I recently revisited M2TW and it has genuinely aged so well. It's not the most complex or historically accurate or graphically impressive, but damn, nothing beats pulling off a heroic victory against impossible odds or restoring Rome as the Byzantines.

Fun Crusade exploit: The turn before the city is taken, have as many generals as you can join the crusade. The next turn, assuming the crusade is successful, every unit/general will receive experience and some generals may get permanent buffs to their skills or retinue. I think you also get money based on how many units join, but I don't know how that calculation works.

There's a time limit to joining crusades so you cant do this 50% of the time.

Oh I know what happened with the Danish. The AI gives attack orders and then doesn't change them when diplomatic statuses change. What i remember doing is plonking a single trash unit one tile outside so the path would get interrupted and new orders given, to save them form their own stupidity.

Haven't played unmodded Medieval II in a while, but I will say I still think it looks better than the updated Rome Remastered. It's the most fun I have in total war games and is the first game I ever bought on steam. Still weird to me that the game that took me a real life week to download back in 2012 has never had a sequel despite it being almost 20 years later.
