It's part of the anthology film "O. Henry's Full House" (1952) so your dream's come true. The 1952 version features Marilyn Monroe and the GREAT Charles Laughton.

@@dantean ... And the Laughton / Monroe version has been on KZbin for quite a while now - the last 10 years in fact - so I'm surprised it seems not to have been picked up ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpbQhH15j9yIorc

I remember this playing a lot on HBO back then (or Showtime? cinemax?). But I never watched it all the way through. Thanks for this and (whoever it was that uploaded it) the living film reel horror short film. :)

Better is the "Full House" with Steinbeck as narrator. The Cop and the Anthem with Charles Laughton and Monroe et al is truly much better. IMHO.

Agreed! That was a classic performance by Laughton. What a great actor!!

Strays from O. Henry's tale but adds incidents effectively & in keeping with the spirit of the original. It's a perfectly acceptable version. Morse is no Laughton, who played Soapy in the 1952 movie version, as the former doesn't convey the nobility & poetry of Laughton's down-on-his-luck derelict but he's fine in the role. The main difference, I think, is that Morse seems to be spoofing the character of a vagrant or bum, a little too self-aware of acting the part, whereas Laughton is less showy, more authentically believable. Morse's bum is "on", an extrovert---amusing, yes, & likeable but not, unlike Laughton's Soapy, memorable.

Bobby Morse was so adorable with those facial expressions, and still *is*! My favorite part is where he eats at a fancy restaurant and can't pay for it! Where did you get the dvd/VHS? I've tried to find it, but can't.
