In Ukrainian culture, to cross the Danube means to die. It is not the real river. It is mythical. If you drink water from the Danube, it means to forget. There's many Ukrainian folk love songs which has the mythical Danube. The reason for this is because it's a fight between cossacks and turks. The Danube being the last frontier. And Ukrainian girls getting sold to slavery and sent to the Sultan to get raped.

I can't stop playing this on my Bose Revolve Sound Link! This song is addicting or maybe I was a Cossack in a previous life! This version is much more authentic than the one performed by the Red Army Choir, which is not bad either but in the present version the Ukrainian words are better pronounced and the atmosphere is absolutely fantastic! @@corvusrex7995 I have absolutely no problem with that. In fact I am an admirer of the Red Army Choir. In August of 2019 I hosted a party at my home on the occasion of my retirement. I sang along Leonid Kharitonov and the Red Army Choir the beautiful song of the Volga Boatmen. Somehow my baritone voice managed to make a good impression along the formidable bass-baritone voice of Kharitonov, heard through my Bosse Revolve Sound Link. It was a huge surprise for my guests who did not know I can sing and that from grade 4 to grade 11 I studied Russian. It might be of some interest to you that I was born very close to the Corvin Castle from Hunedoara, Romania. The building of this castle was initiated in 1446 by Ioannes Corvinus (Ioan Corvin de Hunedoara), who was voivode of Transylvania and regent of Hungary. And yes Corvus Rex, his son Matthias Corvinus was indeed King (Rex) of Hungary. Thanks for your reply.

@@scepticsquirrel these are Slavic suffixes meaning "son of". Similar suffixes also exist in Russian, Belarusian and Polish. For example in Russian and Belarusian a suffix "onok" denotes an animal kid, so "kukushka" is a cuckoo bird, and "kukushonok" is a chick of this bird. And in Polish they also form surnames by adding an ending like "czak" or "czyk" for example Kowal - smith, Kowalczyk/Kowalczak - smith's son.

If we say Cossack is russian/ukrainian warrior-rider, how come he rides a horse near Danube witch is like, 2h by plane from Ukraine and in those times and by roads you needed maybe months to ride this distance. :D Sounds like forgotten history where Serbian soldiers moved up north (today Ukraine) to fight Tatars with Russians. After Austro-Hungarian empire decided to take back privileges from Serbian warriors defending its border with Osman empire, they decided to move in Russian empire, stay Orthodox Christians and keep warriors privileges fighting wars. This is the only logical explanation since Danube was place where Serbians used to live and defend territories and 'now he is taking black horse' to ride north into another war. Later on, those Serbians settled in today's Doneck and Lugansk (war zone in Ukraine). If you know genetics, you can recognize those today's Russians there by the head shape or even by today's last names they have. :D And in Ukraine, in Serbian U-kraina litterally means 'In landskape' ^^

Dusan Ivkovic it’s not actually singing about the Danube. In Ukraine, “to cross the Danube” was a metaphor for dying, or a way of saying that someone has passed on. The song isn’t actually saying “The Kozaks rode to the Danube River” it’s saying “The Kozaks rode to their deaths in war” as the lyrics are a conversation between a Kozak and his wife/lover. Also Ukraine borders the Danube delta, it’s a well known river that everyone in Europe knew about, and the Ukrainian Kozaks did go south of it at many times through out history

It may have some (10%) words like in Russian, but that doesn't mean it is Russian :) It have different letters and different culture.
