Dr. Suman Sahai delivers a compelling and highly effective message about the failures of modern science in her TEDx presentation. That less than three thousand of us have noticed this talk is part of the problem. For comparison, in nearly the same amount of time Justin Timberlake has received more than _one billion_ views of his song from the movie _Trolls._ We live in a world that has made a catchy tune a bigger priority than our own health and education.

Science is incorruptible. Scientists are people and they can be corrupted. That is it.

Seemingly, valorous charities and activist groups, that receive millions of dollars in donations, are often self-interested groups that sponsor and influence research to favor the narratives that fuel their funding.

It's not just the Asbestos industry, but the multitude of societal institutions that depended on the use of asbestos all help explain how corruption becomes systemic. The asbestos industry pabdered to academia as you've mentioned. But they also convinced city planners, construction companies, and, to lower construction costs, that enabled and expedited urban sprawl and also the people's dependence on government and related corporations to build housing, buildings and every sort of infrastructure that a city or town needed. Where people once built houses off their own lands or through localised initiatives, they now ceded control to governments and the corporations that tendered for projects. Because large scale plans always ensures larger profit margins, the asbestos industry could justify their deeds with a counterargument of working for the greater good which was city planning and housing the masses. Yup, we have successfully created our own problems by blindly believing in the ideal that governments take care of their people, instead of profit which is needed to run those societies. So in an industry like science, where technology developed in the fields are meant to focus on improving the conditions of society, it is a matter of who's vision of society that you are working towards. And it's most likely going to be that of the people who fund you. And btw, the importance of city planning and such construction is a concept that was exported around the world to become a hallmark of a country's progress. Yup, it's an Imperialist standard that requires the participants to employ the strategies that the colonial masters had employed in their own homelands in Europe and also US. Gotta love globalisation and that ever consistent pricing despite economies of scale :) Then again, what's (the) business (of enforcing a unilaterally decided standard to which the masses have to agree with or face economic repercussions) without profit right?
