A personal PS3 anecdote: I used to work at Circuit City when the PS3 came out. There was a display with PS3s at the front of our store. A man came in, grabbed one and ran out the door. We didn't do anything we just stood there and watched him book it across the parking lot. When he reached the street, he suddenly stopped, dropped the box and went embarrassingly on his way. The box was for display purposes and didn't actually have a PS3 in it. We all had a good laugh afterwards.

The issue for Skyward Sword wasn't that they didn't have the motion controls yet. It was that they didn't anticipate the wireless interference from all of the audience members with their cell phones on.

@@ZeranZeran I don't actually know the exact answer, but the Wii Remote connects to the Wii via a bluetooth signal. the IR is used for things like pointing at the screen, which is a feature used by Skyward Sword, but the Wiimote communicates to the Wii what it sees using bluetooth. bluetooth uses radio waves, so I'd guess the phones were messing with that

One notable event was when Disney decided to broadcast E3 2018 live on their channel “Disney XD”. (This was when the channel was trying to appeal to young teenage “gamers”) They got about halfway through the presentation with no issues until Gears of War Tactics was revealed, and they cut the broadcast out right after the trailer showed an enemy’s head exploding from a sniper shot. After that the presentation kept cutting back in for a few seconds before back out for several minutes because Disney was too scared to show anything else on the show for more than a few seconds. It was a total disaster and the nail in the coffin for their whole “gamer appeal” phase

I think something largely forgotten is that E3 was an expo made primarily for retailers. Its only later it started morphing into a massive marketing event for consumers. So thats why so much is spent talking about sales and stuff in those earlier ones. Edit: retailers not investors/stockholders.
@rickpgriffin Жыл бұрын
And the reason it morphed was because fans were *starved* for news and to see how the sausage was made, so early on they just kept showing up in droves through press passes. Later on conventions like PAX took over this space with a more deliberately fan-centric offering, so E3 was already starting to be obsoleted
@JohnWilliams-wl9px11 ай бұрын
You just reminded me when Kingdom Hearts fans were disappointed that no news of critical mode or other DLC was revealed at GDC 2019. Despite the fact the event exist just for developers to talk anout the technical aspect of their job.

That's why Sega's presentation at E3 1995 was so damaging. The surprise release of the Sega Saturn soured retailers on the company and they never recovered.
@lbsc120110 ай бұрын
No, E3 was never for investors. Trade shows were originally for *retailers* to learn about upcoming games and make decisions about what to purchase. But the press was always there and catered to from the start, as well. It was always a marketing event to some extent.
@stoopidapples159610 ай бұрын

CRITICAL CONTEXT: Wii Music was first shown during E3 2006. It was not shown AT ALL during E3 2007. There were MULTIPLE interviews with Nintendo employees that year from the MAINSTREAM HARDCORE gaming press asking where Wii Music was and if it was cancelled. Nintendo severely misinterpreted that to think there was intense interest in Wii Music, leading them to make it their headline game at E3 that year. It was still a massive mistake, but this is an important piece of the story i NEVER see included.

After he got his diagnosis he tweeted; "Will take wun million pills by the end of this nightmare." It takes a lot of guts to go onstage and speak a foreign language. It takes even more guts to join in on the jokes people make about your pronunciation. It's fear of moments like this that make Miyamoto and Kojima rely on translators despite being rich enough to afford good English teachers. He is clearly fluent in English, something most Japanese people cannot claim. We tend to think English is easy because of how widely it is spoken but English requires a whole different set of facial muscles to speak than Japanese. Most people making fun of him cannot speak a second language anyway, I'd like to see them say 100万の軍勢! on stage at Toyko game show. It was the lack of crowd response that threw him off. In comparison the PS4 and PS5 are a joke - not even the PS4 Pro can play 4K Blu-rays yet the Xbox One X can, hilarious considering Sony developed the format, and the PS5 can do it but the supplied media remote control is garbage and all of the features like that feel more like an afterthought. The PS3 was also the last PlayStation to support CD playback - PS4 and PS5 don't have the laser for it.
@garydiamondguitarist9 ай бұрын
@@kingoftherevolution4855 Yeah, despite some problems the PS3 is one of the most ambitious consoles ever, if not *THE* most ambitious as Ken Kutaragi wanted an all-in-one that could do photo viewing and printing, video playback, video calls, CD/DVD/Blu-ray support, full backwards compatibility with the previous home consoles etc. Launch PS3s do PS1/PS2 games with basically 99% compatibility, and a lot of people don't know this but there's an unfinished PSP emulator built into it as well, which can be used although a lot of games don't work properly. Compared to this, the PS4 and PS5 are far less ambitious. I'd actually vote the PS4 as the weakest PlayStation ever - yeah a lot of the games were amazing and still are, but it's noisy, boring to look at (all models), had a stripped down OS as compared to the PS3 which loses a lot of the cool media centre stuff. Now the PS5 can do all the things a PS4 Pro did and more (including fixing the frame-rates on certain games, or better still doubling 30FPS games to 60FPS in a few cases), plus more quietly and quickly due to the SSD, PS4s are basically completely pointless.

A little disappointed that E3 is no longer a thing nowadays. While it may had its issues, it was always a big event to look forward to for the next big gaming news to be revealed. Nintendo Directs and State-of-Plays are neat and all, but they'll never reach the impact the annual E3 used to have.

To me the final nail in the coffin was 2020 when E3 had to be cancelled due to covid and both Sony and Microsoft showed off their new consoles inn their own livestreams. Nintendo pulling out was the beginning of the end because they'd embarrassed themselves a few too many times in the Wii era figured a pre-recorded video was the best option. Then Sony pulled out because they realized they'd have to show the same games 4 years in a row and that just would not fly. Microsoft just wanted an excuse to park a car on stage so they didn't care about E3 one way or the other.

I think the only the only way an E3 type event would work now is if it gave smaller, lesser known gaming companies and developers the chance to show the world their work and advertise upcoming games. Since the big three (Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony) now have their own Directs, the stage is set to give the spotlight to the little guy. The event would have to be scaled down, of course. And it couldn't be called "E3". But there is now an opportunity to fill the hole E3 left.

Not only was Microsoft’s Kinect-focused E3 presentation painful to watch but they faked the “gameplay demos” because they had oversold the motion tracking capabilities and couldn’t get the hardware to work as advertised. @Xfushion2 Жыл бұрын
You're on the minority there, Star fox zero always had bad rep. On the reveal people were disappointed because it was another SF64 remake and the folk who played it couldn't stand it's control scheme, that was basically the main complaint of the game which led to mediocre ratings from critics. It did so bad both critically and commercially Nintendo didn't even ported it to switch unlike the rest of their WiiU exclusives.

The cope at the time was that Star Fox Zero's terrible controls were actually great if you develop Stockholm Syndrome by playing the game from start to finish about 5 times.
