The butterfly effect, put simply, is the idea that small, seemingly trivial events may ultimately result in something with much larger consequences. Football has some great examples as well, but nothing comes close to the insane series of events that led to Leicester City winning the Premier League in 2016.

The craziest butterfly effect in football BY FAR is the Icelandic volcano eruption which prevented Robert Lewandowski from signing for Blackburn Rovers. He signed for Dortmund instead, then went to Bayern, where he became the greatest legend since Gerd Muller, and now is balling in Barcelona.

2015/16 was a wild season for the premier league. Manchester United was still struggling (like they still do lmao), Klopp was just starting his revival of Liverpool, City were not as good as the previous season and Chelsea were having a full on horror season. We saw some great new players, Payet & Mahrez were unplayable, Kane showed that he is not a one season wonder, Vardy had one of the best individual seasons, let's not forget Dele Ali's stunning moment. After that season, a lot of changed. West Ham changed their stadium and their badge. City also changed their badge. PL changed the old result board for TV. Conte & Pep came to the league and Mourinho returned for the second time (that time as a United manager). The transfer record was broken.

I don't believe why Manchester City were struggling, especially since it was the first season with KDB and Raheem Sterling. They had almost missed out the Champions League place at that time on the very last matchdays (despite reaching the Champions League semifinal that same season). Imagine Pep somehow leading the club to Europa League instead! As for Chelsea, the 2022/23 season was MUCH worse than 2015/16. They didn't only had their worst Premier League finishes, but also the fewest tally points.

You have to realise Nigel Pearson's story goes even further back. In 1999, he was managing Carlisle and only managed to help them survive relegation from the 3rd division (modern day League 2) thanks to a stoppage time winner from Jimmy Glass, a goalkeeper Pearson only signed as an emergency loan with three matches of the season left. Without that, there's no Pearson surge, and no Championship win to get Leicester to the Premier League in the first place.

On the night that Leicester won the premier league I was driving back home having visited my parents because my dad had collapsed and ended up in hospital. We took him home and got him settled in upstairs and I headed back home. I listened to the match on radio on the motorway and I think I sent a message to my dad about Leicester winning the league. That night he had a massive stroke and was dead 3 weeks later. It’s a story that means nothing, but the whole amazing underdog winning the league kinda lost its sheen for me. Everything I remember of watching the celebrations and reading all the papers with their stories of the extraordinary season is all me sitting next to my stricken father and sleeping on hospital chairs.

Let's not forget about how crazy Neal Maupay did with Brighton against Arsenal during the COVID era that could have changed the course of football in the future. If he didn't injure Bernd Leno, the Arsenal goalkeeper, there will be no more Emiliano Martinez' black magic, and so did Argentina's dominances in international football stages that would have even cemented Lionel Messi to the GOAT status in football. Messi might be retired afterwards due to the lack of international trophies with Argentina.

Just to let you know that when Leicester City won the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspurs were the biggest challenger at that time. They kept Leicester City's title race in a bay until, well, the infamous Stamford Bridge game vs Chelsea (Eden Hazard's equalizer).

Let's go Faroe Islands mentioned! The results against Ranieri's Greece is the greatest achievement of the nation. Faroe Islands, who had not won an official away match since 2003, beat Greece who only a few months earlier finished in the Ro16 in the World Cup.
