THE CORKSCREW! Vekoma Re-creation! Coaster Spotlight 310

The Corkscrew with bayencurve was a steel rollercoaster type manufactured by Vekoma to a design by Arrow Dynamics. it debuted in 1979 as Super Wirbel in Germany. The most famous in the UK was "The Corkscrew" Located at Alton Towers, Staffordshire from March 1980 to November 2008. It was the park's oldest ride and is considered the greatest factor in promoting the new theme park to the British public. It was one of the first double-inverting coasters in Europe (the first in the UK), so it received much publicity and avid popularity in the 1980s. Waiting times for the ride frequently reached 6-9 hours during the first few months of operation at Alton Towers, and the park would often be forced to close early as it found itself swamped with visitors long before the evening ever came. In October 2008, after 28 years of service, Alton Towers confirmed that the ride was to be dismantled at the end of the 2008 season, to make room for the 2010 attraction TH13TEEN, Code named SW6 (Secret Weapon 6). On 9 November 2008 the park held a special event in honour of the attraction in which the Corkscrew completed the final circuit of its 730 m track. The official date for the last day in regular service was 2 November 2008 - the last day of the season.

Brings back fond memories of riding the Corkscrew at Alton Towers. This was the 1st roller coaster I ever rode back in 2000. I only live a 10 minute drive from Alton Towers so this was a regular ride for me as a teen.

This was my first ever "grown up" coaster I was allowed on. It was also called the corkscrew at a park in the UK called "Flamingo Land" and I have to say this is a fantastic rendition of it, it matches exactly to what I see in my memory

They got one part wrong in the history: the first ever Vekoma Corkscrew with Bayerncurve and coaster in Europe to feature inversions was Tornado at Walibi Belgium, Super Wiebel at Holiday Park in Germany opened a few months afterwards. Also the first drop is too steep. Apart from that, great recreation !

This was my 1st big rollercoaster as a child at alton towers. This ride is sadly missed. TH13TEEN aint a great ride they put on that patch of the park. Original track colour was yellow

Johnny, in the past, you said the only amusement park you've visited is Playland PNE. Well, have you ridden their Corkscrew? If you did, congratulations, you technically *have* ridden this coaster. It's the same track model. ;D

Station was prob raised like that on purpose probably, for a few factors. Alton towers theme park is built on a historical site with a manor n gardens in 1850 so the land is observed as protected land by Staffordshire county council, so they cant build rides above the treelines or seen outside the park so basically all ride get built in pit they tend to dig a fair few feet into the ground to get them drops.
