You definitely can find a cheaper homes. It’s over 60,000 homes vacant in Merida. My house is 3bd 3bath in a Privada $450USD and you can still find affordable food/ Restaurants.

I live in playa del Carmen, it's just as hot as Merida. But there's beaches here. You need air condition there, it's a must. But have to do it wisely, because if use too much energy, you can get penalized and have an expensive electric bill. I buy a land an hour away from Merida, close to Santa Clara. Much cheaper, definitely need a car there, and I have a car. To rent in Merida, it's like 4 deposit, first month rent, then two other deposit and the notary that is almost the same price. That's why I can't rent in Merida. But yes, it's very safe there.

Thank so much for mentioning the bug issue. I’m considering moving to Mexico and watched many videos and no one else mentioned the roaches. I currently have been living in Jamaica for 2 years now and no matter what I do the roaches keep getting in. They’re such a problem I’m considering relocating but if they’re in Mexico too why bother?

Where in Jamaica do you live? Try some ants powder in the little green sachets. Sprinkle the powder in the corners and around drains, windows and door ways

Not all of Mexico is as hot, humid, buggy and expensive as Merida is. Do some more research. I am able to live and eat like a Rey (King) on a budget of less than $1200us per month where there no bugs and no a/c needed and my electric bill has never been over $10.00us. Could I spend more? Of course I could! I didn't rent the place a block from the beach, I rented the one less than a mile away for half the price and a better view. Could I eat at an exclusive restaurant a couple times a week at over $100us per pop and shop for American products at American chain stores? Yes, but I shop where the locals shop and buy the Mexican made option of the same things for a lot less and I'm good with eating great street food tacos for around $1.00us each...I surfed late this afternoon and on my walk home I picked up four al pastor tacos con todo for dinner and it cost me $2.77us! I cook most of meals at home. If you only have a certain amount of money coming in each month don't plan a budget where you spend all of it. You should watch some of Mariana's videos at "Mexico Relocation Guide" Watch the one about a guys budget who moved to Atlixco. BTW-I save and invest almost as much as I spend every month. Buena suerte!

I'm just kinda confused tho. You eat at the local restaurants, do you ask where they source their produce etc? Bc it just seems racist a bit to not buy local food and say it's bc xyz yet you eat from the local overpriced restaurants who probably buy from the same local vendors..... This is why gentrification is a serious issue, this type of stuff.
