This is Council Tools premium Wood-Craft Pack Axe... it is meant to be packed so the handles are short (19" and 24")... traditionally a 2 1/4 lbs. Boy's Axe was hung on a 28" handle... and some like to use 24 " handles for their Boy's Axes... and house axes have an even shorter handle... since the the head weight on the Pack Axe is 2 lbs. going longer on the handle would make it seem to light for the length...most axe heads are proportional to the length of the handle...as you gain in weight you gain in length... there are exceptions to this rule of thumb when dealing with task specific axes that are set up for the needs of the user. There will be other axes released in this new line of Wood-craft... so stay tuned... Peace, Rooster

Well, we'll just have to take back the internet one axe video at a time...eh? :) Actually there are many places on the internet, including some axe related channels that talk about the axe as a tool....I think David does a good job of showing the functionality of all the axes that he owns and uses...and just like many fans of axes, he sees the beauty in the form which is related to the function... he doesn't use axes that aren't useful..... but out of respect for David, this is not really a forum for lengthy discussion, and we shouldn't hijack the comment section to discuss the overall axe market, the lack of basic and common knowledge that has been lost in a generation or two, or anything else not directly related to his video... too much to consider and discuss here....agreed? Peace, Rooster

Hello Dave, just contacted Self Reliance Outfitters and spoke to a gentleman and they said the do have discounts for the Military, Fire Fighters, and Law Enforcement. So as soon I return to the states from conducting 6 months of training here in Germany and Poland I will order this axe from them. And will recommend them to anyone instead of Council tools since they seem not to appreciate what we do for the USA even though there product is made in the USA. Thank you Dave - Sgt A

Thanks for the review Dave, I'm still banging my head against the wall deciding to get the Council Tool -Woodcraft or the Gransfors Bruks small forest axe ! AUGGGGH!! Thank you for watching, Jeff! You are exactly right...there are good and bad reviews on all types of gear I have never used a GB, however, I fully support Council Tool. Made in the USA, excellent product and a company full of nice people. Maybe you could start by checking out the CT Boy's axe? At a more budget price, it will give you a good idea of what Council Tool has to offer. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by, my friend and please keep me posted! -Dave

The orientation on the bottom IS as important, because it shows the overall orientation of the grain inside the handle. Also there are alot of runoff's along the length if that handle, runoff's increase the likelihood of split handles.

Greetings from British Columbia. Those cheek cut outs look cool, I am not sure how effective they are, as you probably know, many older models of axe have convexing from the top to the bottom of the blade (not just from the edge to the haft). This is reputed to be a method of preventing an axe sticking because there is a much smaller area of contact during the splitting process. I have used axes with a variety of wedge thicknesses and grind angles that don't stick, but require a shallower chopping angle when cutting across the grain. The 24" hafted 2lbs axe is becoming a benchmark for 'Bushcraft' / or 'Woodcraft' as Dave Canterbury prefers (perhaps a challenge to the revered Ray Mears of 'Bushcraft' fame in the UK :)

Say Heah Dave, Thanx You, I got the Council 24" Wood Craft Axe with the Heavy Duty Sheath and Sling and you helped. But we got lucky with the weather for this weekend. We drove on snowy roads but its going to really warm up. But regardless, I took my G.B. Small Forest Axe instead. All though my 24" Pack Axe served me well last winter. I also brought my Bacho Laplander since I have two Bacho's, I almost brought my Wicked Tough Saw, but I changed my mind. But I'm also excited about my knives because I'll have a chance to see how good my Frost Mora 840 Clipper will perform with my Fox Bushcraft Parang, This is the second time my Bushcraft Parang was at this location. Once in a wonderland of Snow, now in milder weather, Its wet and some remembererence of snow, but its alot warmer. So I brought my lighter Axe. I really think I put together another good set. But thinking about my Frost Mora Clipper, I really feel its found a nice home complimenting the other tools, But in my Solo Scouts, I really feel my 3V Master Hunter is what I'll use with my Fox Bushcraft Parang, Because I can still very easily add my Vic. or even my C.S. Black Rhino Slipjoint with the Tri-Ad lockback Folder although I like fix blades more than folders. Again Thanx You for your help that helped me get my 24" Council Pack Axe.,,.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and sub, my friend! It's great to have you here, Tim! I think you will absolutely love this axe - one of my favorites! I haven't seen the price go down either, however, it's well worth the price (which is still less expensive than several non-USA made high-end axes)! Let me know how you like it, Tim! -Dave

Say Heah Dave, Even with my Maxpedition Kodiak Gearsling, I could still use my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the Heavy Suty Sheath and Sling, But so far I've been using my G. B. Small Forest Axe, because it fits great in a Axe Holster made by our friend Eugene. But also as much as I like my Wicked Tough Saw I prefer to go with my bigger Silky Bigboy2000 with sheath. But I change alot like the weather, It just depends, and the weather has alot to do with it. On cold snowy days, I still use my carbon blades, But on wetter days, I go with stainless. Like my Arvensis 119 and my Bokor Coye Ridgeback or my Fallkniven A-1 with my Cold Steel Mini Pendleton, The Saw's and Axe are the ones I use regardless. Yes, My 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe is one of my Fav's, Thanx to you. Oh, I also added a few more to my Google Plus just search Paulie 4X and tell me what you think Ok. ,, .

Say Heah Dave, Infact I taking my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the Heavy Duty Sheath and Sling, and my new concoctions, my Arvensis 119 and my Bokor Coye Ridgeback I put together, I'also taking my Silky Bigboy2000 with sheath. I'm also taking a 3Day Backpack, I just want to see how cumbersome everything will be. The weather calls for rain, So only three of us will brave the elements, If it was snow, I would of taken my Piggyback system with my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4, I'm sure my Victorinox Delemont Collection Ranger 78 would of worked, But I'm pretty happy how my concoction came out. Starting a fire with wet wood should be a good practice, But we won't be too far from the cabin, so if it gets too bad to watch my beloved Dawg'z, I don't drink, But my friends say they can't watch football without some Paul'ies Girl, heh heh heh, The knives I'm taking are both stainless steel, So this will be more of a experiment to see how much gear I could handle comfortably. One More Game, Go Tribe. ,, .

Say Heah David, WoW, This is my next Axe. I'm also getting the heavier mask and harness, Thanx for sharing it. But everytime I'm ready to pull the trigger, I get side trackrd, I just got my new Battle Horse Attitude done My Way, and thought Ok, now the Axe, But Busse Combat came out with the Ergo Battle Mistress in the INFI Steel and I just had to get it because they sell out really fast and when they sell out, you don't know when it will be made again or never. Now I have a three knife set, Oh, I have others, but besides my Green American Flag Cerakote ASH-1, all are none coated, My Badger Attack Ergo, Steel Heart Ergo and now my Ergo Battle Mistress are coated and a beautiful match. But yeah, It's on my wanna, wanna, list.

Say Heah Dave, Yeah, I kind of made the 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe as my go to cold weather Axe. I can use many cutting tool combinations, Piggyback or single carry with a neck knife, Like one of my Fav. Modified Rodent 6 or my Fallkniven A-1 with my Mora 510 or any of my neck knives, Oh, that Piggyback I made with my Bokor Black Rold and the Mora Classic #1 I had a lapel pin gold tone with Three Flags, The American, Ukrainian and Canadian Flags given as a token on a special convention, We'll I pinned it into my Classic #1 and gorilla glued it on, It looks great. But I've been using my Maxpedition Kodiak Sling, It's perfect to carry alot of gear that I can use to stay comfortable on a overnighter if I lets say I run out of daylight, and it's very cold when I do what I enjoy doing the most and that's scouting new area's. Today, I took my Benchmade Arvensis 119 Piggybacked with my Bokor Coye Ridgeback, I horizontal carried it along with my Silky Bigboy2000 with sheath. I also had a weapon, a small auto as a detergent. and a Canteen, I could also bring a cooking kit. Yeah, I practice this to see what works and what doesn't work, Weight seems to be a problem, So I exchanged my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4 and replaced the Rodent 4 with my Rodent 3 and made another Piggyback with my Rodent 9 and the Rodent 4, I figured out that I can carry my Piggyback's in my Maxpedition Kodiak Sling until I need to wear them in a Baldric Carry. It's seems to work great then. The Kodiak Sling is big, almost as big as a 2-3Day Backpack. So now it's part of my gear when I Scout. But that lapel medallion looks very nice, It had a pin and I tact it in that hole on the Classic #1 handle with a little gorilla glue is all I needed, It's in there very secure and looks great. Surprisingly that Piggyback with my Bokor Black Rold and the Classic #1 is very lite. I also can molle attach my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet to the Kodiak Sling, so taking a cooking set is easy. Ofcource I can use many combination's. But one needs to practice, so they can figure out what they can handle, No sense leaving gear behind in a survival situation. I just wanted to share this with you, especially tacing that gold plated medallion to the handle of my Mora Classic #1. I think even a plain tac would look better, the target cross with that hole on the end of the handle is to center the wood in a lathe when they make the handle, so I just pimped it up to cover that. Talk to you soon, Partner, Ok, Laterz. ,, .

136 bucks! For that price a Hults Bruk "Kisa" would be my choice. You can't beat hultafors aka Husqvarna when considering value (price/utility). Does it look "cool" yes is it worth 136? Not for me. I have a hatchet from Council but I hardly ever use it I always find that my Silky Ono hatchet ends up in my hands instead. You gotta love Japanese steel :)

While it's pretty I think I'll stick with the hand forged brands. It looks well hung but if, as you say, the handle has heartwood in it, that is not a quality handle. Second growth hickory only please. It's pretty but not premium.

Justin Ammerman while I'm not defending CT axes as they do use alot of poor quality handles in some of their axe lines, I've seen GB's & other hand forged axes that also had less than premium handles. Then again, I've seen budget axes that had some of the best hickory handles that's hung in an these days. Truthfully however, for as much as most people these days are going to use any axe while out playing "bushcraft" & "survival", very few will ever break even those "less than premium" handles. Another fact is, that most all handles, even premium ones, that companies use nowdays are way to thick & bulky & don't have enough "flex" in 'em. True, old time lumberjacks & wood cutters would laugh in discust at how thick & lunky handles, even the "premium" ones, are made these days. But, apparently, these days, the ideal has became a thicker handle is a stronger handle, and that simply isn't true. And while, for an axe that trully gets used on a day in day out basis, with alot of sweat equity swinging put behind it, handle grain can be a factor, but it's equally important that a handle also be "thin" enough to flex & absorb shock. All I hear on KZbin from axe reviewers, is the importance of good "grain orientation", good "grain orientation", good "grain orientation", over & over & over & over, with never a mention of why a handle needs to be able to flex, If most of the KZbin "millennial" axe reviewers could go back in time to when men WORKED clearing forrest & harvesting timber by axe & not just PLAYING bushcraft to make KZbin videos, those old time guys would laugh these "millennials" right out of the forrest!

This one seems a bit "Trendy" to me, as I have never come across one single vintage axe that looks anything like it. I am far more interested in Council Tools Velvicut and FSS Boys axes as they are built to US Forest Service specs... And they do have a high centerline per US Forest Service specs to minimize sticking, just as the vintage axes do. I do have three vintage axes with the "Phantom Bevels" (A Mann, Plumb, and a Kelly made Pow-R-Kraft) but from my understanding those Phantom Bevels were simply a marketing gimmick. I have zero doubt that these new Council axes are made of excellent steel, but I am far too conservative to be one of the first to try these out... I will let others try them for a couple years before taking them seriously.
@HighCarbonSteelLove

+WisconsinEric I can appreciate that, my friend. I am never one to jump on the "latest and greatest" either. So far, so good with this one. I have a full forest review coming soon and we will see what it's got. Those are a couple of excellent axes you mentioned. I plan on owning each of them someday. The Velvicuts are things of beauty! I have heard differing opinions on phantom bevels. I think if they were tremendously effective or made that big of a difference, you would see them on all axe designs. They are very beautiful, though. I can understand being conservative, as well. Thank you for watching! -Dave

HighCarbonSteel Love The Council Velvicut and FSS boys axes are the only brand new axes on the market that interest me... I sold/traded both my Gransfors and my full size 32" Wetterlings over a year ago and do I not regret it. I do like my 26" Wetterlings though, and will likely hold on to that one for a bit(pun intended). It does have a slightly high centerline, unlike the completely flat Gransfors. I do reserve the right to change my mind on this new Council offering though... I have been wrong in the past, and I am sure to be wrong in the future ;) I will be looking forward to your forest review, and there have been a bunch of BCUSA guys including Rooster reviewing them on that forum too.
@WisconsinEric

HighCarbonSteel Love I don't know if you are in contact with Council or not, but I believe they should bring more high end Velvicuts to the market. I believe a Velvicut 2.5lb double bit cruiser would be a Huge Hit, and a Velvicut spec version of that hatchet you reviewed would make for a killer tool as well. Currently no manufacture offers a Cruiser, and the supply of vintage cruisers is very limited, and they are expensive. I traded my vintage Collins Cruiser for snowshoes last year, and I really miss how that thing swung... But sadly the steel sucked. A Council Velvicut Cruiser would be much better.

HighCarbonSteel Love The market is Begging for it, and it amazes me Council has not put it out yet... I finally mentioned it on BCUSA after biting my tongue on the subject since this "Woodcraft" axe came out. Rooster replied that it would likely happen. PS. I took a marketing class in middle school, and we has a class competition. My group crushed the competition with my idea and we sold out of all goods right away. At 12yrs old I was completely board with marketing, and I lost all interest. 25yrs later I still have zero interest in marketing, but I am seeing failure all around me where there could and should be success. Tent manufactures are currently going out of their way to fail as well. Council better step their game up before Wetterlings brings a 2.5lb cruiser to the market.
