Most if not all of the trading losses are from buying options. Owning the option allows you time for something to happen - but only a short time. A lot of what happens the short term is controlled by the market makers - the same entities that sold the short dated options! I wonder why options always seem to close out of the money?

I mainly trade 0 dte index options but i scalp and my trades are usually less than 10 minutes. The longer i hold the bigger chance of losing. During mid day you can buy a spx option for around $200 that is the equivalent of buying 300 to 400 shares of SPY but your risk is capped at the $200 entry price. So a $1.00 move on SPY or $10 move on SPX can make you $300 to 400. So.for a max loss of $200 in this example you are trading near $240,000 worth of SPY with a max loss of $200! If you have a setup and patience, there has never been a better time to trade.

@ If you keep getting stopped out it sounds like you might using too much capital or over leveraged. Rule of thumb is use only 10 percent of your account. If those losses offset your gains then it could be your trading strategy such as where you enter and exit. Having a tight stop loss can prevent a lot of traders from missing out on potential gains and letting their trade play out.

I agree with the headline. I think most people... even set it and forget it 401k / IRA investors are gamblers. Trading is not gambling. It can be if you are not doing it correctly and if only 6% of all traders are actually profitable that means that 94% are gambling. So the real question is are you the 94% or are you the 6%. The 6% needs the 94% to make our accounts grow. To get into the 6% camp takes years and lots of money and training. The lure of the "easy money" or "fast money" will insure there are always that 96% continually coming back into the markets. Greed and Feer are the same as they have ever been. If you get emotional when you trade you are gambling not trading. Trading has rules for everything. In fact you know you have arrived when it is boring.
