To be frank. Shikikan influence on them literally made them as stubborn as he is. Shikikan always comes first when it comes to life and death situations, at least he's different from any other Commanders cuz most Commanders wouldn't even care about a life of a Nikke except for theirs as much as he is. That's why they couldn't afford to lose a person who treat them like human beings rather than just war machines.

I am pretty sure that at this point, we can theorize that vapaus actually is beneficial to the nikkes, Behemoth,rapi and marian all have gone through evolutions after getting injected with vapaus.
