Without the cows, there would be no ranch. Today we take a look at what it takes to work with cows, the beginnings of trust and how a cows physiology and psychology plays into dealing with them as co-workers and livestock.

You've just provided it wonderful illustration of the difference between"animal welfare" and "animal rights". Your respect and affection for your animals is heart warming. They appreciate your concern for their welfare and comfort. So do I. Best wishes!

Appreciated this video explaining how animal health is of utmost importance in whether you stay in business or not. On a lighter topic addressing stocking rates. In the late '70's and early '80's, I lived in the southeast corner of Colorado where grass is probably as scarce as it is up there. They explained to me that they were working on a new breed of cattle called 6 - 40 cows. The cows had a mouth six foot wide moving at 40 mph to get enough to eat.

Cattle are amazing! We have had cattle on the farm that were like dogs. We could open the gate and let them follow us around the yard, they would even follow us out into the hay field to check gopher traps. They never ran off and we never had to worry about them going far. We had a steer that loved hugs and would almost force you to hug him before you could enter the gate. Cattle are magnificent and I miss working with them.

You've done it again...."given us a reason to keep coming back". Your presentation and determination; as shown in the closing; does more than the words in showing you are a person to be admired and respected. Even if the cows can't say thank you, let me say it for them; MOOOOOO (translated, Thank you, Mike you'e a good man).Have a good day and hug the family, they appreciate you too.

My Grandpa only had 50 Charlaois Cows and one big bull named Sunny! Sorry for the misspelling. My Grandpa and I loved that 2000 lb beast. He did his job and then he actually got tired and wanted his own space. That's when we would baby him and he would let us kids take him for rides. We would put a rope around his neck. One of us wld lead him with handfuls of corn while the other would ride. It was all fun until we got caught from Grandma to put him back into his pen. To this day I Think Sunny knew he days fun was over from his hhhuurrrmmpph. But, we kids still gave him an ear of corn and a fresh bale of hay. Oh I forgot apples from the orchard.

This is a great video Mike! I learned a long time ago that animals are the same as people basically. They each have their own personalities their likes and dislikes and just as you said they come to recognize the person that brings them food and can help them. Like people there are cows that are, so to say mean, and those that are a lot less aggressive. Like anything tho backed into a corner they will try to defend themselves or get away. Love animals and if you treat them well they will respond. Have to take care of those mama cows because that is basically your welfare. You and Erin are doing a great job and keep up the good work!

Great video Mike! The land there seems so lush to have a stocking rate of 1 to 30. There are certain areas around here on the edge of East Texas where we can run 1 to 5 sometimes 1 to 3, on improved pastureland. And in contrast, I have friends in West Texas that can do no better than 1 to 50. Thanks for sharing!

Hi again! Well sounds like the description of being human including that food word! Lol! The difference is you've taken the time to really learn who they are and how they do life which I believe will be a huge factor to your success. You're a great model for some other ranchers and farmers who only focus on the bottom line. Those kind would definitely benefit in the long run to pay attention to your practices. I really believe even though you got into ranching cold your radio and business background prior has served you well as to your approach into a new industry. And with my own years of experience with animals and children you really do get back out what you put in! All people and animals are different but as you know part of success is who/what you have around you. Mike you've done and are doing all the right things in combination. What I admire about you is you are always wanting to learn and try new things! That hunger to do better is what I've seen lacking in some others and they remain in a stagnant place while change swirls around them. You and Erin are doing great and are really nice people besides. Only a bright future for you and the cows in your Wyoming Life!!! We all are blessed that you share it with you...

As a kid seeing John Wayne singing seemed silly till I learned when sorting or feeding it lets the cows know where you are and cows trained to come to your voice are a gift . So when city people ask, have you ever had a cow in your house, and you explain about warming a chilled calf are you proud or embarrassed .

Amen and amen! We have a smaller herd-20 head-but we love and respect the privilege of being stewards of them. The open gate is a truth-they know they’re not supposed to be on the other side and if there’s a hole in the fence, they know exactly where to go to get back through that hole to get where they’re supposed to be. Lol. We watch for calving issues, feed them, bond with them and treat them with respect as the Lord intended. You’re children are so sweet and blessed to know about these things and to have such wonderful parents. Blessings to you and yours.

Mike, being around cattle my whole life all the things you said ring true! I find it interesting that you wear the same thing every time you work with your herd. My dad does the exact same thing! Great video, Mike. You are so right, cows all have a unique personality. Some curious, gentle, nervous, etc. You have to watch them each in a different way. Most don't mean to hurt you, you just got in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some are mean and you sell them. Keep the good ones and enjoy the bovine mentality. They are smart in a dumb way, at least our Angus are. Keep up the good work.
