Crazy that the NHL is thinking about an unproven market after 30 years of failing in Arizona. Absolutely Incomprehensible that they aren’t beelining to Quebec.

Houston is a fair weather sports town where the average sports fan doesn’t care about hockey. After the initial excitement of having a new team went away things would get ugly, especially if the team was as bad as the Coyotes have been.

When it comes to hockey, most sun belt cities are. It doesn't take long for people to lose interest and that's why the Phoenixes and the Atlantas become the NHL's lands of the ten-dollar ticket. Ultimately, hockey will never challenge football or basketball - college or pro - in the sun belt.

Houston has no established Hockey base.....staying makes more sense but you have to find a suitable location where any vote if required can succeed. Also Quebec is not valid when the Canadian dollar is so weak against the dollar.

As an Atlanta hockey fan I want to set the record straight, Georgia has a plethora of professional teams in various leagues of differing levels and they all have butts in seats. Hell the Atlanta metro area even has a roller hockey beer league with multiple roller hockey arena’s in different cities around Atlanta. People care about the sport here. Thrashers owners fucking sucked and really only ever gave two shits about the hawks, and the Flames owners was losing a shit ton of money on his construction business and made the best choice for the team and the players by giving them a chance to keep existing as a team and to keep his other businesses operating. In better news we’ve got a new hockey arena being built near Atlanta and are ready for a 3rd shot at having a team in the NHL.

@@scooter29 and as I've explained both teams leaving wasn't due the market. We have 8 iirc professional teams and collegiate hockey teams. 1:25 One of the Knights co-owners made a pitch to put a NHL team in the Cobb County area (not far from where the Braves moved to) but the NHL was fixated on the Time Warner bid because they were a massive media concern. And Ted (who still had influence pre-AOL merger) wasn't going to have it anywhere other than downtown. The NHL chose major media management over a hockey management group that was scrappier but likely would have known a lot more about what they were doing. Also, not long before the Thrashers started up, Harvey Schiller took off for the Yankees. That hurt the general competence of management TREMENDOUSLY. As much as a staunch ITPer (look it up) as I am and as much as it pains me to say it, a NHL team in Cobb probably would have made it.

Not enough business in Quebec City?! What a crock. Yeah it is a small market but that market has a stadium for starters which the Yotes don't have, large, rabid and loyal fanbase which is bigger than what the Yotes currently have and with all of what I just said will easily make more money than the Yotes have ever made which is pretty easy because they haven't made money. I get why they won't move there and that Houston or Salt Lake City would make more financial sense but to say there is not enough business/money in Quebec City is BS of the highest order.

Quebec is already profitable even no team is there by selling Nordiques merchandise. It proves it's a good hockey market. That said unfortunately, the NHL just want more $$$

It is not BS at all. The number 1 reason people are hesitant to go back to QC is due to not enough business/money. This is just a fact that can be proven. QC is a relatively poor city for Canada. It's not a knock on Quebec... this is just the truth.

@@codingwitheric Versus never making money and playing in a less than 5K ink in Arizona? A venue they can't even sell out consistently by the way for a franchise that has rarely ever been good since leave Canada? Coyotes have not made money since being in Arizona that is a fact. If they go to Quebec with their 18K seat arena they will sell more than 5K tickets a night iin fact we both know that entire season of tickets regardless if the team was trash or not would sell out immediately. By ticket sales alone they immediatley make more money that way unless you can tell me how playing in a 5K rink makes more money than a 18K rink even with a weak Canadian dollar. Yotes have been bleeding money for decades and will continue to bleed them money. If this was about money the yotes would have left years ago given they never made any. I know Quebec City won't get a team back but to say there would be no money in it hold little to no water at all by ticket sales alone which is still very important to the NHL brain trust. Plus I am willing to bet more people buy Nords jersesys than Yotes jerseys and the Nords haven't been around since the 90s.......So yeah they can make money dude.

QC will never increase revenue on any new tv deals. Putting a team in QC doesnt grow the game.
@mryellow864
@mryellow864 Жыл бұрын
@@rona6063 Neither will NHL's current model for TV deals either. NHL treats TV deals like it is 1983 locking them to regions/territorties. I don't know about you but making it hard for regular people to watch the games they want in the era of streaming is not a good formula to growing the game so using that excuse for Quebec City is pretty weak.

Quebec City would immediately be the smallest market in the league. And it’s not like Winnipeg where everyone is gonna root for the Jets and they can just barely make the numbers work. There will be a diehard Canadiens bloc that would never go to Nordiques 2.0 games.

I lived in Quebec for 6 years and nah....it isn't a wealthy city by any stretch compared to other markets. Great place to live for the working class but there isn't a massive upper class population in Quebec which would support the team into the future. A second Montreal team without a doubt would be more successful than the Quebec market.

Matthews had to join a European team for the Quebec Pee Wee Tournament because there weren’t enough AAA level players in Arizona to ice a team for that level of competition.
