The Corsairs and Haradrim are men of the South who wage war on Gondor throughout Tolkien’s works. They are the people who have succumb to tyranny and corruption, but might they be saved from that course after the War of the Ring? Thank you all so much for watching, please let me know your thoughts about the video in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

One of my fav things from Jackson's movies was the art design for the Easterling armour. I normally am never interested in humans in fantasy but have grown to find the Haradrim and Easterlings of Tolkien uber fascinating, mostly thanks to the amazing artistic representation of them in the films. Having more scenes with the Easterlings especially would have made the third movie way more interesting.

Reptilian Reflections I rather they are kept more secret and left to imagination, we can on,y imagine what it was like battling against that enriched golden armour with the razor sharp blades atop their spears. As for the harad rim I am glad they were shown in a fairly small snippet with the mumakil in the battle of pelanor fields. I am intrigued in the history of the mumakil and how they came about to capture these Fearsome beasts, only leaves you to think how powerful and skilled they are, mastering the craft to hunt with long spears and blunt, hard hitting swords. The weapon choice of the harad rim alone is very unique and cool, I feel it limits their potential as certain weapons aren’t as powerful or sharp as those of the rohorim let’s say, however it leaves a very cool and again unique design, which gives a nice image of what their homeland would of looked like.

Slow Moe they aren’t COMPLETELY different people, dude. They come from a similar background, have a similar history and relation with Sauron aswell as they end in the same relation with Sauron, allies starting as potentially enemies of Sauron. What’s more they are both quite secretive compared to other factions/kingdoms?

A good presentation, as ever. Sam's view of "war between Men" always struck me as one of the most morally nuanced scenes in the trilogy; it makes the reader confront the consequences of war at a very personal level. And given that Sam is shown to be very insightful throughout the books, I think he was at least partly right in his brief but thoughtful speculation about how that particular Man of Harad came to be there.

wright534 Given what we know about Tolkien’s military service; that sequence has always sounded to me like a small but honest depiction of his own reaction upon personally seeing death and war up close. To me it’s always resonated as a very chilling message and warning.

Not really. He was expressing empathy to a dead body whose face he couldn't even see (that was apparently too much for Peter Jackson who did decide to show the dead Pakistani's face). In ROTK, Tolkien made it clear that the nonwhite humans fought for Sauron entirely because they were evil.

@@sumanadasawijayapala5372 Dude; the whole point of the scene is to humanize the Haradrim and provide more insight into the concept of war. Since Orcs/Goblins are literally demons in the lore there isn't much sympathy the reader can give to them, but humans who were allied with Sauron on the other hand were just people who happened o be born on the wrong side of history. Do you think every single soldier that fought for Hitler was a born psychopath who loved murdering civilians? It seems highly unlikely. Men can fight for an evil causes because their culture forces them to, even if they themselves were not rotten at heart. This was likely a conclusion Tolkien himself came to during his time on the front lines; and he expressed that through this scene.
@sumanadasawijayapala5372
@sumanadasawijayapala5372 4 жыл бұрын
@@guyofminimalimportance7 I don't see how Sam seeing a faceless corpse humanizes the Haradrim. We don't really learn anything about them. Sam merely guesses whether the dead Pakistani was forced to fight for Sauron. Tolkien makes clear in the next book that the Haradrim fight for Sauron because they hate white people: "But the Men of Rhûn and of Harad, Easterling and Southron, saw the ruin of their war *and the great majesty and glory of the Captains of the West.* And those that were deepest and longest in evil servitude, hating the West, and yet were men proud and bold, in their turn now gathered themselves for a last stand of desperate battle. But the most part fled eastward as they could; and some cast their weapons down and sued for mercy."

The quote used to open this video is one of the greatest views of war ever published. It has stuck in my head since the first time I read it more than 40 years ago. In short: Individual soldiers are almost never responsible for the events that lead them into a kill or be killed situation. All most can hope to do is survive and help their comrades survive. Everything else is just politics. I would also like to tell a personal story. I'll try to keep it short. Dad served as a navigator in a B-17 in WW2. He served very early when the U.S. was just working up their strength and he flew three missions over occupied France. He was wounded on the third and, as he pointed out many times, that hunk of shrapnel in his arm saved his life because he was the only member of his nine crew squadron (90 men) to survive the war. He had recovered from the wound and infection and was on his way to train with the 509th composite group, the outfit that dropped the A-bombs on Japan, when he contracted TB and he missed the rest of the war. He considered that to be a fortunate event as well because, had he not contracted TB, he might have been one of those responsible for delivering an A-bomb. Dad was a gentle soul if there ever was one and the guilt of killing so many people would, I think, have killed him too. But? Let's fast forward a few years. I'll try to keep it short. Dad's best friend while I was growing up was "Uncle Klaus". Uncle Klaus had served as a fighter pilot for the Luftwaffe. They met at MIT after the war and it was pretty cool to see a guy, my Dad, who was tasked to bomb Germany sharing a deep friendship with Klaus, who was tasked with trying to kill my Dad! Many of my best childhood memories come from going hunting and fishing with Dad and Uncle Klaus. They were a right of passage in many ways but the thing that still sticks with me is that people who were once set up to kill each other can find mutual respect and, ultimately, true friendship. And then there's one instance that really stood out and still stands out today. Dad and Uncle Klaus were engaged in a business deal with Mr. Abe from Japan. So? Dad and Klaus invited him on a fishing trip and I got to go along! Mr. Abe was in flight training with the Japanese Air Force when the war ended. Dad was in training to drop A-bombs on Japan when the war ended. Uncle Klaus was in a British POW camp when the war ended. And I, as a mere child, was granted the golden opportunity of witnessing their camaraderie as simple soldiers who just happened to be from different countries. Ain't life grand?

Whenever evil is mentioned in this series I say to myself, “Morgoth is the true enemy. It was from him that evil came and was able to influence mortals.” But even Morgoth had his start in good. I love that message in Tolkien’s work. It’s a dim hope but hope none the less.

Actually some of Tolkien's letters indicate that not all the Haradrim and Easterlings fought for Sauron and actually resisted him in their own ways, that no people fought entirely for or against the Dark Lord. Likely tied into the actions of the Blue Wizards in the East. And that the those actions caused forces that would have been sent west to stay behind to deal with them, lessening the forces that threatened Gondor and helping the Free Peoples win the War, even if it was ultimately in small ways.

Elves aren't a linguistically nor culturally homogenous group the only elves who had contact with Easterlings were the Feanorian branch of Noldor Elves who gave Easterlings landed titles. The Easterlings betrayed the Noldor elves in the battle of unnumbered tears when Ulfang the accursed switched sides killing the loyal Easterling chief Bor and his entire family. This along with the fact that their betrayal eventually led to the complete and utter destruction of Beleriand at the hands of the Valar made the two groups despise each other greatly. Elves know nothing about the Haradrim the language barrier present makes communication near impossible not to mention that by the third age both Easterlings and Haradrim worship Melkor.

We are one people. I think this is the greatest significance of the discoveries we have made in genetics in the last few decades. It's no longer a matter of speculation - we now can take actual tissue samples from peoples of the world and we can demonstrate this ultimate kinship. We all sprang from the same fountain of life. It's really even bigger than that - ALL LIVING THINGS ON EARTH sprang from one fountain - right down to bacteria. But the significance of it at the level of homo sapiens is really quite profound. We are diverse and have walked many different paths through the world, and there are many things in that to celebrate and rejoice in. But we are also the same - we are all cousins.

Love Snyder’s visuals, I just thoroughly dislike the portrayal of history. Any connection to hellanistic culture, birthplace of democracy or at least a rough draft of it are displayed as angelic and good. Then they play the underdog thing but sort of not considering Leonidas never misses a chance to run the underdog down. Everyone loves to stick it to an empire yet Sparta attempted to do the same with Greece while the rest were busy trying to conquer the world. Damn it Frank!

2:43 seems more like an Easterling and not Haradrim I guess, as others have pointed out. I find the helmet, clothes, and armor of the Easterlings very similar to that of 'Shredder' from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Although in fan fiction and illustrations their colour scheme is more gold and red, in the movies however their colours are very very similar to that of Shredder's. A quick google image search comparison should show this quite nicely. Also perhaps both Shredder's armor and that of the Easterlings are somehow historically inspired by ancient Japanese (rising sun-furthest east) Samurai warriors. Focus if you will on the helmet design for each and pay close attention to the horn-like protrusions, which are typical for Samurai Helmets. Also the way the back of the helmets all have the same outward flowing design, whether cloth or metal. Fascinating indeed.

Abs Abs I would argue that Tolkien based Haradrim on middle-eastern people especially Carthagians/Phoenicians. Strong naval nation who used elephants in war. Their name Haradrim is also very middle-eastern sounding with ha and im.

I think the term Corsair likely defines the group of people from Umbar that sailed from there to fight against Gondor from the sea. The word Corsair is synonymous with Pirate. the Umbar(ens, ites, ers?) are the people from Umbar, and their Corsairs are those that took to the sea to fight their enemies in naval or amphibious warfare. In much the same way, people form the Norse countries around the time of about 800 to 1100 AD that raided populations across Europe were called Vikings. A person from one of those countries was a Dane, Swede, or Norwegian. Corsair, like Viking, is a profession, not an ethnicity or race.

So here’s food for thought; were the Mumakil ever used in wars against other nations besides Pelannor Fields? Why don’t we hear about it in any history of ME? And how did the hobbits know of the Oliphaunts to write them in poems and stories?

If I may be so bold as to ask, do you write your own scripts for your videos? I only ask because of your mention of the Hobbits sharing Haradrim blood, or having similar origins. Have you looked further into this subject? I love your videos, and cant wait to see more content coming from you!

This was very interesting, I've always been intrigued by the men of Harad, I do find it sad that they were all evil, as they seem to have a very interesting culture that could've been more explored. On that note, do you think you could do a "what if the Haradrim had fought with the free peoples" theory video?

I feel like the LotR world could have a lot of game of thrones like politics and conflicts between the realms of men if that was what Tolkien was interested in writing.

Hi! I have a question if someone has the time... You know what cultures exactly inspired him to create the corsairs and haradrim? Besides the general idea of arabic and african cultures? Or is it that simple?
@sirmonkeys422
@sirmonkeys422 7 жыл бұрын
Eleonor Alvarez the corsairs are given a unique history. They may be based on Barbary coast slavers, but they come from black Númenóreans, and they seem to have mixed with the haradrim over the years. The haradrim seem to be divided into two groups: The closer haradrim, which goes from the border with gondor to slightly beyond Umbar. This land is a desert, save for a few rivers, and the culture seems to be based on carthage and Arabs (to me; this is of course my opinion, since to be completely honest comparing these cultures to real life counterparts is wholly inaccurate as Tolkien hated allegory) . Then there is Far harad, which goes from where the desert ends all the way to the southern tip of the continent. Far harad is essentially sub Saharan Africa, and therefore is too large and diverse to be likened to one culture. Tolkien hasn't written much at all about it.

The Corsairs have their origin in Moroccan and Northwest African pirates that raided the South of England at times in the Renaissance and later. Europeans had taken to paying tribute to them to prevent raids & piracy. The U.S. engaged in the Barbary Wars in the first two decades of the 19th Century against them. Starting in the 1830s, the French started to colonize North Africa. This ended bloodily in the later 1950s.
