The conversation about Ninjas reminded me of the reason "all black outfits" became "ninja". It's because in plays, people helping with scenary would wear all-black, as a way of saying "i am not a character". When a Ninja character would surprise do something, this would be represented by one of the stagehands (wearing all black) would take off their mask and show they're actually a part of the show.
