Thank you for this very clean, easy demonstration on how to replace the hdmi port. You explained each step clearly and hassle free. There are thousands of videos available on how to do this but yours is by far, one of the best examples. For anyone watching, please be sure to use a good quality flux and solder which will give you a solid, clean and reliable result.

Hi. I watched this video 3 times before attempting to change the HDMI port in my nephew's Xbox. I just wanted to say, thank you, and I think I invented an even easier version of your method. I got the old port off and then I could not for the life of me get any of the old solder out of the leg holes. I didn't have your fancy desoldering gun but I did have the plastic one and it didn't do a darn thing. So this is what I did instead. With the board facing up, I put a drop of leaded solder onto each of the 4 leg points, then I pointed my heat gun at the area until I saw them start to melt(a few seconds) then I carefully pushed the new port into place with my other hand(and tweasers). I made sure the pins all looked aligned and Then I turned off the heat gun. That's it. The old solder hardened almost instantly and it all looks just as good as new. No mess. Painless. Took half the time as your method. But thank you for the guidance! I couldn't have done it without this video. I tested the Xbox after and it works like new. I'm so proud!

Excellent, and nice method.. just be really careful to not put too much pressure on the pads when inserting the replacement port when doing this - as the pads are warm (from the melted solder) it might damage them

@TweakTips4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chase - thanks for the comment, and great to hear you are giving the repair a try yourself. Here is a link to the desoldering gun I have used personally myself and it has powerful suction, what is nice about this model is the pump is separate from the gun which means it can be larger and in turn more powerful - amzn.to/3nVQKwV If you prefer a cheaper option, you can just try to use desoldering wick and a manual desolder pump - amzn.to/37bWjBB with this you will be able to place the copper wick over the pads and heat with your soldering iron and it will remove most of the solder (without the need for the desoldering gun). Key for the desolder wick is to use lots of flux so the solder is pulled onto the wick. Hope that helps.

Excellent job, the only addition to the method shown would be to use IPA in between using the irons and gun. This cleans the excess flux (as most are rosin based) to keep the area clean. Since there is small components near the pad areas and using a heat gun; kapton tape is inexpensive and a huge repair tool when soldering surface mount areas. You remind me of manufacturing techniques on repair stations. GREAT JOB!

Actually, while this method obviously worked, it made it harder than it has to be. I suggest buying some solder wick. It’s a copper braid with flux built in. Start from the back side (opposite side of the port) lay the wick across the solder points and heat it with the iron, the heat will pull the solder into the wick and allow the ports legs to be pulled out from the other side. Solder wick is a solderer best friend. Do not over heat the printed circuit board as it can damage other components as well as weaken the board. Good luck!

@TweakTips4 жыл бұрын
@@johny1220 It is tricky for sure - my top tip is a thin soldering iron tip, on a soldering iron which is at least 100w. Typically the thinner the tip, the less heat it holds, so it is better to have a higher wattage soldering iron when using a thin tip. Also, always add lots of flux when using a thicker tip and this will help to stop the bridges

Hi - Great to hear you are tinkering.. that's how I got started as few year back. It is best to add a little solder to the legs of the new HDMI port before installing - this will always help. Just try not to add too much so you do not get any solder bridges.

It is actually really easy! After you get the old port off, as shown in this video, don't even worry about removing all the old solder, it seemed impossible for me, so I just put a drop of leaded solder onto each mount point, let it cool, heat up the area with the heat gun for a few seconds until you see the solder melt again, then with your tweasers holding the new port in your other hand, gently lower it down into it's position and press into place carefully, making sure the pins are aligned and it looks fairly level in comparison to the port next to it. Hold it in place and turn off the heat gun and you're literally done. No cleaning up or trying to suck up messy solder. No fancy equipment or desoldering mechanism needed. You can do it!

I'm a girl and I did it. This was my second time ever soldering anything. Just be brave! It's not rocket science 😍

I can never remove the older solder, it pisses me off why is it so hard to remove???? I have solderwick good flux, and leaded solder, but i can never remove the old I always daamge the board,
@TweakTips3 жыл бұрын
It certainly can be tricky.. I struggle sometimes too. I have found that, as long as you have the board on a flat surface, press the iron with more pressure on the wick (without moving it!!) can help draw up the solder to the wick... just do NOT move the soldering iron if you are putting more pressure on the wick.

Wondering what I'm doing wrong. No matter how long I heat it with the gun, the port wont budge. How long should it take?
@TweakTips3 жыл бұрын
Make sure you have added unleaded solder first of all and use lots of flux.. should take 3 or 4 minutes at 480 degrees.

You will need to use jumper wire to reconnect the pins of the HDMI port to the correct place on the motherboard
