You know what I just realise only a day ago. Emily says Barkis left her for dead, not that he killed her. That means she was still somewhat conscious when he buried her. And if you watch the scene where Victor unknowingly places the ring on her finger, notice how it's sticking out of the ground. She tried to claw her way out of her shallow grave before suffocating from lack of oxygen.

why are people arguing over who deserves who? The story is about learning to let go. Yes, Emily was murdered and that's really tragic, but don't assume that she was unhappy in the end. She moved on. I think that if she had stayed with Victor, she would have never been truly happy. He didn't love her in that way, and she knew it.
@yvonneclark37088 жыл бұрын
exactly i feel that she didn't really love him either but was just filling the void from her last lover which is why when she got revenge and had closure she could let him go and be with his true love
@Laura-bf9xn8 жыл бұрын
I don't know about her trying to replace her former lover. If she was, she would do the same activities, and visit the same place as she did with the other guy. However, we don't get much information about their relationship. So we can't be sure about that. BUT i agree with her not being in love with Victor. I think that rather than being in love with him, she was in love with the idea of BEING in love
@lostcause15928 жыл бұрын
Laura your right about that, she did move on in the end, and she was happy to see Victor happy.... and yes it was really sad to learn that she was murdered but at the end, she was happy..

Not to be rude, but as Emily and Victor were getting "married", she said, and I quote, "I was a bride. My dreams were taken from me. Now I've stolen them from someone else. I love you, Victor. But you're not mine." She then motions for Victor to look at the place Victoria was standing. She set him free from his vows, BECAUSE she loved him. She didn't want his first true love to be lost from him forever, for Elder Gutknecht said "My boy, if you choose this path you may never return to the world above." meaning that he would never be able to see Victoria again. Emily didn't want Victor to be unhappy then regret his unchangeable decision and forever be in misery. She didn't want the same misfortune that happened to her to Victor.

Me too. But, as your an adult now. Do you realize some things in different perspectives? Like, how Victor and Victoria didn't really felt love because that's how just marriage goes at the past? And Emily is only looking for love since she was betrayed before her wedding. Emily wasn't really inlove with Victor, she was inlove with love. There are so many things that you can spot now as an adult. And spotting these is just making me feel sad to just understand the truth.
@Jammythewerewolf8 жыл бұрын
Something I realised about this movie only as an adult is that no one was actually in love with anyone else... With the possible exception of Victor's parents. Victoria's parents didn't like each other, Barkis only wanted money, Emily was 'in love with love' and just wanted to find true love despite not knowing Victor at all and visa versa. And Victor and Victoria didn't know each other either, they just wanted to be together because they could tolerate each other, the match brought benefits for both families and they were afraid of ending up with someone 'worse.' It's realistic for the time it's set, but quite sad.

Personally I loved both Emily and Victoria. I love that both women were characters that I could relate to and root for. Emily knew the right thing to do would be to let Victor go. Mm, I still think Emily and Victor should've gotten together. All she wanted was someone to love, and every time she finds it, it's either by accident, or she's stabbed in the back, both figuratively and literally; it's just sad. At least she got revenge for her murder. And while Victoria isn't as talented or spends as much time with Victor, she at least knows how to sew, she's sweet, polite, and does genuinely like and care for Victor, getting in trouble just to save him. Not to mention she couldn't have been married someone like Lord Barkis, or else she'd suffer the same fate as Emily did.

I really liked Emily's ending. Even though she didn't get Victor in the end, she showed how kind of person she is by *letting him be happy* the reason why Emily turns into butterflies at the end of the movie is because she's at peace knowing that her true love is not stuck in an unhappy marriage, or leading an unhappy life. So, yes, it's sad she didn't get the guy, but the whole theme of the movie is that if you truly love someone, you will sacrifice everything to make them happy, even if that means letting them go
@Daftsy6 жыл бұрын
I like how everyone is like "he should've married Emily!" but I think the exact opposite. In my personal opinion, the ending signified Emily moving on from her heartbreak and her bitterness. She was no longer dwelling on the past, or at least that's what I took it as. It was a beautiful ending, regardless if I wanted Emily and Victor together. (Which I did.)

Both Emily and Victoria are incredibly admirable. They shouldn’t be pitted against each other. Emily was forced to marry, as was Emily. Neither had a choice in their marriage. Emily was a committed wife who wanted to look for her husband and Emily wanted to return to the land of the living because she was stolen from it. Emily is the symbol of acceptance as she realises that the life she too is about to steal belongs to someone else. She knows this, and in turn sets herself free. I love this story so much, especially the music. 🖤

The purple Hamster Well, to be fair, Victoria had no idea about what happened to Emily. She literally just knew that she was undead, kidnapped her soon-to-be husband, and then she witnessed their wedding right before Victor was about to drink the poison. She's not at fault here, Victoria never meant to hurt anybody. Trust me, I wanted them to get married, too, and I wanted to be mad at Victoria, but I just couldn't. She really didn't do anything wrong.

I feel like I'd like Victoria more if she had more of a personality, so I completely ship Victor with Emily because they have more chemistry.
@jjd.71777 жыл бұрын
It's kind of a difficult case with Victor, Victoria, and Emily. Victor and Victoria started building feelings towards each other when they first met, mostly since they were being forced to marry anyway. I saw it like "We're stuck with each other, so let's try to like each other and this might turn out well." But they really didn't have anything in common and most likely would've ended up unhappily married. As for Victor and Emily, their meet up was accidental. But despite the initial fear towards her, they started building feelings at around the time she gave him his dog back as a gift. It went somewhat smoothly, except Victor didn't want to break the promise he had already made with Victoria. It's sad to think that he would've been more reluctant to stay with Emily had he not found out that Victoria was now marrying Lord Barkis, but I feel like with all that they had in common and how he realized that Emily had truly come to love him, they would have ended up together if Emioy were alive or if he had to drink the poison. Maybe this didn't make sense to anyone, I kinda just spilled my thoughts out onto this comment. I hope I made some sort of sense.

When Emily says "My dreams were stolen from me. But now I'm stealing them from someone else" it makes her truly unselfish, which takes so much heart. One thing that makes Emily so memorable is that she is one of the very few undead who don't want to steal others' happiness because she didn't get hers.

once i realized about the resemblance between this victor and frankenweenie's victor i cannot think of one movie without having in mind the other they are just SO alike
@SingMeADisaster8 жыл бұрын
In the Cirnaria archives I know that theory! the theory is that Nightmare before Christmas, Frankenweenie and Corpse Bride all connected as a movie series because Frankenweenie starts off with a young man who I imagine gets married at some point then his wife dies, leaving him a widow which then brings us to Corpse Bride, a tale of a lonely widower who wants to be with his wife again which then brings us to Nightmare before Christmas, a tale about a man named Victor who changed his name to Jack, moved away from home and committed suicide to be with his wife again so he wouldn't feel lonely anymore.
@sylvashtda76818 жыл бұрын
sadly, none of that is actualy true, I had the same ideas, but when I did a bit of research, I foudnd that, NMBC was based of a poem on a wallgreens window poster,f rnaken wienine was just a twist on frankenstien and corpse bride was just that, crpse bride

Too many people acting like Emily and Victoria couldn't be equally good, or saying Victor should've married Emily instead. What I like about Victoria is that she's like a more mature counterpart to Victor and Emily. She is graceful and demure, but she still let herself dream a little at the start of the movie, and she even shows a moderate rebellious streak. She is capable of blending into society and fulfill her traditional role perfectly, but she appreciates Victor's clumsiness and colorful personality (like when he couldn't resist playing the piano while no one was looking). He made her smile just by being himself, and no amount of Barkus's false charm could ever make her happy. From what little we saw of Victoria, she proved herself resourceful and brave (sneaking out in the rain to tell the bishop about the paranormal happenings), shrewd/loyal (she never fell for Barkus and seemed uncomfortable with him, so even if she didn't suspect something "off" about him, his false charms never made her forget about Victor for even a moment), and relatively undaunted by bizarre happenings (despite witnessing everything she did, she never really lost her cool except for when she saw her beloved Victor dragged away by a zombie). We didn't get to see much of her compared to Emily, but she still managed to display everything described above. That's why I wish people would stop hating on her or spamming "Emily was better than Victoria!" She deserved a chance at happiness with Victor, too, especially since he was presumably the first ray of sunshine in her life. Emily got her life, and it seems the only notably bad part of it was being murdered when she tried to elope with Barkis. Both were equally good women, so stop thinking the zombie should have gotten the man at the end just because you liked her best. That negates the whole point of the movie

Emily's death was bittersweet but necessary. She had been hurting for a long time over being jilted, and even she knew that being with Victor was selfish because it wouldn't replace the hurt she had experienced, and was holding him back from his own happiness. The last scene when she dissipates into a thousand butterflies was so hauntingly beautiful because it symbolized her finally finding peace in her world, always makes me tear up

A lot of people don’t get that the point of the story is not to create a love triangle between Emily, Victor, and Victoria. There was never any hate between the women. Victor and Victoria were meant for each other from the beginning, hence why their names are similar. The point of the story is about life, death, love, and grief. Emily lost everything when she died, but she comes to accept her fate and is finally able to pass on. If she had married Victor, she’d still be bound to that strange purgatory.

I'm just going to drop this here. Victor was going to be forced. Victoria was going to be forced too. _Emily wanted anyone who would love her back._ I am honestly saying that it wouldn't be the same if he went with Emily, because though Victor and Victoria's love was fast, and was going to be forced in the long run, Emily just wanted someone who would care. She was desperate for anyone that would come to her grasp and marry her, and though her past is tragic, love just doesn't work like that. I am glad she moved on instead, and learned to let go. It is much more healthy, and much more inspiring. As you can't make anyone love you, it's much better to have them be happy and live for you.

Did anyone go "Oh hell no!" when Victor chose Victoria instead of Emily? The first time I watched this movie when I was around 5-ish. I didn't really understand the deep meaning or the dark twists or even how the ending was sad. Finally, after all these years going through my own pain or listening to others and meeting the dark side of life, I get it. The sadness behind Emily's death, her love for Victor, and the fact she sacrificed her own happiness for Victor. Nativity blocks a lot, but going back to something with a better or grown mind helps you see a lot more
