First, I have to say RIP Delores O'riordan (that will come into play further, at the end of my comment!). Second, Delores was inspired to write this due to the deaths of 2 young boys in Warrington, England on March 25, 1993... 3y/o Jonathan Ball and 12y/o Timothy Parry were innocently playing in the streets when 2 bombs, hidden in separate trash cans, went off. (54 other innocent by-standers were injured as well) The bombs were hidden there by the IRA (Irish Republican Army), as part of the long-standing War between Great Britain and Northern Ireland (over territory). Religion ended up entering into it, so of course it sort of became a war between Catholics vs. Protestants as well (that's partly why she's standing at the crucifix in the video). The War was/is known as "The Troubles". In case anyone is interested, here are some important facts about the song and the reason it was written. I'm hoping maybe it'll help those who don't know, to understand the images in the video... 1.) The title is self-explanatory, and you absolutely understood it correctly Biz!! It's NOT about any one specific person (as some seem to think)... Zombies are "mindless" by definition. Delores found the word "Zombie" fitting for those committing mindless, atrocious acts on fellow humans during war. 2.) The disagreement which led to "The Troubles", started in 1916. HENCE THE LINE: "It's the same old theme since 1916".😉 It had become a near civil war with 24/7military presence on the streets. Delores herself grew up under those conditions... 3.) The boys didn't die instantly. Hence the opening line: "Another head hangs lowly, child is SLOWLY taken"..... Little 3y/o Jonathan and 12y/o Timothy both passed SLOWLY, days later, after suffering horrifically.😪 4.) It's INTENTIONAL when she says "Bombs" TWICE in the chorus. It's in honor of Jonathan and Timothy.... there were TWO of them and they were killed by TWO separate bombs. That's why the chorus is: "and their bombs, and their bombs". One bomb for each boy.... 5.) The line: "But you see, it's not me, it's not my family" was because Delores was Irish, and the Irish Republican Army (IRA) planted the bombs that killed the boys SOOOO in turn.... the Irish people as a whole, were blamed and even hated for their deaths and the injuries to the 54 other people. 6.) IMPORTANT: Her "unique" vocals as you put it, were INTENTIONAL and only on this song!! The yodeling-type singing in this one, is actually called "Keening". It's an old Irish mourning ritual. A centuries-old tradition, performed at Irish funerals and mimics the mournful wails and cries of Mothers.... Delores' keening adds so much to the emotion of this song, she does it beautifully!!🤗 K, so I'm gonna leave it at that on this video.😅 HOWEVER.... now you need to do the 2018 Bad Wolves version of "Zombie". It's NOT a cover and was NEVER intended as a cover..... Tommy Vext (lead singer of The Bad Wolves) asked Delores' permission to do an updated version. He wanted to reiterate the same sentiment (he updated the lyrics!) that she and the Cranberries had done, because NOTHING had changed in the political realm between 1993 (when she wrote this) and 2018. Foolish, senseless wars were still going on worldwide. Delores was thrilled with their version of it and actually asked to be on the track with them!! But then... On 1-15-18, the day that she was scheduled to meet The Bad Wolves in the studio to reprise her iconic vocals, she was late. The band got concerned and called her hotel to check on her. Sadly.... she was found passed away in the bathtub. (Official C.O.D. was ruled drowning due to alcohol intoxication). The guys were devasted. They ended up releasing their version (minus Delores' vocals) and donated the proceeds of the sales to her 3 children. Then they went on to make the music video a full-on tribute to Delores! It's stunning and hauntingly beautiful!!😌 You WILL GET GOOSEBUMPS!! And the Bad Wolves took it up a notch sonically and their version freaking ROCKS!!👊 Definitely hit that one next.🙏 You WON'T be disappointed!! Great reaction Biz and glad you liked it! More importantly... I'm glad you got the sentiment behind it even though you didn't know the story behind it.👏👏👏 See you on the next one fam...😎❤

Thanks for your reaction to this intense song! They are from Ireland and singing about the conflict and violence that was going on and had escalated in the 70's and 80's in Northern Ireland and is about a particular incident where two children were killed when they went to the store to buy their mom a Mother's Day card. She is referring to the people that support the IRA and the violence as Zombies. ( I have family out in Northern Ireland and lost a few distant cousins to the senseless violence). Lead singer, Delores O'Riordan passed away about a year ago and always could get your attention with her unique limerick and accent in her voice. Her singing technique that she is using here that sounds abit like Irish yodeling is called keening and is used to add grief or a mourning effect to a song.

From Limerick; Dalores O'Riordan, had a rough start in life. Her Dad suffered severe cognitive impairment in a motorcycle accident and she was kidnapped and raped when she was a young girl. She struggled with PTSD from the kidnapping most of her life. She wrote Zombie after a sectarian bombing in London, which recalled other attacks in Belfast including a trash bin bombing that killed two children and wounded several others. Dalores targeted those who were profiting from the violence, labeling them, "Zombies." The song became an Irish anthem for peace, then a world anthem for peace and helped pressure both sides into negotiations. Paramilitary leaders, both credited her with having great influence in the process and criticized her for it as well. Some even threatened her. She died in her London hotel bathtub prior to recording the reboot of Zombie with Bad Wolves. No autopsy was performed, but the likelihood of suicide or homicide was strong. Either way, Ireland's little hero and peace martyr finally had her rest. During the late 80's I was working with a group that had partnered with people exhausted from the violence In Northern Ireland. Our plan was to integrate protestant and catholic children's schools in Belfast suburbs and to push the US government to send a peace delegation to Northern Ireland. Though there was much resistance to integration, neighborhoods that achieved integration saw violence diminish. Clinton eventually sent Mitchell and the IRA had amassed an arsenal that leveled the killing fields. All along the way Dalores O'Riordan's song kept the pressure on. The accords were signed and the bombing stopped. In the song, Dreams you hear more of her keening than in Zombie. This is an ancient style of Irish singing. Dreams was used at the end of the first Mission Impossible movie. It's Dreams that causes me to grieve her passing more than any other song.

There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin - that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken'. [ ... ] We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension. - Dolores O'Riordan in 2017, on writing "Zombie".

All of the imagery in this video is important. I'm glad you are enjoying the music, but while your head is swinging around with your eyes closed you are missing the images important to the lyrics. The boys have seen so much fighting and violence, they incorporate it into their play. The gold paint is symbolic of the ancient Pagan religion of Ireland. She is standing in front of a cross, symbolizing Christianity. Two factions of Christianity, Protestant and Catholic, are as much at war with each other as the North/South division of Ireland into supporters of remaining a part of Great Britain and the separatists of Southern Ireland. This war began in 1916 and carried on until the mid-1970s, with the fighting going on in and around populated areas.

Thank you for explaining about the imagery, ESP about the "play-fighting" the boys were doing in the vid. Every single part of this vid is important to understanding the song, The Troubles and the horrors of war in general. The Troubles went on for SO LONG that the behaviors depicted in this video became "normal" to all involved.... it was a way of life at that point and "fighting" with guns, and tanks and bombs was all they knew. So in essence, the soldiers, citizens and even the children's behavior became Zombie-like. Just doing what they saw and knew to be the norm... SO sad on all levels. Thank you so much for adding to this comment section!! If my comment hadn't already been so long.... I was gonna explain some of the imagery myself. But it was too long, so I decided to leave it (but I was REALLY frustrated with not explaining it! lol!!) I hoped that someone would eventually explain the imagery. Kudos to you!!!

@@tinagilbert8902 I had read in a novel that in the Pagan religion, four wise women would be appointed as Guardians, granted near eternal life, and given magical powers to guard the land of Ireland. The land itself was magical, enabling it to provide for the people. Fighting and warfare were injurious to the land, damaging its magic. I don't know if the novelist made this up or if it was a true part of Pagan beliefs. But I think Dolores was depicting one of the wise women protectors of Ireland.

A great Irish band. “Since 1916” a reference to WWI but the video refers to the violence in Ireland between the two religious parties who have been fighting for many years. An intense song and video. I highly recommend the song “Linger” next. I’ve had it on my playlist for years.RIP toDolores, we lost her in 2018.

"Since 1916" is a not a reference to WWI, it is a reference to the The Easter Rising of 1916.

This song is heartbreakingly stunning. I’ve been a fan since I first heard them. Thanks for sharing your reaction. No matter what the cause or intent, the children seem to suffer most from violence.

Maybe you should listen to "sunday, bloody sunday" by U2 about the same topic. Or clearly watch the entire movie : "bloody sunday" to have a real idea of what the song is about. I warn you it might be shocking ! But those are true facts....

it seems to me like it´s difficult for you to follow a video....it doesn´t get better when you read the lyrics at the smartphone at the same time. I hate it to watch video reactions without video watchings.

This song transcends ..it’s inspired by the IRA bombings..but it’s like almost every conflict ever. Ireland..the Ukraine now..here in America with racism. Each “side” creates a persona of the other. Seeing an entirety of another group of people as always “blank”…they are bad because “blank” and also against me . It’s simply not true. That’s why zombie. Only someone unthinking and blinded could believe this? But it’s ingrained in childhood. It’s what you grew up with. From birth if X is taught to be a danger and X is the enemy you know nothing else. The end of the video where the children are screaming golden at the cross ( probably my catholic upbringing) but it’s an analogy that you are being literally sacrificed at the whims/motivations/power grabs of *insert your religion/political party 🎉 here* Catholics have done it since the crusades..they’ve def chilled out recently but plenty others continue to do so now.

One of the best singers from Ireland 🇮🇪 male or female it don't matter. Point is you should learn the true meaning of the lyrics. It's about northern Ireland and the right of the whole of Ireland 🇮🇪 to be a free, sovereign and independent country. Have respect the next song you skit over, when you you realise she is dead and talking about a country's history and fight !

BS. This song is about the senseless loss of life during the troubles, particularly the 1993 bombings carried out by the IRA that killed two English boys. It's about people losing their humanity, not Irish rights.....Also, there is nothing disrespectful about not looking up the entire national history of band members before listening to a song. Relax.

Great Irish band. This song is about "The Troubles" which was when England occupied Northern Ireland. The Zombie are British soldiers. Another great song from them is "LINGER".

Zombie is a reference to the children affected by a bombing in England by the IRA that killed 2 young boys on their way to a store to buy cards. She's saying that although she's Irish, neither she nor her family are responsible.

No Sally, that isn’t accurate. Neither your interpretation of what the song represents or your opinion that Northern Ireland is/was “occupied” by England.

Actually the Zombies were those people on both sides resorting to violence rather than dialogue. Way to totally miss the point Sally.
