Today's education system has become more corrupt as students become less interested in learning. The countless unjustified decisions many schools make do not reflect the morals and teaching that students are minded of on a daily basis. Ginger Thomas has been at Seabury Hall since 6th grade. She is now a sophomore and began playing on the school's golf team as a freshman. She enjoys going to the beach, spending time with friends and simply just playing board games. Her favorite subject often changes throughout the years but as of now it would be math and spanish. She is not the most outgoing person which is why she wanted to join TEDx to expand her speaking horizons as she finds this important for a future career path. Her speech regarding issues in today's education system hopes to inform students and adults to realize the power of change in a justified format. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Hey as a student, can teachers like not fail or dock marks simply because they don't agree with the students beliefs or sentiment?

That depends on the sentiment and the subject. If your answer is scientifically wrong or unsupported by research, then you will not do well. If your adressing english class and you recieved poor marks on an essay, simply ask your teacher if there is a time you can come in and get some feedback on why your essay was marked down. You can recieve poor grades on work for a variety of reasons

Here's the actual corruption in the educational system: School cater to the students like a customer. So, the school pressures the teach to give higher marks/grades. The reality is that each student is different and have different levels of interest in the subjects with different learning abilities. There is a curriculum with a lot of subject material that needs to be covered, so the weaker students can't keep up. If you slow down the pace, the stronger students will complain. The school or principal pressures the teachers to pass everybody. Exams are made by the same school, and marked by the same school, so the incentive is for the school to inflate the student grades so the school looks good. Schools are obsessed with the number of offers from Universities the student is accepted in, and the only way to ensure that is to inflate the grades. Students graduate the corrupt high school (sometimes with very good grades) but fail University because the school-did not prepare the student for the real difficult subjects, just makes the students/parents feel good. Solution: exams must be made and marked by a different entity - NOT THE SCHOOL

As soon as kids see that the whole purpose of the public education system is not to educate but babysit, kids won’t complain why they not learning. What academic institution lets their students, tell their teacher what grade they have to give them? The public education system does. Parents tells teachers what grade they have to give their child. Just like taking a class from professors, you don’t tell the professor what grade they have to give you. That’s why the public education system is not about educating, holding students to academic excellence and responsibility but babysitting for parents. Kids should not complain why they not learning anything of value. This is why.

yeah but its not the teachers fault. Your strongarmed into giving lazy students better grades than they deserve by principles because they are scared of the kids parents. You are not allowed to dicilpline kids in any way. So kids treat it like a joke and all our good teachers quit, or are having breakdowns because the school system does not allow them any authority over thier classroom.

Look at the money-making jobs in society- Rock Stars/Football , etc. - that's what most students respect and care about in this money- making obsessed society.

Easy for Arts subjects but Science subjects are real academic subjects. Weak students take Art, smart students take science.

You know that a lot of schools require you to take an arts credit to go to local colleges right?

So you think the arts aren't "academic". What makes something a real "academic subject"? Is something a REAL academic subject because it requires rigorous study? Is something a REAL academic subject because it is taught in higher education? Is something a REAL academic subject because it's something you can use to make money? Is something a REAL academic subject because it has the power to influence general society? Arts classes in many places are a joke sadly, but art in and of itself meets all four of those requirements. You enjoy and are influenced by artwork everyday, your clothes, furnature, interior design, television entertainment, animation, table clothes, wrapping paper, lampshade, and every product you ever buy, is created by artists and designers. Alot of things we dont think of as "art" required artistic skills to design, everything from the mug you drink your coffee, to your trip to the museum, is touched by those with artistic hands. Our corporate empires depend on the branding skills of creatives in order to continue to sell the prodects you use everyday. The arts are valuable and all around us everyday. Almost everything you see in the world made by humans begins its life as a drawing, or mockup or tiny sculpture. And whill skills vary, you can't observe things like Bernini's sculptures, and know the man did not devote his entire life to the work.

@@gussfish8670 Yes, corruption in academics these days is really bad. This is what happens when schools become a business. Grade inflation is out of control and schools pressure teachers to inflate the grades or make the exams easy or retake exams until they get the grade they want. The best way mitigate this sort of corruption is to have a separate and independent examination and marking entity like the British GCSE. Universities too are suspect. What guarantees grades are true? Money corrupts everybody.

@@JessicaMessicaTV Art is a talent and it is subjective - not an academic subject. Indeed there is a place for art and it is useful. There are specialized schools for art and that's where it belongs - not Universities. Since Universities became so political and leftist leaning, there are no Isaac Newtons and no Einsteins - just tree-huggers and "Climate Change" propagandists / activists coming out of them now.
