The priest’s final lesson included that god said “don’t seek vengeance because it is mine”. His character flaw was his ego for revenge. But why do we still root for him? Because we. Would’ve all done the same thing.

She actually loves the book! The whole video is a sarcastic remark, and I think the title might be for clickbait. In the last few seconds of the video, she says, “And you realize he (Monte Cristo) didn’t and couldn’t (live his life) because he got really f** up in prison, and this was all he knew how to do. And you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m the a***ole! This is a classic for a reason!’” A very misleading title, yes hahahaha I love this book very much too

The Count ceases to be Dantès. He becomes Providence, or at least he considers himself to be this. That’s why he adopts multiple personas. The Count is the cruel and vengeful side fixated on revenge against Villefort, Danglars, and Fernand; while Lord Willmore is the compassionate and kind side, dolling out help and friendship to the honest and good people of the world, like the Morrell family. He isn’t being petty. He’s using the physical and real world wealth he comes into as a ‘tool’ to dole out ‘real world’ rewards and punishments. Because waiting for those awards and punishments to happen in the afterlife isn’t soon enough. That’s why, at the end of the story, he basically walks away from the money. Leaving it to Valentine Villeforte (his enemies daughter) and Maximilian Morrell (his supportive former boss’ son) - because he has no further use of this ‘tool’ of God.

I disagree. Being a man whose life and love was taken away by greed and jealousy, he acted in the way he saw fit - which was to slowly destroy his enemies and enjoy doing it. He didn't care about the collateral damage, but you've almost missed the point of the story. Towards the end, he questions himself if all the suffering he's caused was worth the revenge.

@@yay29823I watched the whole video including the part where she realizes she’s a butt, but I still think she missed the point as many modern feminazis do. Edmond wasn’t “messed up in prison” and thats why he wasn’t willing to be a cuck like she envisions all modern men must be in this hyper effeminate society we now live in. Edmond was seeking justice, comeuppance, an eye for an eye because that’s what justice demands and he knew it would only happen if he was the avenging angel, if he gave himself up to seek retribution. This wasn’t a psychotic breakdown or whatever other Freaudian garbage modern thinkers want to suppose, this was a sane man choosing to lose himself for revenge. It’s instinctual to men, you get pushed, you push back, you get hit, you hit back. And sure at the end He has lost it all, but he had already forfeited it all away in the prison, revenge was his driving force and for whatever might be said of Edmond you cannot say He was not a man of conviction, and that’s what makes him a tragic hero

Locked in a dungeon for 14 years. Living in the absence of light for so long that his eyes permanently adjust to it like that of a cat. To witness his only friend in that hell, his only companion to convince him to not kill himself, struggle in death from cataplexy. To know all of this suffering was caused by the machinations of a cowardly drunk, a greedy shipmate, a jealous rival and a ruthless judge. To know that he trusted every last one of these men. This is what Edmond Dantes suffered through. There's a reason he doesn't *just* kill them. His suffering had to be repaid in full. It wasn't enough to hurt them, he had to ruin them. Both them and whatever reputations they'd built from his years in prison. (Not to mention that, thanks to them, his father died of starvation and his other father figure, Morrell, almost killed himself because Danglars refused to help him.)

Getting justice when the justice system has not just failed you but actively harmed you is not being a petty ass bitch. The men who betrayed him were his oldest friend, a business rival and an employee on his ship who thought he should have been picked for captain because he was older. Also the best friend betrayed him to steal his girl. So justified pettiness. And the book is definitely a moral "Dont hold grudges" type of story, but I love it so much, the movie is amazing.

It's easy to judge a character in a book when you have never walked in the life of that character. There are probably thousands of Edmonds out there in the prison system. Sent there and doing time for a crime they did not commit only to be framed by the ones they trusted. What else would you have time to think and do. What would YOU do if you had the chance to settle the score. However, there is that old saying. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. "God will give me justice". Some hate, debts, and wrongs cannot go unpunished or left standing.
