Ambitious Japanese games don't really come to the West much anymore because they could be considered money holes. They wouldn't make enough money back in the West to justify localizing it. It was easier to do that in the PS1 and PS2 era because games cost less money to make back then, but nowadays they'd lose more money than they'd make.
@dogmendogmen
@dogmendogmen Жыл бұрын
@@beatziegraham6928It IS Japanese. If the question was a matter of exclusivity rather than origin, Katamari is still a terrible example. Namco had no plans to even release it in America because of how Japanese it is, and only ever did because the IGDA brought it to GDC, causing it to get tons of western media attention and pressure on Namco for an international release.

The ps1/ps2 is an era so unique. Even nowadays with an these indie games you can't get a game like this. This can only exist when big companies are willing to throw money at unproven ideas for the sake of building a legacy. No concerns with immediate profit would allow for something like that.

It shouldn't all be done by just 3 or 4 AAA studios now. There used to be so many AA studios around with decent capital that were willing to put big amounts into these types of experimental titles, some of them even growing into beloved series. But the biggest publishers ate up those studios with acquisitions and then dropped them completely when they didn't meet their unrealistic sales expectations or shafted them to putting out average crap that can make quick profits.

I once went on a research binge investigating all things PS2, so I was aware of this game even before it appeared on Vinesauce. I couldn't wrap my head around it back then, and I still can barely do so now - HOW did this game happen? WHO MADE THIS? It was clearly made in Japan, had all the leanings of a Japanese absurdist comedy in a cutsey super-deformed style, something along the lines Super Milk-Chan, and yet the ENTIRE game is in English with only subtitles for Japanese speakers. On top of that, the script itself is perfectly adequate when it comes to the fluency of the English, which tells me that at least one of the people in charge of directing this entire thing HAD to be a native English speaker living in Japan. I would so love for somebody who was at the heart of this game's conception to come forward and explain just what the HELL was going on at the studio at the time, it would be such a fascinating topic.
@Diwasho
@Diwasho Жыл бұрын
I don't really get the impression that Alvion had a native speaking writer on their team, the dialogues may seem clean and grammatically sound but they still feel like something a Japanese mind would wright, it's bordering on Engrish without actually being Engrish. To be fair, plenty of Japanese people know fluent English, it's easy to forget but some of the biggest game series with fully English scripts like Resident Evil and MGS were written entirely by Japanese developers.

Since the game asks you your age, maybe it's to not show swearing in the dialogue if the player is too young or something. I know that Japanese as a language works very differently that English, so the swearing could be just Japanese writers not being fully aware of the vulgarity of these words, but maybe they were legit unsure whether to make this a kids game or a parody of some sorts and they just went "fuck it" and did both things at once. Would potentially explain how unfocused the plot it as well.

It sucks that Sony is pandering entirely to the West now. Back in the PS1 and PS2 days, it was a crapshoot for whether you'd find a diamond in the rough or something god awful, but nowadays it's just derivative and boring. Sony banking entirely on realism is gonna bite them in the ass.
