I think it would be slightly more accurate to say that the fact that the NHL spent all this time and resources just to have the Coyotes survive this long and still fail is an embarrassment to hockey. Surviving in a dessert by itself could be a good thing... if they weren't on life support so many times.

it's because Bettman thinks he's playing "the long game" by gradually building up interest in the US south to the point where people actually care enough to fill the arenas regularly so the franchises make money. the problem is that even when they are doing well they struggle to break even. San Jose followed this pattern for two decades, barely making any money even when they did turn a profit. this has been the case for over 20 years for most of these franchises. Bettman needs to admit his mistake in keeping this team in AZ for so long or step down. move them to QC. they have a great fanbase and a fully-functional 18000-seat stadium.

Bettman and the owners don't want to admit that their Arizona experiment has failed. No other league would continue beating a dead horse and carry a franchise that has never made money and never drawn consistent fan support for this long. We're not talking 5-10 years. We're talking over 25 years, a quarter of a century. The NBA, NFL and MLB would have pulled the plug over a decade ago. There are plenty of markets that could have already made over ten-fold what the Coyotes have had they been moved.

All owners take a hit having to subsidize a money pit franchise that has never once finished in the black in over 25 years. And that includes all 7 Canadian teams, who make up a third of the league's revenue. There is no way in hell a Canadian team would be hemorrhaging as much money as the Coyotes have for the past decade. Winnipeg, in one year, made more money than Atlanta did in a decade.

Yes, Winnipeg made more money than Atlanta... and there are probably a dozen US markets that current don't have an NHL team that would make more than Winnipeg ever could. TV contracts also have to be taken into consideration. Same principle... NBC, FOX et all will pay more for a league with more American teams, period. More people in the states will watch 2 American teams, even the coyotes, than a team from a small Canadian city where most of them can't locate on a map.

The PHNX Coyotes podcast lied throughout their "debunking" of stories about the Coyotes. Had Glendale city council not intervened, the Coyotes would have moved to Winnipeg in 2011 or Seattle in 2013. For Leah, Steve, and Craig to say the Coyotes would never have relocated is laughable. I'll take Katie Strang's sources over Craig Morgan's every time. Also, Craig Morgan saying that fans will pay $400 to see Crosby, Ovie, Matthews, and McDavid is insane. They won't even pay the cheapest ticket prices in the league to see them in Glendale.
