I can tell just how you read the words that you are thinking of your grandfather. I miss mine too. Thank you Mr. Crawford for this book. Not only does it teach wisdom but it takes me back to when my elders where alive, telling me things i wouldnt understand until later in life.

I love the Wanderer's Havamal, it captures both the ancient wisdom and down to earth homeliness. I wish I could show my own grandfather this, but he's gone on to other places. He taught me many of the lessons you've read and written here. Thank you for bringing back pleasant memories and sharing your gifts with us, Dr. Crawford!

That this is such universal wisdom and not just exclusive to the Norse/Vikings is why I connect with Odin so well. And that he made his own mistakes makes him so grounded and human and can speak from experience. As usual love your content Jackson. And btw, whatever troubles you're going through right now you will get through it! Keep your head up!

I really enjoyed the cowboy version. I can imagine a Rooster Cogburn seated across from me in the dusty corner of the tavern bar sharing me his wisdom and calling me a damned fool. Hoping whatever can go well does go well with whatever these recent troubles are.

As a new subscriber to your channel, I've been thoroughly enjoying the abundance of knowledge you have to offer. I would like to share my sincerest apologies for the loss of your family home, and I'm glad to see that you're allowing your grandfather to live on in such an interesting and unique take on Old Norse poetry. Thank you for what you're doing, and I hope you continue to see success with it. Wishing you all the best from my drab, mountain-less homeland.

Reminds me of Firefly. Just picked up the Wanderer’s Havamal. Enjoying it. Really like the Cowboy’s. Trying to read the Old Norse as well, but just for the sounds. What is the symbol you use for the word “man”? It looks like a trident? Don’t know how to say that one.

Very interesting concept. I've come across two different variations on modern interpretive translations / retellings of older works. This one and one of Tacitus' Germania. The retelling of Germania was read in such a snobbish and off putting way that I wanted to stomp on the reader's head. I don't think Tacitus was as snobbish towards the Germans, and in every other translation, despite the clear and appropriate bias in favor of Rome, and against Germans, I never felt insulted reading any other translation. Needless to say I think this "Cowboy's Havamal" was a much better experience. It's fun to see the correlations between a Germanic person from 2000 years ago, in the woods, living off the wilderness, or maybe on the outskirts of Rome, or even as Foederati, and comparing it to a more modern Germanic man in America. Some things change, and some are eternal, and seeing the comparisons and contractions is fun.
