceful? Thank you for this video. I will be trying this style for myself now for sure.

I've had shirts made that were too small to fit my neck intentionally just so that the collar would sit like this. I tend to not wear ties, wear my shirts opened and unbuttoned to the third button. I had (and apparently my previous tailor had) no idea that the cooper collar is actually what I was looking for the entire time. I'll be asking my next tailor about this!

Thanks for this great video, learnt something new. I get all my shirts custom made in Istanbul, Turkey but until now had never heard of the Cooper Collar. When I go to HK, I will make sure to visit Joe and get a few shirts made!

Joe splits his time between Los Angeles and Hong Kong, and goes on an extensive trunk show tour three or four times a year. You could easily catch him in the United States if you're ever here. But you could also see him in Hong Kong. Would just need to confirm to make sure he's in town while you are there. They have a beautiful office in Kowloon.

Great video! Any recommendations for a shirt maker in NYC that would have the knowledge to make a shirt with a Cooper collar?

You have not shown the collar properly. Why show it in a check shirt?

Hum......how formal would you say it is? It seems more like a formal/fancy party shirt.

My tailor made me one of these! It was in style for a short time in the 30s, and he specializes in vintage fashion.

That's great! Yes, I love the Cooper Collar. In Texas (and with three young children), I do not wear ties regularly. The Cooper Collar is perfect for use without a tie, and I love not having to worry about the collar collapsing, which drives me nuts with normal dress shirts when worn without a tie.

Hi Kirby. I am getting some bespoke shirts made next month at Rajawongse in Bangkok. What do you think of men's shirts that have an extra button between the 2nd and 3rd button? I don't often wear a tie with my shirts, but unbuttoning two buttons is a bit too informal for my work environment. Is the "2.5 button" a good solution? Or is it a tacky distraction? Thanks!

Instead of adding buttons, which would definitely change the aesthetic of the shirt, I would instead play with the button stance of the top button (first one under the collar button). The positioning of these buttons can be adjusted to control how much of the shirt opens.

The Hanger Project thanks for this. I would *love* it if you did a video on button stance, and how it effects the lay of the shirt collar. Even with my bespoke shirts, when I wear them open with the 2nd button buttoned there is often a noticeable tugging on the shirt at that point (I have a large upper back and shoulders that even good tailors struggle to accommodate for properly). Perhaps a stance adjustment could address this. Also if you do an episode on shirt buttons, it would be great to get your thoughts on more unusual styles like double (vertical) buttons of the shirt placket, square buttons, contrast threading, number of buttons on the cuff and collar, and related topics.

It looks like how everyone thinks an unbuttoned shirt looks like.
