I, actually, made the table the first time I heard about this which must have been 10 years ago. I will say that I used a piece of plywood cut exactly the right measurement to attach the crates to - I wanted it to last a long time. Then I attached the legs to that. I love it, it's still awesome all this time later.

I bought a dozen of the first crates from Michaels as a lot for $99.00.( online only) also I did not have the energy to stain them, I used a lovely dark oak spray paint and kind of wiped it off with paper towels as I went. It gives you said almost the whitewash effect except with dark. They look amazing.

The first one is a really great idea. I would NOT varnish/stain them before gluing them together. Glue is made to absorb into the wood then dry holding both pieces together. The stain blocks the ability of the glue to absorb in and will not hold very well.

I’m 50 years ahead of you. When our first son was born, money was tight. I got three genuine wooden crates from the grocery store. It still had the company name burned into the wood. I think they were vegetable crates. Nailed one atop the other, gave it a little stain and I had free shelves for his toys and books. Wish you could still find things like this, especially for free.😊😊

The crate locker, the ides to stack the crates that way is fine, but in my opinion I would probably have them stacked like that and different colors too and I would probably just have one tall door without any numbers, probably flowers or something like that.

In the first video. You should not apply wood glue to surfaces that have been stained. First, wood glue is water soluble. Applying an oil stain inhibits the glue's ability to penetrate the wood to bond both surfaces. Ask any woodworker, or do a search on wood glues. I am referring to all Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glues by wood glue. There are other adhesives that may be ok. In this video, they were using PVA wood glue.

They are selling in Michael's for $14.99 now. 18inch ones. I'd like the design that would be more flexible, so you can actually detach these boxes if you are moving or want to change to different usage that'll be great. Instead of gluing them...

As a carpenter for 25 years I can say those legs won't last long if someone leans on the table or it's moved around. I'd suggest using timber a bit thicker with a couple of dowels and glue also. Looks really nice though, simple yet very effective.
