Because I know a fair bit about plate armor: there were four effective ways to beat someone wearing plate armor. From worst to best, there was: poleaxe, which is a axe head, warhammer back, and pointy tip, all stuck onto a big stick, and is notable for being able to cleave unarmored men in half, or give someone in platemail a concussion. Unfortunately, most men in platemail had pollaxes of there own, or similarly long weapons, so yeah. Next was the lance. A lance is just a very big stick, which you brace against yourself whilst on horseback, charging straight at the bastard. Such a charge could have more kinetic energy that a .50bmg round, and could break the ribs of someone in platemail (energy transfer being what it is, there's a lot less penetration that a bullet, hence the lack of skewering). Unfortunately, such a charge is not only obvious, but easily met by someone else with a lance, or possibly just a pike. The next most effective was a dagger. Rather than trying to bludgeon them through the armor, just grapple the bastard and stab his armpits, or his groin. This is very effective, but they can use a dagger against you in the grapple, or just kill you before you get within grappling distance. The most effective method was, of course, to find 7 friends, all attack the dude at once, and physically restrain them by having one dude grabbing each limb. Then bludgeon the dude to death. Or capture him and get that sweet ransom money.

The last one reminds me of a movie scene from the 1980's... I can't remember the movie, was sort of a parodie on different historic era's and I think it had some big stars of the time in it. One bit of that movie had what must've been a parody on Robin Hood, with this obvious rogue-ish guy with a dagger and a bow, talking to his father (who had been a crusader) about taking on one of those dastardly vile noblemen. His father trying to talk him out of it, saying "Son, you are young, you have a whole life but it will be short if you choose to fight a man in full armor who wields the best swords." - to which the rogue-ish guy replies, "he might don the best armor and wield the best sword, but I wield ten drunken friends eager for a scrap." When it came to the fight, yep, ten drunk bastards dragged off what looked like a wildly flailing tin man from one of those old "Wizard of Oz"-type movies.

To be fair the plate armour dude if any good at all would nail one or perhaps two of your pals. But yeah serious outnumbering is a good bet. But only if you have aggressiveness. If you hold back and don't all move in. You're dead. But keep powering through and you win in this case. Minus a friend or two.

don't forget the method so effective people stopped wearing it: Firearms.
@Santisima_Trinidad
@Santisima_Trinidad 3 жыл бұрын
@@233Deadman well, not really. To start plate could stop bullets, and even those which could penetrate were stopped by the gambeson underneath. Even during the tudor era plate was being made which could completely stop bullets (admitly that armor was extremely heavy, and thus not suitable for combat on foot) and during the Napoleonic wars plate was being made for some unit's of cavalry (specifically heavy cavalry units) which whilst it would normally be penetrated by musket shots, the wearer would normally be unharmed. Unless a second musket ball went through the existing hole, or the plate deteriorated after several shots and didn't put up as much resistance to any other incoming shots. During WW1 the Italians made suits of plate armor which could survive withering fire from infantry rifles and machine guns, although these would also deteriorate after sustained fire, and Large caliber mounted machine guns and artillery fire could still kill the wearer despite the armor. Also in WW1, it was noted that after being issued metal helmets, the number of head injuries increased, as the metal was generally sufficient to prevent a bullet from killing the wearer if struck. In the modern era, we have ballistic vests which can take shots from .50 BMG rounds, and if desired those vests could be expanded to cover all the same areas as full plate armor, although the weight would be abhorant, and is technically closer to brigandine, which is similar to full plate in that it's metal body armor, but is formed of several small sections for each component, riveted together and covered in fabric rather than larger plates. It also tends to have less coverage due to it's construction not allowing the same coverings between the arms and legs and the torso.
@FurryGram
@FurryGram 3 жыл бұрын
Plate armor didn't make you invincible, just practically immune to cutting attacks. That's why they had warhammers and polearms, so that if someone in plate armor needed a good curb-stomping they could just pound the armor hard enough to break bones and crush ribs until all that was left was a screaming heap of metal and pain

Man, my HEMA club got this fame of being the dishonorable shady one in our region for the most pathetic reason. Mind, I’m from Brazil in a city settled by the Japanese. city is pretty much half japanese half literally anything else; it is filled with dojos of all kinds, especially kendo ones; in which most of them, if you’re not japanese, you can’t enter. For this reason, a lot of non japanese gathered to practice HEMA, most of us for fun, but we have our share of well intentioned try hards, which became our “trainers”. So, one day we are training and some 15 or so japanese fellas arrive, all dressed up in their hakamas and wielding their bokens all smug and snickering at our practice. They came to “challenge” us, but by “challenge” they were clearly implying they would put us on our place. We were intimidated for sure, they seemed to know what they are doing and and we were just a bunch of friends having fun at a public park, but man their attitude, it pissed most of us off to a point that we accepted even for the slight chance of shutting them up. Our “trainers” set with them duel rules basically based on age and practice levels. The duels were a disaster. Every. Single. Time. The kendo guys would just raise their bokken way up high, scream, and lunge foward. All of us from hema just stepped aside, parried or straight up stocked them. And every. Single. Time. The kendo guys would scream bloody murder that we were breaking the rules and doing unhonorable moves. It got to a point that we almost all forgot our fake swords and went straight into fist fighting. However, our trainers mustered some cold blood and “”conceded”” defeat, even though we had won absolutely all the fights, even with our most new members against some guys that clearly had some practice. After this duel this 15 or so guys went to every single other dojo and accused us of practicing only low blows and dishonorable things, and the fame stuck with us. We quite don’t mind actually, it is a mix of funny and sad, but we still train and our group still thrives, so all is good.

Lulz. I know exactly the type of move you are thinking about. I've tried Kendo once, i've tried HEMA once or twice and i've run SCA heavy many many times, 10 years or so. Kendo is really odd, Kendo is very much a sport since you are only allowed to do certain things and then you are supposed to shout out the moves you are doing so the judges can judge their execution and accuracy. Then after landing the blow you are supposed to move a certain distance past your opponent and scream while doing it. Kendo is really odd. You can learn proper swordfighting techniques in Kendo, you also learn some (but far from all) Kenjitsu, which is a way more "respectable" martial art (dunno what word to use, real? historical?). But Kendo is really weird. My primary memory of trying Kendo was that my feet hurt so much i wanted to cry because you fight barefoot for some reason and my feet suck. And i did really really well since i playfought with swords when i was a kid and didn't really dare shout out my moves since i was shy. So i was like block all the attacks by the opponent, try my best to do the weird scream and shuffle. Point is. Kendo is a sport. That's fine. People who claim Kendo is a martial art are wrong. You can argue Kenjitsu to be a martial art, that's fine, i know to little of it to judge it. But Kendo is a sport. And in sports there are often very odd rules. Rules to control and steer the sport into being what the practitioners want to test. For example if football didn't have no touch ball, it would turn into rugby. I don't like Kendo, because my feet hurt when i hear the name. And i totally see why your club Caio wrecked their shit with HEMA. Since if their club was super rigid with their Kendo rules, they will have zero idea how to swordfight, but be great at Kendo. But Kendo is a sport.

From about age 15 to 25 my friends and I used to make our own "boffer" swords. Originally it was 3/4" wooden dowel rods with thin pipe foam and duct tape, but our crafting techniques improved and we started using sheets of foam to make more blade-like swords and other fancier weapons. The weapons also got bigger and heavier and I even made a life-size FFFVII Buster Sword. By that time I'd gotten to know some people who played Amtgard and they were using graphite golf shafts and pool noodles for padding. I offered to duel them using my sword versus theirs using their rules. They thought they'd have the upper hand because of the difference in sword mass, but what they didn't realize was that I had a decade of practice, some formal training and my sword was counter-weighted so the pivot was perfect. I could keep up with them easily and they couldn't get a blow past me. If only they'd have gone for the back of the leg.

This is a sport for fencing. Not a recruiting station for their ideology. I’ve only hear of one group who were supposedly Nazis in Germany. They were swiftly banned. If the loser takes you to court afterwards the contract and witnesses will prevail and the loser will have to pay court fees. There was no way for Jarnac to duel the Dauphin -> so de Vivonne replaced him. So, the King that allowed the duel was actually the one who was spreading the rumor in the first place. 3) The duel was not that postponned - in fact, the duel took place even BEFORE the new king was sacred. 4) the move "coup de Jarnac" was not dishonnorable. Only after a long time, the sense of the expressoin "coup de Jarnac" shifted from meaning skillful to dishonnorable. (cf. 5 minutes on fr.wikipedia.org)
