Yeah, It's becoming one of my Fav's, The new Ochsenkopf Axe because of the little longer haft and I think a little heavier head, You can put your hip into it a little bit better being able to feel a little better, But the over all picture, Carving, Bush Crafting, Yeah the 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the heavy duty sheath and sling is Aces. Last weekend I brought out some cold weather knives out of the box, Knowing we were going to pig out and watch our Brownies win, I luv my Dawgs, But, maybe next year, Heah, How many Browns does it take to win the Super Bowl, , , We'll never know (heh heh heh) Anyhow, I took out my O. K. C Ranger T. F. I. I Work Sharp ed it and now I just strop it. Anyhow it's a 5 1/4" blade and a 1%4" thick, The knife is handle heavy making it very lite in hand, The balance is just behind my index finger, Yeah, It's defenetly not a good chopper like let's say my BK-2, and my Ranger Afghan that are similar in size, But the T. F. I. is more slender and I swear a great bush craft knife for its thickness, I always liked longer blades. I never hesitated baton chopping with it and it's lite in hand so you can carve with it, Making a hart board and spindle is a since for it which is a great surviving ability knife, When I first bought it, It sold as a Bush Craft/Survival Knife, I see you can still get it for $69.00, I team it with my Gen2 SP-53, Aces, The two really complement each other, Aces. Usually with my cold weather, I almost always take atleast a Hatchet, Especially when I'm scouting or on a day hike. I also got a Leather Holster from Eugene our freind, I also brought out my G. B. Small Forest Axe and of course I've already used my Hultafors Bruks 17 Agdor Hatchet which is the Trekking Hatchet, I bought it on a closeout since it's been replaced by the Classic. Anyhow, It's Ben a Fav. It doesn't have the ears of a Scandinavian Style, But more European, Regardless its a great Swedish Steel Hatchet. But when I take my "Sharp Hammer" that's what designer coined the SP-53, I don't take a Hatchet with me, maybe just a Folding Saw. Job well done Amigo. Ciao.

That tool looks great after you cleaned it up Dave! I belong to the same group as your Dad. I only sharpen my axes as sharp as I can get them with the Lansky puck. Then, a quick once over with an oily rag. That works well for me. Both schools of thought have their pros and cons! Like most things, it's subjective. I appreciate your approach, and open mind on this. Too many folks fall into the trap of dictating what's right, or wrong on various topics! As always, great video brother!

Say Heah Dave, That's the only part I really don't like, That's why having a few knives, I don't let them get out of hand and I treat them after I use them. You never mention a Tomahawk, I have a couple, But my 2Hawks Warbeast is my Fav. Infact I use it when I go lite in cold weather, One of my Fav Lite Cold Weather Trio are my Bokor Black Rold with my Mora Classic #1 attached in a Piggyback that I concocted. My 2Hawks Warbeast Tomahawk and my Wooden Handle Fiskar Folding Saw. Seriously, Dave, The Trio is Aces. ,, .

And it's made from the 5160 Steel, Infact, I thought of you Sun. Us joking and enjoying sports, But I changed my mind and just took my O. K. C. Ranger T. F. I. and my Gen2 SP-53, plus a folding saw just to go through the motion of doing some hiking, and bush crafting, I knew we would be pigging out and watching the Dawgs (Brown's). The reason I thought of you is how you make sparkles heh heh heh, Anyhow I thought I paid more for my T. F. I. which I paid only $69.00 which you can still buy it at that price now, Just search T. F. I. and the price. Anyhow, It's a 5 1/4" blade and a 1/4" thick. But it's handle heavy, don't get me wrong, It's not a heavy, heavy knife, But you would think a 1/4" thick blade would lite chop, We'll it doesn't do as good as my Ranger Afghan or even my BK-2, But instead it's very nimble and nimble in hand. That's where I thought of you, If you like making fireboard, The T. F. I. is an idea knife, I don't chop with it, the balance is in back of the index finger, But I do baton chop with it, It's built like a nimble tank, very impressed, and tge square handle allows me for better control or Hockey Sticks would be round, Think about it, Yeah it's a boxy handle but I never got a hot spot or blister using it, Infact it's very comfortable. and tge sheath is decent. Back when I got mine, I think tgey were RC'ing them 58 RC, but since Lowered the RC so they don't chip as easy, Regardless it still holds a decent edge like my SP-53. Check it out, Playboy.

Dave, thanks again. Maybe you can help me out because you seem a bit more experienced with axes than I am. After debating for a while on whether or not to get the Woodcraft Pack Axe or the Hudson Bay axe (Velvicut version) I've decided to go with the Hudson Bay only because I've always wanted an axe head in that pattern. Thing is, I can't decide on the 19" or the 24". The 19" would fit better on my pack and would be easier/lighter to carry, however, do you think the 2lb head would be awkward on a handle length that short? (and it actually comes closer to 17-18" from Council). I like being able to chop with one hand sometimes too though...how does your Woodcraft Pack axe do single handed? Also, do you ever find that the 24" handle gets in the way when doing smaller tasks or when working on your knees? Thanks again Dave any advice is much appreciated. I always dig your videos, keep 'em coming!

+Alfonso Casillas Thank you for watching, Alfonso. Here are the stones I use and the grits are listed - www.amazon.com/Yontree-Sharpening-Stones-Whetstone-Sharpener/dp/B016W866LA?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00. -Dave

Nice axe and tools! Like the technique :) And my father says the same as yours. I want my bladed tools to be as sharp as possible, inclouding my gränsfors bruks and wetterlings axes/hatchet but my father insist an axe/hatchet dose not need to be that sharp. I use tormek t7 for the sharpening part and a homemade strop. I will buy that puck for the pack tho! :) Thanks for the vid and I both liked and subbed ;) PS. Please excuse my poor spelling. (swede here)

Thank you for taking the time to watch, like, sub and leave your excellent comment, my friend! Nice to hear that your father would yell at you for the exact same reason! They are funny sometimes. Sounds like you have an excellent sharpening system, Emil, and your spelling is perfect! I hope to talk with you again soon and it's great to have you here! -Dave

I don't bother with the glove, I just wipe the BLO on with my hand. Great routine to care for your new axe.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
I will do that sometimes, too, Bill, but not if I can help it...haha! I think applying the BLO by hand, as opposed to applying with a rag, is much more enjoyable and satisfying. Thank you for watching and leaving your kind words, my friend! -Dave

Supposedly blo has heavy metals in it, idk but gloves can't hurt.

@@frankgulla8782 I don't think gloves are a bad idea, I just don't wear them. I don't wear masks either.
