Odds of it hitting a satellite is almost zero they are tiny and they dont emit a gravitational pull like earth so odds are they are fine plus satellites have built in thrusters so when theu calculate the route of the asteroid if it could collide with one they would move it yet again odds of it hitting one is so small it would take me ages to write it and the asteroid is too big to fully break up in the atmosphere it will most likly break some small pieces off at most besides the odds of it hitting us and you being in the impact range is less than goin to work and dying on the way to unforseen problems

I'm guessing (hoping) the narrator has no idea what he is saying. "It will pass about 32,000 km closer than the geostationary satellites" - Um... THOSE suckers are at 35,000 kms above surface. Is telling us it will be only 3000 kms away too scary or something? Or are we not supposed to know where geostationary is?
@zenithperigee74427 ай бұрын
It stood out to me when he said that, he definitely misspoke. It's supposed to be about a ~1/10th of the distance between Earth and the moon. If it were ~1% instead, I think that would be a serious problem. It's estimated to be _cruising_ at ~30K m/s. I'm wondering how it's pass by the Earth, assuming it doesn't impact, will affect not only it's future orbit but velocity. The animations I've seen appear to show Apophis passing by Earth in the opposite direction to Earth's counterclockwise rotation as it passes from the Eastern U.S. towards the West as it heads off towards the Sun whilst sunlight obscures it at that point. I wonder if it will in fact decrease it's velocity.
