Like you, my health forced me out of work for almost 8 months, and at 64, it's not easy to find jobs, so I'm only part-time. I've been piddling around with woodworking for many years, but in order to make ends, I've taken it a bit more seriously. I make a fair bit from free scrap wood I find. It's amazing how many places you can find scrap wood. Granted, I still buy wood for some projects, but when you can profit from free wood, it's a win.

@20sherilynn Luckily I've been handling most of my power tools for a long time, but I do understand what you mean. I was given a scroll saw from a fellow woodworking friend and have to admit it took me months to get up the nerve to play with it. I'm still not what I'd call proficient with it, but that's because I rarely have a need to use it so not enough practice. Lol I think the jigsaw took me more time than anything to get good at. It's really just one of those things that takes slowing down to learn, then you can speed up once master it. Lol The very best to you in your new quest!

This is a great wood project book kzbin.infoUgkxkPIWb22DigCqxmlXerCyUF4HCl6eSU2L . Most of the projects use the pallet simply as a source of reclaimed wood not as a recognizable pallet so even if you didn't have a pallet you could make these projects with any reclaimed (or even new) wood. The instructions are excellent. The style is charming and would work with lots of different decor. There are quite a number of projects that involve tiling of teh wood pieces which is a really cool idea and can produce beautiful pieces when working with aged wood.

Origin: A hotcake / hot cake is, in fact, what we know today as a pancake! The phrase originated in the 17th century (with the word pancake first appearing in the 1400s) and referred to a cornmeal based pancake which were HOT items (hence the “hot” in the name), especially when made and handed out after church on Sundays. The belief is that they were considered “hot” because they would sell out faster than they were made. Love the garden basket! They are ridiculously priced in stores. Definitely gonna make myself one or two. Thanks Matthew!!

Life hack for drawing a "perfect heart". Invest in a heart shaped box of chocolate for your significant other, once its empty put the cover on and you have a "perfect heart" to trace onto wood. Could even use the box once to make a stencil out of 1/4 ply or something to that effect. The heart shaped boxes come in all kinds of different sizes as well, so you could make multiple different sized designs.

Ok, since Matt encourages us to share, I would like to hopefully prevent some of my fellow newbies from the feeling of DUH! I've had for the past hour or so. I figured out the issues I was having earlier. One, it helps a lot to ensure that you are using the correct drill size. 5/8 is not the same as 3/8 and will cause tear out. Two pocket hole screws are designed to stop when they hit a ledge (i.e., a counter sunk hole), and if you don't counter sink the holes deep enough, the screws won't go in far enough. Hope this helps some of you because I feel like an idiot. Come pay day, I'll be ordering the Kreg Quick Flip, I can tell you. Enjoying making these and have added a new touch that I will put on the brag board once it's finished. Thanks again for the help earlier Matt.

I’ve made 2 of the baskets and made some changes that I thought were an improvement. Firstly instead of using a section of picket for the end portions of the basket I used a 1 x 6. The cedar picket was too thin to drill that many screws into to attach the strips. Secondly, I thought the bottom needed 4 slats rather than 3. The gaps between the pickets on the bottom were spaced too far apart making it a little less useable. I’m much happier with the changes. It is a cute design. Using the pickets for the slats seems a little thick and clunky to me so I might try it with something like a 2 x 4 cut into 3/8inch strips. Love your projects!

It's simply amazing what people will spend money on, AND how much they'll spend on the silliest things. That being said, a good salesman can sell a freezer to an Eskimo, so marketing is definitely vital. I pursued a degree in business administration many years ago with a focus on marketing, and you're right. Companies spend OBSCENE amounts of money on us marketing majors to ascertain the pulse of the market for any given item, and then come up with ways to create discontentment in the general public in order to entice them to buy. That's all marketing is. It's just creating discontentment in people's minds so they THINK they need something that they probably don't need. Such is life. Thanks for all these great ideas!! As a rank amateur woodworker, I actually have the skills necessary to make these, so I'm going to give it a shot!!

Just starting building this basket for an upcoming yard sale and a word of advice: DO NOT TRY TO COUNTERBORE A 3/8" HOLE IN CEDAR. I used both a countersink / counterbore bit and a 3/8" drill bit. Both completely destroyed the ends of the slats. Cedar is too soft to be drilled that close to the end. The best approach I've found is pre-drilling an 1/8" hole and using a #6 x 1" wood screw. It still tears out some of the end but not like the 3/8". If anyone has found a better way, please let us know! Nonetheless, Matt keep doing what youre doing! Origin The phrase “selling like hotcakes” originated in 19th century America. A “hotcake” is a pancake. The hotcakes that were sold in the 19th century are quite different from the pancakes you may eat today, though - hotcakes were typically made with cornmeal. This early version of the pancake was a hit. Often sold at fairs and church events, workers had trouble keeping up with the high demand - and hotcakes sold out as quickly as they were made.

Thanks as always Matthew for new money making ideas. Since I live in area that only have box stores for wood I have reached out to several local fencing companies for wood. Some charge but most give it to me free because it saves them from charges taking it to the dump, so increases their profits and most of the wood has the old wear look great for the project ideas you share.
@4UnlimitedBEing Жыл бұрын
Hmm. Hadn't thought of that. Hey, Joel, are you talking about getting used fence boards from these companies, the stuff they rip out when installing a new picket fence, or...something else? My only concern with collecting used ("reclaimed") wood is getting treated wood, so I have done my best to only pick up scraps & reclaimed wood from indoor projects. (And last summer I got some wall & roof boards from a 1940s build being torn down after sitting vacant for years following a house fire. Got some beautiful cedar 1x8/10/12, and it's amazing how great of shape they're in after a good cleaning to remove soot!) I don't care what anyone says, there's WAY too many toxins in our every day lives and I will NOT use treated lumber. (From my perspective, anything I can do to reduce that toxin load is in the best interest of the humans, companion animals, & overall environment where the end project is going! 😊)

@@4UnlimitedBEing Yes all reclaimed wood I use is for outdoor projects that would be for potting or such nothing that would be used trays or handing of food. @@4UnlimitedBEingif she is doing outdoor projects then the wood have old stain would be fine. Other than the actual fence posts, most fences are not treated wood, usually just cedar because it holds up better and yes most will be stained/sealed at some point but many people will do that anyway. With pallets just look for the makings to see if they are just heat treated or chemically treated, heat treated ones are safe for indoors

I especially like that garden produce basket because when dealing with root stock vegetables, carrots, potatoes, beets, or even tomatoes from the vine, you really like any dirt to be able to fall away, so spaced slats are perfect. If using for other smaller garden goodies, like green beans, or snap peas you can simple lay a dish towel inside. Think I would upscale it with 1/4" mesh liner stapled on the inside of slats, so you can wash-off garden produce with a hose in the same basket you picked in. A very useful item that will sell.

You knocked it out of the park again Matt! Thanks for the new ideas! Keep them coming! I did notice when I zoomed in on the watch holder that they actually used two pieces of wood on theirs because they grain on the base is going a different direction, but the one piece idea makes more sense for sure. Thanks again brother!!

Really enjoy the blue tape band-aid. I just use regular masking tape. And...sometimes a drop of super glue

I know you are an experienced wood worker, but watching you use the impact on that little rinky dink planter/basket really kills me a little inside. Especially because the drill driver is right next to it!

Another great video. I did several of the Spiral Christmas trees last year and sold about 50 each. This vid is great because I had people asking about a "garden" basket just like the one here. Like the Christmas tree one I will get the plans to help support you and the channel. Thanks and have a great day!

At first, I thought they were decorative lobster traps. It's a New England thing. Great video Mat I'm going to make some of your projects. I only have the room to make smalls great ideas.

I live in central Texas, far, far away from lobster country and that was the first thought I had too! Thought Matt was converting lobster traps into baskets.

YOUR garden trug ( An old English word. ) / basket sells very very well here in Thailand, They use them as they are actually were intended to be used. Mine are inserted into slots at each end that greatly makes them strong and long lasting. Thank you. .. I CANNOT get a higher price than $ 6... Its a tough life for some of us.

The only thing I don’t like about your videos is my wife looks at what you are making and wants 3 lol. I’m going to be busy till June. I would like to do some of my own projects. Also my daughter is placing orders now. Great ideas keep it up.

Organic Modern, another terms for Modern Rustic I imagine, is apparently a really hot trend for 2023. And I really like it but how anyone could spend $200 on that first tray is beyond me. Thank you so much for these videos. I haven't made any of the items yet but have watched all the videos and really enjoy seeing the process 😁 .
